Mittsy has updated her address for those that need it. If you can't access, please contact her directly or me.
Sew Sassee has asked we hold off mailing her's for a bit.
How it works: Each person on the list will send out Nine 5" x 5" blocks to each person on the list and receive Nine blocks back. Use 100% cotton fabric only please. Each block should be different unless the member states that duplicates are alright. I would like to make this economical enough that EVERYONE will be able to particpate. PLEASE state your choice for your charms with an alternative. My hope is that everyone who wants will be able to particpate and not make a special trip to purchase fabric.

New thread, over 200...
Dad has been cleared by the MD to go home, he's getting dressed, I'm giving him some privacy.
There a BUNCH of easy short cuts on the clothes that are this small. This is a project I used to really love. I'll send an email to my Sis and see if she has any of the patterns and let you know if any get unearthed.
No hurry here Karen. Unless there is a change in Mom, I will be leaving next week to go back down south. Plans are to take her back to where she lived with my sister. She is so exhausted from this last UTI that we do have our concerns whether or not she can actually stand the hour ride each way. It is something she has requested and Hospice is helping us arrange this. Funny, because they wouldn't let me take Ross back to the house for a while before he passed. I guess each location is different.
Things have changed a great deal concerning our older years Marion. Sometimes think the hospitals and nursing homes allow this so the patients won't come back and they would no longer be responsible for them. Just my opinion...
Actually Barb, we are only taking her home for a couple of hours...no way my sister and I can care for her. Things weren't so good today but we are proceeding with out plans. I did talk with a nurse at the nursing home and she too is concerned now that mom is starting to slip. Her body just is worn out from the constant UTI (only about 10 days now between episodes). She is calling me tomorrow as there is some concern I might need to go down sooner than planned (Tuesday..next week) She even expressed some concerns whether or not mom will make it to the 10 but did say "it is out of our hands now". So it is one day at a time for us. Of course, she could rally as she has done in the past but it is getting harder and harder each time.
Just got a call as well at 5:30 this morning to say my MIL is in critical condition...
Had posted on Oct. thread but it really should have here as I've beenusing 5" x 5" blocks..will check computer and look for a few star patterns to add to the upper sides of the tree then hopefully quilt it this weekend and have another treasure for under the tree
Thanks everyone. I don't mean to sound crass but she could only fight these infections so long before her ability to "bounce" back was possible. Waiting to hear from the nursing home today about how she is doing. I was told she has reacted similar in the past and that today she could be some better.
Betty, hope you receive better news about your MIL. Why does everything happen this time of year?
Brrr have micro heater on in the office..guess Mall doesn't have the heat up as yet!
Cut all my scraps on the weekend into 5x5 charms, brought all that I had (past swaps) into the office today to occupy me, sewing them into blocks of 4..next step will be trying to be creative with them..no sense having them in a drawer, making something is better than nothing!
Just got my call from the nursing home (good to get to know the nurses personally) and was told mom is a little better today. Her color is still not really good and she says she is extremely tired but over all feels a little better. Sue (sister) is on her way in to spend the day with her so will get a full update tonight. So for now I am not planning to leave until the first of the week...always subject to change.
Pat, I hope your Dad gets well soon. Problems with the nose can be miserable at best.
Talked with my sister earlier and she said Mom just wasn't wanting to eat today. She said she is just to tired but Sue finally got her to eat her soup and drink some milk. Will talk with her tonight when she gets back home and get all info from the day. Her memory is definitely failing now which is so strange to have to deal with.
Things are going well Marion. Norm had his second chemo on Wed and so far he is doing good. He gets very tired but we all know that is part of the game. The side effects so far have been easy to deal with. One very interesting thing this time though. For some reason, while on the chemo, his blood sugar numbers are drastically going down to the point where he carries fast dissolving sugar in his pocket all the time. He has decreased his insulin usage and his numbers are holding between 100 and 130 which for him is unheard of. His numbers are usually around 180 - 200. He has also found that if he doesn't keep up with small snacks, they go down to 80 or below very rapidly. We are going to talk with the doc about this and maybe there is a dosage of this drug that may help milloins of diabetics!!!!! Wouldn't that be a wonderfulthing!!!!
I'm doing good - hate the oxygen tube but I'll deal with it!! Been sewing for the swaps and family and making more coloring book totes. I took 8 more up on Wed and the nurses were so happy to see them. Got to keep going with those.
