This year I paid no attention to my rhubarb, no manure, no extra water...now it looks black with only 3 skinny stalks left.
I only had about 4 good stalks this year. I was going to transplant it...should I? Do you think it's dead???. Zone 5, Chittenango,NY

I'm not sure what the black is. See how it looks when the weather starts to cool down. rhubarb really slows down to very little growth in hot weather. The bed I baby sit is too crowed at one end and isn't producing like it should. I thought the whole season was off for rhubarb.

I wanted add an after thought. The only damage I get is holes in the leaves from slugs and snails, but the leaves grow faster than they eat or else it's toxic to them and they quit. The thought I had: is it possible that it's been damaged from herbicide drift? From someone spraying their lawn or road side spraying. Although the last I haven't seen any evidence that the towns, counties or state have been out around here.

They certainly don't need any particular care... no extra water or manure... so its condition certainly is mysterious.

That's why I'm thinking herbicide. The only black leaves I've seen on a rhubarb is from frost damage.
