Hi, all.
Susie, thanks for the new thread.
Yes, I know it takes a long time before the amaryllis belladonna will bloom. Mostly growing the seeds for the fun of it :) Curious to see what I get!
I have a pack of chamomile seeds. Never got them planted though. If you're interested in trying them, and don't mind if I take a few to try next season, I'd be happy to share them :)

I have (fresh 2012 seed):
Baptisia (purple) False Indigo
mixed zinnia
popsicle asiatic lily
four o'clocks (white & a few yellow mixed in)
'lime twist' clematis
'president' clematis
flag iris (not sure if yellow or purple)

I will update as I find more (I forget everything I have already harvested) and also seed from last year that I never got planted.

I have one GIANT seed pod from my "Gamecock" Iris http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/33052/#b...I cant wait to pop it open and take a look. Its not ready yet though. I rec'd it in a trade last year. This year I got one bloom and it gave me seed. I am very pleased.
Had to repot all my house plants and get them in yesterday. Temperature is fixin to drop into the 30's tonight :/ Im SO not ready for this weather! Lots of tomatoes to harvest before they freeze - maybe I can get away with covering them...I hope so. Making sure the trees all have enough water, gardens too. Watching the bluebirds flit around outside my office window right now :)

I'm on the list, #25, but spelled wrong. I'm PFG, not PGF. Just in case anyone needs to look me up...

Also, my daughter is now on DG, SNARVA, and wants to join. Her computer isn't working right now so I'm signing up for her, but that will be taken care of soon. Her garden is in New Jersey, I think Zone 5.

She has only been there a short time, and lived in the city before that, so doesn't have any seeds to put in. I will have more than enough, and will put in enough to cover for her.

Only 5 more days until I get to my garden... I've heard that there were lots of tomatoes from a friend who harvested them while I was away. He also said there were lots of flowers, and everything looked good. Between the irrigation system I put in just before I left, a reasonable amount of rain, and the helper who was supposed to work 3 hours a week, I'm fairly sure there are no big disasters. But there are so many special plants I've been nurturing- baby clematis, liner hostas, other new plants, seedlings and divisions- there is no way to find out how they are all doing until I get there. And seeds-- who knows what I'll find!

One thing I'm sure of is globe thistle. Does anyone want some? If so, I'll clean extra, otherwise I'll just do a small amount. Last year I did a ton, it took forever, then I didn't know what to do with it all!

Pam - I had globe thistle last year (and still have some I can share) what a pain to clean those! I got really good with the back of a spoon so I wouldnt get pricked! Took a while for me to figure out a way I could do it without touching them at all.

HOW on earth do I get the seed from my beebalm? Recommendations?

Hi, all.
Been thinking about what seeds I'd like to get if still available. Still haven't figured out where everything will be planted, but here's my list at this point:
deejay9: CARNATION "DBL YELLOW -GRENADIN GOLDEN SUN"? Would this do well in zone 9b? How far apart do the plants need to be spaced, and how tall do they get?
Cris316: Alyssum "Royal Carpet" (especially if it really only grows to 3 inches tall) and some of the Siberian Wallflower.
Midwestfarmwife: Dwarf French Marigold, Dwarf Sungold Sunflower (just a few as I'll only have room for a couple plants, but thought it'd be fun to try), and some Dwarf Sweet Peas (if they are fragrant).
And diamond9192002 may also have some seeds for me as we discussed by dmail.
*** Seeds I could contribute:
Besides the Cerinthe "Pride of Gibraltar" collected from my plants this spring that I'm definitely including, I have several packets of seeds (packed for 2011) that I could include. I'd like to try a few of each of these, but I won't be able to plant them all, so if someone is interested in any of these, please let me know what you'd like so I make sure I send the rest of the packet along when the box comes to me.
Basil, Italian Cameo, Large-Leaf Container.
Chamomile, Bodegold (says it makes a pineapple scented tea).
Heliotrope "Deep Marine".
Nigella, Persian Violet (but I need to double check to see how much is left).
Phlox, Dutch Tapestry.
Rose, Miniature, Angel Wings.
Salvia, Marble Arch.
Stock, Ten-Week Bouquet (will need to see how much of this one is left, too).
Sunflowers, Musicbox (maybe just a few seeds left).
Creeping Thyme.

