I have only used this when laying down gravel along a path or house wall. Going down about 15cm, laying the geotextile in and then filling with gravel has been successful, I have a customer where I did this 18 years ago and only now are a few weeds beginning to appear, of course over the years a lot of organic matter gets in there between the stones and forms a basis for weeds to grow. A good investment I find. Leaving it on the surface is going to be an annoying short term solution as every time you try to clean leaves and such you will be snagging on the textiles.

I might add to this by saying, of course, that I wasn't using the wimpy light weight stuff sold in gardening centres but heavy duty road builders' stuff.
