Exactly what is required in the way of licensing to sell produce and plants? I know it probably varies from state to state, but give me some general guidelines.
Following the advice given here, I'm starting out small (microscopic, in fact) - trying to sell some tomato and herb plants next spring. My plan is to target a couple Saturdays in late April, put a temporary sign out at the end of our road (we live off a fairly busy state highway) and sell the plants on that day only. I know there are zoning issues with running a business in a residential neighborhood, but I equate a couple Saturdays of selling plants to the equivalent of a garage sale, which is exempt from zoning ordinances.
If my neighbors balk at that idea, I may be able to set up a stand at a nearby arts and crafts shop. But either way, we're not talking about a full-time business. Do I need a business license for just a few weekends of work? Are there tax advantages to having the business license that outweighs the hassles?
I also plan to try a booth at our FM this summer. I know they'll have a fee for the booth, but what do I generally need to know before I approach them about a booth - are there typically any permits or anything that you need to have? To be honest, I'd like to keep things as simple and unregulated as possible. I know I could probably run around collecting licenses, permits and certificates out the wazoo, but from a practical perspective, what is required, and what is overkill?