Hi, all.
Susie, thanks for checking for the seeds. Thanks for offering to share a plant since you can't find the seeds :) Can you give me an idea of how tall it gets and how much space it will want once established so I can plan to have an appropriate space for it? Oh, and I should have double checked before, but this carnation is fragrant, right?
Regarding my list of seeds above, I will likely not put them all in the box. For each kind of seeds I receive, I will put one of these in, and perhaps a couple of others. So if there is something someone is particularly interested in, please be sure to let me know so I'm sure I include it. Otherwise, I'll just pick some. In case you want to see what any of these will look like, I got them all from Renee's Garden.

Well I finally got to the garden last Friday and worked like a demon until Tuesday afternoon when we left. I'm just rested up now, and we go back tomorrow for another busy weekend.

Most everything looked good except for a few plants in pots. The guy that watered while I was gone did a fair job, but missed the things that were scattered around away from the main patio. Also, the batteries were low in the irrigation system I put in before we went, which was surprising. I would have expected them to last longer. Anyway, some things were dry, and the few perennials I left in pots near sprayheads in the garden were dry or dead. I fixed that and watered extra to make up, and whatever wasn't dead perked up.

The sad thing was that when I left the garden was full of summer color, and the later group was just starting- particularly phlox and the tomatoes. Now they are finished, it's really fall.

I did start seed collecting. So far I have Veronica Sunny Border Blue, White Knautia, Nicotiana Alata Fragrant Angel and N Langsdorfii, Echinacea Rubinstern, E White Swan, and E Green Envy (bi-color). There are lots more Veronica's in the garden- Red Fox, Icicle, Evelyn to name some, and Salvias- Snow Hill, Blue Hill, May Night, Caradonna. Except for Nicotiana, the annuals haven't yet set enough seed to collect, but I will have some Zinnias, Cosmos, Sweet Alyssum (white), various nasturtiums and marigolds if anyone's interested.

Does anyone have experience with Knautia? These were (3) plants, supposed to be Mars Midget but bloomed white last year. I moved them in the fall to the middle of a sunny border and they got soooo TALL I couldn't believe it, at least 5-6 feet! I'll try to post a picture a little later. I harvested seeds, then cut them back to the basal rosette, just so I could maneuver around them. They can't stay where they are, but I don't know where else to put them. I guess they transplant ok since I did it last year and it certainly didnt hurt them. If anyone wants to take a chance on how they might ship, I'll be happy to share. Just lmk...

Deejay, my daughter should be checking in soon. She can't get on personal websites from work, and her home computer won't go on line. I'm giving her an old one of mine that still works well, but she won't get it until next week.

Susie, carnation seeds can get away from you if you wait too long. You can put an organza bag or something else that is not air tight over the seed head to try to save them as the flower heads dry. Even if you don't, you should get a few seeds. Wait until the seed pod is dry and brown. It is an elongated tube with an opening at the top. All you have to do collect those and turn them upside down over a white piece of paper or a plate and squeeze the sides of the tube gently. The seeds will fall right out. The seeds are black and kind of angular in appearance.
Have a nice weekend everyone.

Ya'll area talking seeds, Im baking :) Yesterday two pumpkin pies from scratch. Today a batch of no bake cookies and the caramel apple cheesecake is in the oven :) Tomorrow, its chicken wild rice soup, possibly tomato soup if I can find a food mill and who knows what else. I've collected all the seeds that are roaming around my yard already. drying what needs it. There are still some clem seeds I can collect, but there are also still flowers blooming!
Son won his football game today. He got a touchdown! Daughters soccer game tied at 3. Helped the inlaws tear our some juniper and spirea. They are adding a bigger drive in concrete this week. I got about 30 or so mini-hosta from her that came out as well. (Oh crap, I left them in the trunk of my car)
Very busy day today - and Im sure just as busy tomorrow without the sporting events. Need to water the yard tomorrow. Another day in the 80's forecasted. It was absolutely beautiful today!!

Chilly and damp, same as the last two days. I cleaned the seed that dried from last week and collected a bunch more that needs to dry. Today I need to move some plants around. The weather is good for that, even if it isn't so enjoyable to be out there.

Alikat, I just looked at your list again... In addition to the white Scabiosa, could you also save some white catananche for me? I'll have a more complete list soon, maybe there's something you will want from me.

