I have these little black bugs and pill bugs (the ones that curl up into a ball) eating my strawberries too. At least it gives the chickens something to enjoy - strawberries with a little extra protein thrown in.

Thanks for the article. You really do a nice job with the photos as well as the text. And it looks like you're having good success with those berries too!

Adina,
I have used beer to trap slugs but with limited success. In saucers. I think the cup makes more sense than a saucer and at least it makes it harder for the rotten slugs to get away.
When I find them, I scrape them up and give 'em to my chickens along with the snails.
Beautifully photographed and well written article. Informative and kind of fun to read about your experiences.
Even though I can't eat the strawberries, my DH and kids love 'em. They get downright sneaky about going out to check if any are ripe, they do and I find that funny. : 0 )
Keep 'em coming!

Thanks, Jules! I'm sorry you can't eat the strawberries, they're so delicious! So funny your boys, I can almost see them sneaking for the strawberries!

Adina I've heard of the beer traps, but I've never had a problem like that with slugs on my strawberries. But our strawberry season is during the drier months of Feb. through April here in Florida. My biggest problem with keeping strawberries growing is the squirrels love them. I tried some in hanging baskets this year, they did okay but not as well as the ground strawberries. Might try hanging them, then the slugs won't get too them. Just a thought.
Great article and your pictures are wonderful.

Sherri, thanks for advice. We have a climbing species here , but I've never tried it. This year we had drought in May and the slugs weren't as many as last year...no need for beer! LOL

Your welcome Adina. I know it can be frustrating growing fruits and vegetables in a wet climate. I sometimes want to give it up, but each year I try again. :)
