I also have a intense red double flowered tropical Hibiscus that my mother received from a friend. That was in 1967 ! I still have the mother plant and have given cuttings to many relatives and friends. It will root in water. It takes many weeks to develope roots.
Although I do not know the name of of this cultivar , it still thrives. I keep it very wet and it does not drop very many leaves. I have done this since I inherited the plant. I do fertilize it regularly with a acid based fertilizer ( Mir-acid) I have it growing in sterile black topsoil with some peat in it. It's like the Energizer bunny, it keeps going and going...