Susie ~ Could we have a separate thread for "haves" and "wants"?? Then we just post one time and edit it when it needs changing, so people can find the posts more quickly. (Just an idea...) Thanks!

Alikat ~ I would like to try your white cupid's dart.

The deer have eaten some blooms from flowers that I was hoping to save the seeds. I sprayed again, but they are very hungry. They ate my delphinium, which I thought was poisonous, the monarda, the pineapple sage, and the tree peonies. Just nibbled those, but they look unsightly now as they were SO pretty. Also the apricot cosmos bipinnatus, of which is exceedingly scarce. The 'Yellow Garden' is still standing for now, and looks like it is beginning to bloom, as they are very late bloomers. I had to buy them as plants, but I was hoping to bring them to seed. I should have put them inside my fenced garden area. I was going to also share my seeds of Heliopsis 'Summer Sun', but those flowers are now gone as well. I don't know if any more will take their place this season.

I have collected some seeds of other plants and will share my list with you as soon as I have them sifted, as they are just seed-heads for now. I can say for sure that I will have hardy hibiscus, Spanish lavender and English lavender and some various yarrow. More to follow...

I may end up with enough mixed Cosmos 'Bright Lights' and 'Klondike' to plant the back 40! There's already a quart size Ziploc bag full of clean seeds and I started gathering in another one last week.

Well over half the Zinnias are still going strong and must have collected 50 or more heads already in a large brown paper grocery bag. Question about them. On the bottom where the petals form, are those seeds too? I shucked a few of the heads and had forgotten how much their remains look like those of Coneflowers.

Surprisingly, nobody I know of has asked for Daylily seeds. Mine are mixed, cooling in the fridge just waiting for new homes.

Gotcha down, Pam. You'll really enjoy these bright, care-free fillers. I planted the seeds in a trench of clay soil, covered them lightly with good potting soil, watered at planting time, and let Mother Nature do the rest.

Alana, the Tithonia rotundifolia plants have grown to an astonishing height approaching 10' and they're finally getting heavy with buds. One is especially strange looking and may be a morph. I'll take pics and post them tomorrow.

It's past my bedtime, folks, so I'll see you all tomorrow.

Susie - the cheesecakes didnt turn out the way I wanted them to. I did individual ones. They look horrible but OMGOsh do they taste nummy!! I did Caramel apples cheesecake and made Chicken wild rice soup (stew) yesterday. Also made no bake cookies, did all the laundry, washed the cat boxes and laundry room floor, cleaned the garage and moved all the garage sale stuff to the shed. Might actually be able to park 2 cars in the garage right now - I dont know if we have done that since we've moved back home 3 years ago! Just gotta get the John Deere running and we are set for winter I think. Leaves are dropping everywhere. The next few weeks will be spent raking and watering.
I am still searching for any more seeds that pop up. Right now all I have left on the stem is Joe-pye. I havent been in the front to look too hard yet. There is probably some hosta there too.

They haven't been fed a thing are growing in the poorest soil we have. Go figure? One bloom has started to open in the very tip top, looks orange from a distance but that could be a play of light, or lack of since today was overcast and rainy. The plant with the first bloom is 10' tall, I measured...lol Amazing looking plants, especially considering the seeds weren't planted until June!

Will do, Susan and Chris. The red and yellow Columbine (#1) is one from the Winky Series, short and sweet.

I have been collecting more seeds. There will be some surprises for y'all. Actually I was surprised as I had collected quite a few already, but I have just started to clean them. That is the hard part. I have not done much of this before. I am trying to keep out all chaff and stems, but I am not 100% successful.

I will give you the list once they are ready. I will post it here and on the other page. Thanks for your patience. A lot has been going on here.

Everyone -- I'm so excited about all the seeds...I can't wait for spring now and winter hasn't even begun!

DJ -- since I will have seeds for lots of people and the box may get to me after the box gets to them...do I just mail out those packets to them separately? Sorry for yet another question but I've never been a part of the seed swap thing!

I got a couple of screens like colanders. I think that the smaller one is supposed to be for a sink strainer. Still, I have spent the last 3 hours working on those seeds and even with the straining, some things go through the strainer that are not seeds. Sometimes so small I need a microscope! I am really trying to do them right. What is the secret of buddleia? I can hardly tell which are seeds.