Hope this finds Mom a bit better today. My prayers for you and your family do continue every day...
Interesting about the blood sugar. Thankfully mine and Kim's is staying under control our diet; however, I was given insulin when I was in the hospital for the drug reaction. It jump way up. Scary. How well I remember the days of the chemo treatments. Ross wasn't usually sick from his but when he was, it was just horrible. He would be so drained.
Sounds like you are doing well and extremely busy. Needing some fabric for the bags? If so let me know and I will do some more down sizing of this stash...make room for newer fabrics. LOL
Mom is holding her own, still not eating much and color isn't very good but then she has been through a lots. We are trying to get everything into place for the weekend of the 10th and her trip to the house. Unbelievable how much planning it takes but if we can do this, then it will be well worth all the effort.
I can always use the fabric for the kids. It takes a fat quarter to make one bag. I've been concentrating on buying the pellon for the them and the contrast colors. I have all kinds of muslin that I'm using for the linings. We go to the Dollar Store for the coloring books and crayons... I meant to ask when I was there this time about the teens - does anyone ever remember them? Maybe that will become the project for next year.
Yes, I am keeping myself busy. It's my way of coping I guess.
I so hope all goes well with this trip for your Mom. I know how much it will mean to her for it to happen. I'll pray extra hard for her okay?
Sewing can be therapy Betty as I am sure you know. I think I got more sewing done on the days after Ross had chemo/radiation than I have since. He would sleep for about 4 hours when we got home so I used that time to destress myself.
Yes, I think I might feel better but then each time I go I see how much she has declined and that is upsetting. Unfortunately I can't take my machine to my sisters because of all the cats...I do crochet alots when I am there but that just isn't the relief I get from my machine.
I know I am not the only one experiencing problems at this time in life and I am sending hugs and prayers out to all the others. Please remember to first...take care of yourselves. That is critical.
Marion, drive safe. I of course will get your charms there at just the wrong time, but Im guessing Kims checking the mail. Mine are perfect.
Betty, blessing to the family on your MIL.
I have poked my thumb to death checking my blood sugar. Im not sure that what sent me to the hospital this time, but Im darn sure going to figure it out before going to the neurologist . He might want to know ;-O
Pam, yes Kim will be home as she won't finish for the Thanksgiving break until the 16th. Besides she is in the final stages of turning in her project to finish her Specialist Degree. Come on pay jump!!!;-) Only if the unspeakable happens will she be coming south before the following week. I do plan to return home about the 15th to help celebrate the 29th anniversary of her 21st birthday on the 19th of this month. Yikes, where did the time go?
had the last month that the Foxy Lady (my boat) has been in the yard and no shrink wrap nor bottom end servicing done, when do they decide to do it, tonight..Greg spent all night with his grandmother in the hospital, went to work, just got home and I had to call to say shrink wrap / mechanic is here..am sure it's the last thing he wanted to do.
Oh oh, had posted Marion had sent me charms earlier in the month, went back and looked yep I said they were from Marion, now I say these are from Marion..did I mix them up?? Anybody recognize them..with all the todo with MIL's death I may have screwed up
not mine, as they are still here...spent a few hours cutting today, as a matter of fact...cut a nice gouge into one of my rulers!! :( don't know how I managed to do it ??? decided to quit cutting...before I end up cutting myself...
I havent sent mine either, Im sure glad you posted those pictures tho, as it helped me with a few I wasnt sure of. They are now ready to send.
I had Pats ready to send and then found some more fabric that was appropriate, so I just tore into Hers to add a few more. I have Mitsy's ready to send. I also have the Christmas and winter theme envelopes ready, but I cant remember at the moment who gets them.
Oh, and Im going to send Barbs. Ive stewed long enough. Its hard with just one fabric...what if they dont like it. lol...then send at least two.
Next time they are on sale, I need a new smaller size cutting mat. I dont know how or when, but the one Im cutting charms on has warped, and its really 'trying' me.

Pam I think we think a lot alike ^_^
one of the Christmas is meee...I have most pieces cut, have to get some envelopes tomorrow, they will be going out soon...before I re-think again!!
With all I've had going on and doing I've screwed up once again, found a pack in my tote bag..drats and more drats, will take a photo tonight in hopes someone knows who they are from..give me a smack won't you..I'm never this careless..mind just isn't working properly
I was wondering, with the blue and white fabric, Linda. Should all the pieces have blue and white on them or some blue and white and then maybe some solid blue. I can 'cover' either, Im just thinking that all my blues and whites together dont all really go together.
