Definitely a cockroach; probably german as Flap has said. Don't be scared! These ones don't spread disease, and don't necessarily reflect on your home's cleanliness. I have had good success with boric acid (such as Roach-Pruf) poufed around with a insect duster. Laundry borax or Boraxo soap are a different boron compound and don't work nearly as well, if at all.