The hardy hibiscus do just fine; I got a lot of those collected. Oh, the lavender. I think some of the heads are not yet dry enough. I will have to wait to finish them later.

Thanks for that tip, juhur7. My only Butterfly Bush has white blooms and this is a current pic.

I am fairly new collecting seeds from my gardens, since they're only three years old. Big seeds like those from Daylilies and Cannas are easy. Blackberry Lily seeds are easy too, but have a few plants going on two years old with healthy leaves that haven't bloomed. Wonder why?

I'm patiently waiting for several pods of a Species Lily to dry on the Mother plant that gets about 4' tall. The blooms in mid-July were stunning, going from darkest pink near the throat to light pink and ending with white tips on her recurved petals.

Well, I guess I screwed up the whole batch as I mashed all the stuff and then finally put it in the tea strainer. I will try and collect some more and try again. I have cut it back several times and it is blooming again. I will wait for them to dry thoroughly...

Minnesippi, there should be Catalpa seeds on the trees, BUT I also have trees popping up in my flowerbeds. I promised warriorwisdomkathy a tree trade, so maybe we can work one out too if I can get all these sale plants from Lowe's in the ground. Can't resist, and the manager is willing to dicker with me! And - I couldn't resist buying 40 young peonies from a hybridizer who's been at it for at least 40 yrs. They are seed grown herbaceous and will be a surprise when they bloom. If that's not bad enough, I ordered more Rockii, Chinese, and Herbaceous peonies from China! Yes - I know I've been BAD! I ordered extras to sell, so hope I'm not in the doghouse too much with hubby! My Japanese Maple seed experiment finally worked this year, and there must be 150 or more little trees in pots to stick in the ground.
They'll go in a temporary spot until I can figure out a permanent place next year. AND, I discovered little trees all around our big Pink Flowering Crabapple, and White Flowering Crabapple trees. I guess after 30 yrs. of planting, this yard is becoming a jungle. The wild Black Raspberries have completely taken over the grape arbor. I had my husband dig most of them out last yr. with our backhoe, and it only made them grow more! I've given tons away to neighbors. They are super hard to dig by hand.

I've been on a 10 day road trip, thought I'd let you guys know I'm still in.
I'm on cloud 9 tonight, my 4 year old grand-daughter was weeding for me without any prompting, I never taught her to weed! She's obviously been watching. I'm doing some hand watering and this little voice says "beema, where should I put these weeds?" and I look over and she is holding up two fistfuls of weeds. So I gave her a bucket. Then the next thing I know she has gotten out some 4" pots, filled them with potting soil, and has planted some little aeoniums she found on the ground under the bushes where she was weeding, "beema, where should I put my plants?". Then when I told my daughter she said that there were little piles of seeds all over the yard. This kid is a natural, all the more reason to start my own little nursery!

Deejay, thanks for the pots offer. A trip to Michigan would be fun but seems we don't get far from here, especially during harvest - early this yr. due to drought. I know there is a wool spinnery in Frankenmuth that I've been hearing about for yrs.

I am wondering where to plant the trees since the yard is already FULL, and I'm getting complaints from my men about trimming. Guess I'll have to expand into the sheep pasture and build little fences around the trees - LOL!

JoAnn, hold onto your seeds until you receive the Robin. The flight plan is yet to be determined. When it's posted, if you've promised seeds to folks ahead of you, just mail them directly.

"Beema", your grand-daughter sounds absolutely precious :)

Good luck with all those trees and Peonies, MWFW. What we don't have enough of are trees. Years ago, I tried talking hubs into turning our field into a Christmas Tree Farm. It would have worked had his job not taken him out of town for weeks and months at a time. Still might now that he's retired.

Yes ...Susan have cosmos for you..tho they are a bit more on the pink side than purple but still gorgeous all the same.

And susie if I can get some more by the first of the week I'll ship off asap. Now am I still understanding, we can ship a larger bag so they can dip from them as each would like? Will make things easier than labeling a gazillion little bags...lol..I also plan on donating a package of mini baggies. (Just a tidbit, I'm in Co not Mo, does that make any difference, lol? Why don't you put SNARVA after me? She works in the city and I can just hand it to her. Or make her the last one in NJ and she can bring it to work and give it to me. She lives about 1 1/2 hours west of NY. Does that help at all?

