We saw this driving around town and wondered if it would work in our wild front yard.

Iy looks rather like adock, a Rumex species. Perhaps the Broad-leafed Dock - Rumex obtusifolius: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/32113/

Really? I'm surprised. I think it was used in a garden designed by Wolfgang Oehme, and I can't find any Rumex's associated with his work other than the relatively short Bloody Dock, or any big Rumex's used ornamentally. Am I missing something.

Aha! I didn't know what that looked like in the "flesh"! Oehme was a big proponent of Inula racemosa 'Sonnenspeer' , so I bet that is what it is! Thank you so much! Here's a photo posted by growin from UBC: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/318780/.