I was holding back the three that I still owe a block to from the exchange last year. Since the charms are all ready to go, Im going to just send the charms and finish the blocks after. If I owe you a block...Thunder, Robin and Pat, let me know if other colors or patterns would work better for you.
If any one wants to send Bev's to my house, I will see that she gets them...just be sure to mark them for her or for me as we both are doing Christmas. she is away on a vacation that was a gift to her husband from his parents. I do not know if they got an extension from the landlord, or if they will have to move as soon as they get back???
Pam, yes I am home. It is something I have had for years but why it chose to flare up now...who knows. Doctor gave me a shot on Monday plus some anti inflammatory meds but still tricky using it. No fun to be driving down I-75 , need to brake and can't move the knee. Not something I want to tempt. Some of my cousins have stepped in to help my sister take mom home for the day. Really upsets me but I am not much help like this.
On the funny side, you should see how I go up and down the stairs...get it done but it is slow!!!
When we lived in Roanoke, the house had wood stairs. Coming from FL, I wanted no stairs, but that doesnt happen much. It had the Master downstairs tho and I literally did not go up those stairs except to look at the house to buy and to clean it when we moved. The kids would run up and down in their socks. Totally freaked me out. They loved it tho, tied every doll and toy they had to a string at one time or the other and hung it out the windows. I personally dont see the fun in that, but they and their friends sure did. I would love to have those days back, but dont really want to live thru the stuff that came after again :-x. Rambling, sorry, blame it on the meds.
Marion, I'm sure the family understand...
omg reflexes when driving I75 is a must, can't play around with your safety..I think you should pick one floor and stay there before you do more damage to yourself.
Pam, we used to go up into the attics in some of the old houses we lived in as kids and tie napkins or handkerchiefs to teddy bears and toy soldiers, toss them out the little window and watch them fall.. LOL They didn't exactly float as planned, though! We ran up and down stairs too, or bumped up and down on our behinds from step to step in a race.. Mom didn't let it go on too long though-too much noise with 4 kids.
Marion, sorry to hear about that knee.. Mom just had another knee replacement last week, dr found 2 bone spurs that were thumb size. She should be going home from Rehab Center by tomorrow, doing fairly well getting around on her own for the last 3 days, with no help from the nurse/aides.
Think I'll jump in the next charm swap, Betty's ideas get me to thinkin' - sometimes that's good, sometimes it isn't LOL
LOL, Betty I wish I could pick one floor but unfortunately the bathrooms are either upstairs or downstairs and I usually am working on the level where the kitchen, DR and LR are. I am being extremely careful. Yes, the family (sister) does understand. Just plainly told me she didn't need to have to worry about me walking or falling. Not to mention the stress of worrying about me driving down there.
Jump right in, so many things we can do with the charms..
I will purchase a yard of black and white at Joann's this weekend and do a 'tote' bag for SIL, just sat here for last hour and cut up a good number of them into strips so I can go around the piece I'm working on..
have any of you used on a quilt the little round diamond stones??? set with heat gun???
thought a few might look spectacular of the big christmas tree quilt.
I would have on this one, but if little Bella decides to make her appearance early, I'll be in IN for awhile, and am still working on her quilt. Finally decided how to quilt it, now IF it works out the way I want it to, I'll be happy... still have binding to put on the LQS quilt for them, but I can do that while I'm there.
I'm thinking maybe after the holidays, when things calm down if someone has leftover christmas scraps that they don't want. Bella will need a stocking and a play quilt for next Christmas!
OK, lunch is over... back to sewing!
The LQS here is doing a BOM of black/whites.. the center squares are from a panel fabric with christmas patterns: snowman, tree, etc. then it's (if I remember correctly) log cabined in B/W's.. I didn't get a pic of it, but it sure was pretty! am thinking the squares could be embroidery?
One of my best friends is moving from WA back to AZ & WI. DRATS! It was so nice having her just 4 hours away, I was seeing her about every 3 months or more. She'd like to move permanent to WI but is having a hard time finding a job there so she decided to interview for snowbird jobs in AZ for pharamacy, AZ has a lot of "only 6 month" kind of positions.
