Found this little critter on top of a large stone - may be difficult to see, but it has a large gold section on the end of its thorax It's approx 1 - 1 1/2" long overall. Can anyone tell me what this is?

Its a Wheel Bug - Arilus cristatus. Be glad you did not pick it up, they can deliver a very painful bite.
