What happened to the tree in first pic or just the way it's? This tree is on the highway near Chadstone shopping centre, Melbourne.

#1 is a London Plane with some huge burls on. This may be a consequence of pruning damage when it was young, but no-one really knows why they form. The wood on those burls can be very valuable to wood carvers, as it often has very decorative grain.

#2 is a poplar of some sort.

#3, the stem on the left is an Agave flower stem. Not sure about the heavily pruned shrub on the right.