Got back in MI yesterday afternoon, good trip, just a shade under 8 hours. I only made one stop to get gas and go. I don't eat while traveling except for some crackers & cheese I munch every so often, just enough to keep my sugar from plummeting. I'm heading up to Traverse City today, just a 4 hour trip this time, hubby is coming up this after noon, Hopefully on Monday I can get my swap pieces cut and mailed no later than Wed. So sorry to be so slow, I really didn't expect to stay in TN this long. I also have 9 or so bean bag chairs to make for Christmas this year, It's one thing all the kids love to have, even the little ones. Knuckle down, buckle down time.
Barb, they told me to put ice on the knee so that is what I am doing. I do have meds to take when it is really painful. I didn't take any yesterday and last night I knew it. I just assumed it was hurting when I got up so...wrong! This isn't new and I know it will take a while to recover.
Marion - bags of frozen peas or corn make wonderful ice packs. They can be used over & over and don't leak. Nice that they are flexible when frozen. I always have a bag in the freezer marked in BIG BOLD BLACK marker as Ice Pack!!!!! Definately do not want to eat after it's been re-frozen doz of times.
I get veggies I dont like when they are on sale, just for the ice pack, we werent very good about marking them so the next best thing was to get something I woudnt eat.
In a bad Mother moment years ago, I told one of my girls that she looked like an Elephant on Parade. It actually didnt have anything to do with her weight, it was her outfit was way to big. Needless to say, they will make sure I go to my grave regreting saying that. It was a bad move, but like I say, I didnt think it was about weight. Anyway...would you believe that the Fat Quarter shop has a special today...Elephants on Parade.
I make my own gel pacs and keep them in the freezer. Mix 2 cups water and 1 cup alcohol, seal in baggie or foodsaver bag, and voila! Frozen veggies are great because they mold to your body, but the gel pac does an even better job.
Got my charms all cut and packaged. Dont have anyone home to take me to the PO so it will be tuesday with the holiday that they get out. EVERYONE should have a package by next Fri.
It appears Im going to have to do alot of parent sitting myself next year. This weekend Im going to try to learn the ladder hooking and give myself a refresher on crocheting. My mother would never allow the mess of sewing in her house but I can get away with something that follows me around or word puzzles or something like that.
Does anyone crochet or knit, what and where is/do you get the best yarn for the $$. I would like some soft, good weight, acrilic. Im so allergic to wool I just cant use that.
I am crocheting granny squares for an afghan, it is a white background, green Christmas tree in the middle, with red border squares. I bought bernat yarn at wal mart, as that is the only place here to buy yarn from. I will post pictures when it is done. Other than that, I can't tell you much about different yarns or prices.
I crochet and have purchased yarn at Joannes, Hobby Lobby and Michael's. I got some at Hobby Lobby that is really soft and I love working with it but can't remember the name at the moment. Duh!!
Mom update: My sister just called. The got Mom in the van with no problems, she enjoyed the ride out to the house, has been pushed (no small fete) around the yard to check her key lime tree, Meyers lemon and so she can see her Pondarosa lemon tree. She is inside on the screened porch insisting she can walk (no way after 2 1/2 yr. bedridden) but enjoying the cats. I did talk with her and she sounds so good but got the usual lecture about being careful and taking care of my knee. Yeap, she is still giving us orders!!! :-) We have been blessed today!
O Marion that gives me chill bumps. Very good news indeed. If 'tomorrow' isnt as great, isnt a blessing you can have a day like this 'banked'. Some good days in the yard are so much better than year of bad days in a nursing home. As far as giving orders, I SO hear you on that one.
My Mother asked me totally seriously the other day if I have had my H turn the spotlights on and mow the yard when he gets home from work. . I said " No Mother, not after working all day, its not that big of a deal" She responded,
"If it was me, I would have put the fear of God him and got him out there". I said "yes Mother...I know" ;-o)
I shall try wal mart on the yarn. No hobby lobby here
I think all the places sell the same brand of yard. My Mom liked the 1 lb skeins for afghans. She liked the way it worked up.
Such a BEAUTIFUL afternoon here. mid-70s and a clear blue sky. Way too nice to stay indoors for long. Think I need to go water the out door plants. Tomorrow I'll do some weeding and get the last plants in the ground.
I do buy from WM when I need something, but sometimes I really have to go through the bin looking for the same lot #s if I'm making an afghan or a project that needs more than just a couple skeins. I've only run across a couple skeins that had multiple knots in them, but usually the yarns are fine.