That looks fine to me. I was going to be before marti so that I could include some things for her, but I will mail them to her separately in a few days anyway. That way if I want to put in a plant or two I know it will make it before it a freeze.
Finally, I am getting some seeds collected.

Hi, all.
Sorry for not posting for so long... got busy with things, then was away for the weekend.
Fruity and jlee160, I've made note of your requests :) I think I can divide the Heliotrope three ways, one portion for each of us; Renee's Garden says there's about 200 seeds per packet, so we should each still get a good number for planting :)
Fruity, looks like the box gets to you before me. Are you going to have the box come to you a second time, or should I send seeds to you separately?
Looks like the others of you who have requested seeds from me so far are later in the flight path, so be sure to look for an envelope from me to you :)

For those interested my package will be heading sisies way in the morning. A list of seeds going will be placed on the other thread tonight so ya may wanna see what's available...

Specific packs for: Diamond919, Fruity, and frausnow... and some for susie also...

Some are divided into small bags, tho not many. Small bags are included for those who haven't gotten any yet, to get a pinch. Hope ya all find some goodies coming your way.

This Rudbeckia is included, both pix are of the same plant, just showing coloring as the flower matures

Oh boy, I'm right near the beginning! And I have a load of goodies going in. Today I collected and cleaned seeds from my Potentillas, both Monarch Velvet and Miss Willmott. So Susie, or anyone else, if you need some just let me know and I'll put some in your package. MV is finished, but Miss W is still blooming her head off.

My salvias are still blooming, too. It's confusing because the blossom stalks are really, really long with just a few little florets at the ends. Would there be seeds near the bottom, where the pods are more developed? Or do I have to wait until the whole stalk turns brown?

Interesting that they are still going because I wasn't around to deadhead. Obviously they don't need it except for neatness. Live and learn...

Michelle, seriously, a small pinch of the Heliotrope seeds is sufficient. Will probably have the Robin during the second round since many seeds I want to include are still drying on the plants.

Alana, here's one of the Tithonia blooms. They are Orange on top, Yellow underneath.

It's another chilly rainy day and we had our first fire last night, feels so nice and cozy. Off to make a chicken pot pie for supper.

Susie,

So sorry about your pet turkey. Domestic fowl really do have personalities. Even though our free range chickens drive me crazy when they get in the flower beds, and we have to fence in the garden so they don't eat all the tomatoes - I still enjoy watching them, and the eggs are the best! I had an Ameraucana hen (laid blue eggs) that I named Petunia. She used to keep me company when I worked in the flowerbeds, just waiting for a worm or grub and came to the back door for treats. We have a Barred Cochin hen that's at least 11 or 12 yrs. old that I call "Grandma." She pecks all the other hens who try to get near her food.

Sometimes memories of the simple things in life are the most rewarding.

Hi, all.
Fruity, thinking about it, I'll probably just take a small pinchof the Heliotrope, too. And, for now, I'll plan to include your seeds in an envelope in the box for you to get the second go-around. But let me know if you decide that you'd rather have them mailed separate. Will put a pinch of each of the others you've requested in the envelope, too :)
I'll also set aside a pinch of the Heliotrope for jlee160. And I'll include the rest in a bag along with the seed pack so people can see what the flowers look like and can get the directions for how to grow them :) Will also do this with the Phlox Dutch Tapestry and the Salvia "Marble Arch".
Susie, my thoughts and prayers are with you, too.

Susie so sorry to hear about your Turkey. So hard when you do all you can.
I had a little Cochin Banty rooster when we lived on our farm in CT. He was so cute and sweet. He was the only one I would let live in the garden and by the house . He had a little dog house to live in.
I heard a thump on the side of the house, I ran outside just as a hawk killed him. I was devastated , I kept thinking if I would have made him live at the barn he would still been alive =(

I'll add these trades to my list:

Sbish 2- echinacea(rubinstern, white swan, green envy), cosmos(psyche white)

Mellen1954- Veronica/Evelyn seeds

I may have a problem with the Cosmos... I've been harvesting as many seeds as I can find, but don't yet have cosmos. I keep forgetting to look for the plants when I'm there, and have the terrible suspicion that they may have disappeared while I was gone. Everything else I have.

