I think this tree is some kind of chestnut. Based on the leaf it looks like an American Chestnut but the tree appears to be much older than what should be allowed because of the blight and the bark looks different from other pictures I've seen. We are located in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia.
Discrepency I have on that is the leaf size. They definitely bigger than that for the most part. Are there any species of beech that would have bigger leaves or is the leaf size not that critical to the ID? The bark and what I just read about beech nuts seem to match what are on the tree though.