I think they're all kind of connected at the root, so to speak.. Quilters World links up with Clotilde alot too, it seems. I like to browse Clotilde too, more for ideas on color combos and patterns, but signed up for all the catalogs in case I want to browse in my recliner at night. I used to buy from Annies alot, and Herschenners was more for their sales on emb. floss packs and emb. kits. If I was going to do all the stuff I've saved in folders, I'd never eat, sleep or surf...! LOL
Got back from the Bahamas last night, nice little getaway in to the land of tranquility. Kind of nice to be home though, it got boring at the end, lol.
As for our housing situation. I've been told we still technically have a legal lease until June because we only gave a verbal, lets hope that is true because all other things I had lined up flopped. :( Of course, now I have to unpack all my stuff and say the heck with it, I'm so over trying to find that needle in the haystack so let's just pray that the landlord doesn't take us to court and say a verbal is all he needed. Our lease said we could break it at anytime because we were searching for a home, so yeah. But, I am not going to worry any more. It's in God's hands, he is much better at handling stress than I am.
Hope everyone else is fine. There were too many posts to try to catch up on.
I mailed some a week ago today and they are not there yet either I guess. The rest are at the mail store and will go out today. I sure hope they dont take a week. At least there is not a weekend or a holiday in between when they should be there.
Mail in Orlando FL is super slow in the winter. Last year I mailed my daughter a package "priority" mail and it took her 3 weeks, yep 3 weeks to get it. I was livid. She only lives a half hour away, I could have drove it there faster. Certain post offices get bogged down, ours is one of them. If I mail a package from a Soho or UPS office it gets there faster than a regular USPS, weird right?
I am such a visual person, craft shows are a winner for me too. I think that is why I have so much fabric and no projects finished.
Even doing these charms. I keep thinking I cant send this or that, and second guess myself, and its just because I cant visualize what could be done with them. People who can visualize are very lucky indeed.
Doing the DG workshop on-line here so having to see what projects can be sent via mail that doesn't cost a fortune to send or make..my most favorite time of year..we're doing skates, I've an idea for stick snowman and am hoping I can find something that is just too adorable to include in packages..looking forward to a full day..
Always buy 1 of what I will copy, after all the creative individual needs to earn a living as well..
Got squares and block squares cut while having my coffee here and watching Hawaii Five 0 lol
now to decide if I shall cut Suzanne's fabric or continue to make a top
These are the squares I have received so far. Amazingly, no repeats and only 3 that I already have, and I have a ton of Christmas fabrics. Top row L to R..Betty, Bev, Barb, & Marion. Bottom row Mittsy. & Robin. Thank you so much ladies, I love them.
I'm getting really worried, NO one has received the charms my husband mailed 2 weeks ago! I think the return address was on it... pastel oversized envelope? Anybody get charms without an return address maybe? I wonder what black hole they have disappeared into, ALL of them!
Doc, did he "forget" to mail them the day he was supposed to?? then get them out at a later date??
that has happened to me... and he conveniently forgot to mention !! until I said something about no one saying their packages arrived !!!
Nah, I asked him. I even asked if you 'put the stamps on them' himself and dropped them in the mail box. Thinking maybe he didn't take them to the clerk but he says he took them to the clerk. I was thinking the same thing as YOU!! ... He didn't want to fess up... but I asked and double asked so I don't know. Just frustrated!!
Pat, I can so relate to your concerns. One year when I was still working with the festival in Gainesville, I mailed 200 vendor confirmation letters with booth assigned numbers. On about 50 received theirs...talk about mass confusion!!!!
These are from Lanakila on top and Pam on bottom. Thank you both they are so pretty. I have such a nice collection of Christmas squares, i'm going to have to find just the right tree skirt to make with them.
I just wanted to update my list of whom I have received charms from. At this time of year things are so often lost or delayed in the mail, so I want to make sure none of the goodies have been overlooked by me. My husband is really, really bad about putting down the mail just willy-nilly so I don't always find it promptly!
I have received charms from:
I mailed out my charms within a week of getting the mailing list, so if you haven't received a packet from me please, please, please let me know and I'll send you another!!!
well, I actually used only my fabrics from home, thats why some got a few more than nine, I just kept looking till I ran out of finding something. If bright was in your wish list ( pat and robin) I could have gone on and on lolol
As for the blk and wht. Im glad you like them, I was at jo anns and found tons of new blk and ht I had never seen and was so mad I didnt see that sooner. Actually, joanns was loaded with fabric that hasnt been there for ages. I dont know what got them buying new stuff, but Im glad to see it.
