This plant started to randomly grow in a neighbors pot. They didn't plant it, so most likely a bird dropped the seed. We've taken it to the local garden company, posted on Facebook, done the online plant ID things, but to no avail. We're located in Southern California. Any suggestions are helpful!

Maybe Brachychiton, maybe this one: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/175036/

Hm. Similar but not exact. The origination of the veins is pretty different. The base of the leaf where the veins start is curved in my pic and in the brachychitus it is pointed. The red trunk is throwing me a bit, too.

Look through the rest of the Brachychitons. I have a feeling...

I've looked at a slew of Brachychitons. The closest is the one seems to be the populneum but it's still not exact. While looking, I actually found another person on another site with the same plant who was told it's not Brachychiton. Any other ideas?

You never know, it could be a mutant or a hybrid. It is common for plants to mutate or cross-breed with others in the same genus. Just a guess.

    Happy Gardening!