This morning I got Joe Pye Weed seeds. I'm still waiting for the Platycodon pods to ripen. I have Hakone White and Hakone Blue, both double flowers. The blue I did from seed this spring and got tons of plants. Only a few of them flowered, but that's enough to collect seeds from.

Susie, I'm glad the girls will get another chance to find love!

I'll be putting in Canna patens, my favorite canna. It has a SMALL red and yellow flower and seems to recover faster from cold weather damage. But since there is an interest in Canna seeds I'll keep an eye on the ones who are blooming and collect some seeds. Anyone wanting Canna patens that is on the list before me just holler and I can send you some . . . I had lots of flowers this year.
Still trying to be brave and collect some of those "Bear's Breaches" seeds. They sure are taking their sweet time to mature and are they pokey!

the only canna that I have seeds for is the one in the photo...it was given to me a couple of years ago so I don't know it's name.
Guessing that the Florence Vaughn cannas don't have seeds? I have never found seeds on them.

Evelyn, I'm sorry you had to drop out. I hope everything is ok? If there's anything you would like from my list, dmail me and I'll send it to you.

Alikat, I see I'm right after you, so I get first crack at your stash. In addition to what I already asked for, I have my eye on the giant white masterwort. Google says it gets 20-30" tall. Is that your experience? I have to replace that geenormous knautia, don't need another giant! Also, does it need any special treatment to germinate?

I don't remember who asked for Joe Pye Weed, I harvested a bunch the other day. whoever you are, just let me know and I'll out some aside for you.

I want some of pfg's platycodon seeds, both white and blue...please...

Also noticed today that my Eupatorium joicus,( it's 'spose to get about 48" and has varigated leaves, with white flowers), is ready for harvest. I will collect what I can, tho we've already had a hard freeze and not sure any more will mature, but do have some...It will get put in the box for those after me or the second round...I'll also see what else i can find...Kathy...

Tried to find a pix of the eupatorium but can't find, oops...

Evening everyone.

Hi ya, Corey. I'm already missing those nifty screens you added last year, among a host of seeds you shared. Many of the Zinnias I'm growing now came from seeds you shared.

Requests are caught up on the other thread. I think yours was the last one so far, Shirley. Will look through your list and the new ones soon, and I'll be adding to mine. It's been a long day, been up since 6 this morning. I weeded and did general Fall clean-up several hours and still have a long way to go. Seeds harvested today were from Penstemon "Red Huskers" and "Violet Dusk". One thing I have plenty of are the two types of mixed orange Cosmos seeds, even our UPS guy said he wants some.

Hope all is well, Evelyn, and will mail the seeds you requested and any I have later on that you'd like to try. Keep in touch here on the thread or D-mail me privately. Either way is fine.

Thinking of you, Susie, and hope you get relief at the dentist.

sbish5: Got your dmail; will send a reply shortly and update my list on the other thread :) marti001, I also have Love in a Mist seeds (listed as Nigella "Persian Violet") from Renee's Garden. The seed packet's description begins:
"This special colored Nigella, also called Love in a Mist, has dainty multi-faceted blossoms that open white with sky blue edges, then deepen to a rich indigo-violet hue."
Would you also like some of these?

>> Many of the Zinnias I'm growing now came from seeds you shared.

Were any of those the Benary Giants? I never got very big plants out of them, but then I got kicked out of the bed where I started them, and underwatered them to boot.

>> Hi ya, Corey. I'm already missing those nifty screens you added last year, among a host of seeds you shared.

I gave away all my spare screening except for some funny 8 mesh that has an odd weave so that it seems finer, more like 10-12 mesh. And 24-mesh nylon window screening.

I'm learning not to try to get every possible seed out by rubbing pods into powder. Instead, I take what I can "shake" out of flowerheads, and only pulverize them, seive and pick. if I really "need more seed", as with Salvia.

I also "learned" that I can vacuumn chaff out of the rug, so now I puff as I screen seeds, and I'm willing to lose some lighter seeds into the rug. If they are that light, they might be the less viable ones, so Good riddance. Hey, they don't germinate in the rug, so how viable can they be? ;-)

Susie, I just drop in every now and then, to see how much time I have to get together some seeds to add to the Robin, might have to be on-the-fly.