However and whatever your holiday consist of, have a blessed, peaceful, and safe one!!!
Me too Karen! Looking forward to starting a project.
On Monday I will try to get all NEW charms cut and sent on Tuesday. After 3 long weeks who knows where all the charms are that I sent out but NO one has received any that I mailed and I'm bummed out. I won't have near the selection I had to cut from this time. Oh well...
Same for me, dont worry about it. Heck, I still owe you a pink and black block, so double dont worry about it!!
Thunder, yours are the only ones I still have. I have decided Im going to have to bend the rules a little. We shall see. I just got to thinking about them to much...over-thought, if you know what I mean. Thats code for, Im a fussy cutting dim whit lolol A skill Im still learning.
Thanks all... I'll see what happens. Today is the family dinner and I'm waiting for the "mud pie" crust to chill so I can put the next layer on. thank goodness it was at my sister's house. We lost power this morning and the power company said it would be after 2PM before they can fix their problems
We have given up for now Pat, thanks for asking. It was just too much stress. After the holidays we will start up again. Been praying that the house will come to us.
In the meantime, I've been trying to keep myself preoccupied with sewing. I just set up a thread. I am trying to get ideas for what to make for 78 families. Go check it out if you'd like. Have a good night.
I've more charms than I can possibly use up right now..
Brought what I have into the office and will work on a tote bag for SIL for Christmas
Brought in noses, stars, hearts for winter snowman we are doing on the 6th DG workshop, thought I'd paint them and save on shipping those colors sooo am hoping to have them all done by noon and start sewing..
Another busy day at the office..it's a snow squall kind of day, wish I were home
I am happy to report that about an hour ago I got off the phone with a friend of ours and she has an "extra" house, lol, and is willing to let it go super cheap and we can move in for January! I have been in the house before because this was her old home but my husband hasn't seen it yet. We hope to take the official tour on Sunday and then if everything is good, which I am sure it is, we will be done! Hurray! I am really praying that this is it. I said I was going to sit back and wait, and she just called me out of the blue, so yippee. Oh and Thunder, I'll only be about a half hour away from you because it's in Clermont, so yeah, maybe we can get together more. Its not super big but it isn't tiny like I thought either, 4 bedroom, 2.5 bath, 2,295 square feet across the street from what I thought was a lake, but is really a retention pond. Keeping fingers, toes crossed and praying that this is the answer, please, let my picky hubby like this one, oh boy... Just wanted to update everyone since I was busting at the seams.
Pattern I used is the same one I've been doing totes with forever but Barb had given me a tote bag on her and Norm's visit and it was done with charm squares so I incorporated both patterns..
Sister-in-law Marg has a tendency to lose everything so put the skirting with pull strings so when loaded to the hilt her belongings will be safe.
used charms inside as well
You can see that the charms I randomly used were put to good use..thanks again girls..she'll be thrilled to know the charms were cut by all you DG'ers..
Looking at the clock, if I'm a good girl I'll get all these DG Christmas Workshop snowman/skates boxed and labelled, ready for shipping.
Tomorrow no sewing, have to hand sew deer hyde to the snowmobile dickie for my godson..another week and Christmas will be over for me and I'll be as bored as can be...please someone start a new swap lol
Wow, 2,295 is some big house..lucky you, you will surely have a sewing room if all goes well..here's hoping..sending prayers that you will get it and hubby will love the location. Bonus living closer to Thunder!!
Yep and Thunder lives 4 miles from my father-n-law, lol... So yeah I would be able to see my brother, my sister-n-law, aka Thunder and my mother-n-law and father-n-law. Oh plus I would only be about 15 minutes from my eldest daughter. So, it would be a win, win for me. BUT, my hubby would need to drive about 40 miles one way a day to work, oh well, he will get over it, lol. And yes, there is an area for a sewing room, mine, mine, mine, lol...
Me too. I gave him the "lecture" tonight and said you'd better like it, lol... but I think more than anything he likes the price. It may not be our permanent home for retirement but at least for the next 8 years or so it will be our home and it would be ours, no one to tell us what color to paint the inside or whatever. And he also likes that it is a KB home, they are solid homes, so he was tickled about that, now to just get him to like the location and the inside and we are good to go. Hee hee.
What a wonderful, quick idea. Leave it to Thunder!!
