Gardeners born under the sign of the tomato are determined and well-accessorized. You like exuberant, late-summer flowers like sunflowers, dahlias and chrysanthemums, and you know just how to stage them in your garden with the right column, urn or sundial.

Trees that reflect your sun-drenched Mediterranean personality include bay, olive, laurel and citrus. Good news for those of you who are stuck in cold winter climates: you can try your hand at growing small versions indoors.

Famous gardeners and botanists born this month include Sir Joseph Paxton, John Tradescant the Younger, Victor V. Jacquemont, John Torrey, Jane Webb Loudon, Willis Lenn Jepson, Tasha Tudor and Jerome Irving (aka J.I.) Rodale.

Thanks, Terry! I will have to look up some of those famous people. I only know Tradescant, Loudon, Tudor and Rodale.

You are always giving us some 'food for thought".