This year, mostly Asian Greens like Bok Choy, Tatsoi, Spinach Mustard, Chinese broccoli and a n ifty very-cold-hardy Italian heirloom leaf broccoli. That OVERWINTERED on me and then bolted and gave me a lot of seed. Pretty when in bloom!

When I lived in NJ, we were near a little wildlife preserve, and the turkeys took day trips to see what there wqas to eat in surrounding yards. My timid little cat loved to swagger around, "chasing" the hens, or following them, in slow motion around the lawn. Eventually the big lazy tom turkey would get tired of this, come out of the woods, and chase little Toby away - faster and faster as Toby gave up on his dignity in order to stay ahead of the big tom!

When the tom went back into the woods, Toby had to lounge around and swagger a little more to show that no one had chased HIM ... he just happened to be tired of following those turkeys around, and that he sure had taught them a lesson!

Morning Everyone!!

Susie -- sorry about Frankie! :( It stinks to lose a furry friend! We just ran a 5k race that benefits our local animal shelter in honor of the pets we've lost this year! I feel your pain!

pfg - pam - I've got you down for masterwort...I don't think they need anything special since my just flower and spread seeds like little monsters! They do get to be about 25 - 30inches tall but are not out of control...they have beautiful leaves and when bigger grow in a nice rounded mound of leaves for a full look...then in June they send up these nice stems with tiny white flowers...the leaves are the show stoppers tho! I've added a pic for you below! I have mine growing in part sun in many different places in the yard!

I transplanted this one to a flower box outside my window so that I could enjoy it. I have a few seeds that I will include for you if this is what you are looking for. It is only about 18" high. There are some that are 3 or 4 ft. LMK if you want seeds.

PFG - I will get your seeds out in private mail since you are before me on the flight plan.

FOTV and PFG I am so happy to be sharing seeds with you because in Susie's Robin last fall I benifited from some special seeds that you included in the box for sharing. Thank you so much. Africa this spring (missionary work), and I know they are looking for veggie seeds. Should have thought about that earlier but you know we alll get busy with the growing season and projects...Kathy

Pix...just finished rototilling this area..most all the grases are gone, one more round of raking should do it. And then on to creating my magical backyard haven...any spare fairies????? Come to think of it I got these wonderful Fairies in a trade this summer, but no instructions on how to activate...any ideas?

Everyone, sorry to have misslead you on the 3 - 4 foot Cockscomb. I do not have any of this tall variety. I would sure like to find some though. I have the shorter variety but they have 6" - 8" curly heads. They are still blooming and I'm watching for seed. LMK if you are interested in what I have and I'll keep you on a list and send seed to as many people as I can.

Marti, I've put you on the Cockscomb list.

Shirley, I have white Datura seed put aside for you.

Susie, whether I gave you a VIRGINIA BUNCHFLOWER LILY I honestly don't remember but it is certainly a lovely unusual looking plant.

Donna, that 'brainy' head is even prettier than the regular fan-shaped ones. Yes, please I'd love a few seeds. Of the few Amaranth seeds I had, maybe six, three plants are up about 8" tall since sowing in June. Pretty bi-colored ones, Molten Fire and Perfecta I think, but neither has the first sign of a bud. Those I really want to harvest seeds off to have and share.

A fellow DGer was exceptionally generous sharing Japanese Morning Glory seeds. There's no way I'll be able to use all of them and thought I'd ask how many of you would like to receive a sampling. There are lots of packs, some mixed ~ some named. Named ones contain very few seeds, like two to 10 per pack. The easiest way to share them is for you to say how many seeds you'd like -- 5 or 10 -- and indicate your preference for named ones or a mix. I'm not going to list the named ones but the labels will remain on or in the packs.

Susie (Deejay9) I'll mark a pack of each of these for you in the robin. Glad I have so many things that you want! I've got to get out there and collect...we are so close to freezing here. I've discovered that the reseeding annuals are the key to a "full"flower bed and complete well with the Spring weeds. The cosmos, gaillardia, and painted tongue reseed themselves heavy and are just the right height to tuck under the taller perennials.

