Please help to give me a botanical name for this plant called Love Apple, which I've had for years. Ornamental plant bears red-orange "apples" which dry and stay hard all winter. Lovely for arrangements. Apples are 3/4 to 1 inch with hard exterior. Plant has spiny stems and sharp thorns under mature leaves. Grows in branched form, not bushy, to 3 feet tall. Annual
Description sounds like an eggplant. there are several orange varieties. Burkina Faso, Cannibal Tomato, Scarlet Chinese, Pumpkin on a Stick, Turkish Orange etc Most are Solanum aethiopicum, Pumpkin on a Stick is listed as Solanum integrifolium. Garden eggplant is Solanum melongena var. esculentum
Thank you victorengel and Farmerdill. My plant is indeed Solanum aculeatissimum. Looks just like it. Finally. I've tried for years to find out what it was. Almost no one has them. I just didn't try the right place before.
