how to tell? Both are common in coastal S. Carolina, where I took this shot this morning.

Resin Northumberland United Kingdom (Zone 9a) Subadult (1 year old) Yellow-crowned; note the white fringes on the mantle feathers, Black-crowned has uniform brownish-grey at this age. The black throat (white in B-c) is also starting to show.
DebinSC Summerville, SC (Zone 8a) Thank you, Resin. My field guide was vague about the difference in the markings. I'm making note of yours for future reference.