Cosmos bipinnatus
Asclepias tuberosa (butterfly weed)
California poppy
Statice mix
Pink rain lily

FotV: nice mix of Zinnias on Webshots! The Zinnias that I got (where I expected Benary Giants) were all flat, "dinner plate" blooms, not spherical balls like I expected. Maybe the term is "single" instead of "double" blooms. Maybe they were just not vigorous enough to "fill out" as big plump double blooms.

Thanks for the Zinnia offer, but my small beds are over-committed already to things I really, really want to grow, plus the things that I was lucky enough to establish.

And I still have things from Susie's Round Robin of 1-2 years ago that I haven't even tried yet!
And things from last years Hog Wild Swap that I have not even FILED AWAY yet!

Hi, all.
Susie, adding your requests to my lists (including on the other thread) :) Just a note on the "Musicbox" sunflowers, though: As I told Shirley in a dmail, I'm not sure how good their germination will be. Hopefully, they'll do all right (packed for 2011), but they did get carried around for a while in my backpack between home and the Blind Center where I attend a gardening class. Just so you know (was debating about including these, but decided it would be better for them all to get planted this coming spring than waiting longer sinnce I can't plant them all!) Oh, and there aren't very many of these left, but I'll send what I can to both you and Shirley.

bigtrot: All the ones you picked are fresh seed from this years garden. You should have no trouble getting the maltese cross to germinate.
I only had one trade of the Hellebore and statice, so I let deejay have them.
I should go out and check my statice for seed, I grew a bunch this year for Farmer's market and then they didn't all sell so I put 15 of them in my front yard, LOL, can never have too many straw flowers!

This old wood fence looks terrible and I'm going to cover it up with all the Morning Glories, and Hyacinth Bean vines I can get my hands on. Paula from Brazoria, TX sent me some Hyacinth Beans so have a good start on them. I don't have much to share with all of you this yr, but next year look out I'll have plenty to share. Fruitofthevine: I have all three put in an envelope for you. I can see I'm going to have more diligent about collecting seed next year.
Plants like "lion's tail" make tons of seed and I only collected a few, by shaking the seed pods, while they were still on the tree into a baggy.
I'm still working on those "bear's breeches" seeds. I figure they should be dry any day now, then I will don leather gloves and try to remove them!

Thank you so much, Dee :)

I'll put you down for both the Acorn and Butternut Squash, and Japanese Morning Glories, Susie. As a side dish with baked BBQ chicken tonight, we had cubes of Acorn and Butternut Squash mixed with Carrot and Onion slices hand tossed with olive oil and a sprinkling of Kosher salt. A drizzling of Vermont Maple Syrup during the last few minutes really set off the veggies and they tasted more like a dessert. Since it's just hubs and me, I love simple baked dinners or one-pot meals.

Just so everyone knows, those requesting JMG seeds will receive named ones until the supply gets down to the mixed packs.

Night all.

I'm sitting here thinking about what seeds I'd really like.
I'd love japanese anemones, mallow, mixed morning glories, and low growing annual flowers.
It's funny, living in California, we don't do many annuals. That's because there are so many flowering perennials that grow here.
I love annuals, they are so unexpected. After that first year they just appear where they please.

I lived in Sylmar, CA In 1971 when the earthquake tore apart the town, Olive View Hospital and all the streets. The building I was in went 11 inches off it's foundation.

I lived in Santa Paula, CA in the 1990's when the big one hit there and tore up Northridge and hit as far away as Fillmore, Piru and we also got shaken up pretty good in Santa Paula.

I lived in Ca all my life and yet don't remember riding out quakes like those 2, BUT I did learn something from the 1971 quake. Earthquakes are Mother Natures way of rearranging her house. When you get quakes 6.0 and higher she is moving furniture. Under that she just moved a couch or chair. 7.0 and higher, watch out she is emptying out the house for new furniture and upgrading the house.

She has made me feel more than welcome while participating in the trades & swaps and I can't say THANK YOU enough for her generosity & kindness to a "newcomer"!! And , so, just wanted everyone to know what a great person we are dealing with!! Was going to be able to meet her in person but it fell through on both our ends and am still hoping to meet up with her someday!! Thank you so much Susie!!

The robin has landed in Ohio today (Thursday), and her nest is filled with lots of nice flower seeds! A few I'm not familiar with, so will need to look them up. Tomorrow I'll work on requests, then add some for everyone else to share. What a great opportunity to try new seeds and share the bounty of our harvests with others!
