SOLVED: i saw this large shrub in the devils river flood plain.

large leaves ,purple limbs,looked rather tropical-there were 5or6 scattered down the dry part of the devils river just north of lake amistad texas .largest one about 11ft tall and alittle less wide

It's castor bean (Ricinus communis) - seeds are very toxic.