Bev, I hope everything works out for you with the house. The frustration can be so overwhelming at this time of year...I moved in December of 2005 and boy I thought I would never get over that!!! Sounds like a very good size house to have, plus your very own sewing room. Perfect!!!!
I personally love Clermont. Do they have good schools there? If so, thats a plus. Schools always dictated where I looked. Had to pass up alot. Bonnie, on the FL forum is from Clermont I believe.
We had a little business in Leesburg and it was 45 minutes. We ended up selling it because of that. We had to be there to early and stay too late 6 days a week. It for sure wasnt worth it.
If its 45 minutes and you dont have anything to really worry about, it would not be so bad. Im guessing in Orlando just about anywhere you go is a good 30 minutes anyway.
Well, that was a big fat no on the house. Not that we didn't like it but of course of all the days to hit traffic, it would be when my husband's trying to see if he likes the drive to the house. First it took us 30 minutes to go 2 miles! On the way there and then on the way back, car crash, so another delay, took an hour to get home. So much for being home owners. Blah...
Awwww so sorry Bev, but I'm a huge believer in meant to be. When it's right you will know for sure.
I'm having a hard time with that myself right now. I'm sure when the time is right we will have a workable deal on our house. The original offer wanted possession by Dec. 20th...LOLOLOLOL No way in the world that can happen. There were also some other unworkable conditions which I'm sure we will be able to come to agreement on.
Thanks everyone for the encouraging words this morning. I just get so frustrated. I appreciate the uplifting words.
Karen where those people crazy? lol... take possession of the home 5 days before Christmas? oh my, yeah, no way for sure. I'm sure they will come to agreement too because they clearly are excited and want to get in there and celebrate. :0)
O gosh yes, dont be discouraged. The more houses you look at the more you know what you want and dont want. This month is bad for home buying, not many people listing new ones, but come the new year, they will start flooding the market. Just stake out your desired location and keep looking there. It will work out.
Not that I wanted to say anything, but its alot harder on everyone than you might think when Father/husband is on the road so much, especially if a stressful drive. You just might have gotten you Christmas miracle early and dont realize it. When your stuck paying those property taxes, you wanna at least be stuck somewhere you like. Out taxes are twice what our first mortgage was...errrrrrrrrrrrrr
Pam, oh how I remember the taxes in Gainesville...much, much different here! Sorry.
Bev, not that I want you to have to be looking for 3 years but it did take us that long before we found what we would consider buying as our retirement home. It got to be a joke so just for fun, we made a list of all the things our dream home would have. We did find it finally and at a price we were willing to pay. So please keep looking and it will come.
Oh yes, just to show how silly we got...one thing on the list was a master bedroom with a balcony overlooking water. Got it! ;-)
When we were looking for the house in FL I kept a spreadsheet that listed everything we NEEDED and then the "nice to haves". Every listing I went through I put in and then noted what it had. Ended up with over 50 homes on the list & then scratched the bottom 20. Scratched a few more after we saw the neighborhood.
My Realtor was amazed that I had charted it all out but it worked. The house that I had in my spreadsheet #1 slot was the house we ended up buying.
When my cousin was looking for her house I told her to do the same & she was amazed how much easier it made looking through listings. You can easily toss those that don't meet the "NEED" list.
The list really does help. After a while we did get very silly with our list thus the master bedroom wish was added. Imagine our surprise when we actually found the house. Since my late husband wanted us to jointly buy the house with our daughter (took long time for me to agree but glad I did finally) we each made our list and then combined it into one. It was funny how many things were the same on all three list.
After we found the house, we each made a list of improvements we would like to make..yes, leave to me to want to change things around. We managed to get many done before Ross died but some Kim and I are still working on. Ross had even drawn up a sketch of what I told him I wanted for a china cabinet in the dining room and we finally had that done and installed. So he is still very much a part of this house. Insert: smiley face and grin!
We did the same...knew the 30+ yo kitchen counter & cabinets would need to be changed out; knew we needed a larger MBR Suite and screen porch changed to sun porch. But all the "bones" we needed were there.
LOL, kitchen is still to be done. I have a serious issue as the kitchen in the home in Gainesville was a custom designed and I know what I want incorporated but this one is so small in comparison. Still working on ideas. Screening in upper deck is a must if we are going to really enjoy it to the fullest. The bugs just won't share like they should!!
Did get the flocked wallpaper off and avocado carpet ripped out quickly. Slowly but surely it will get there. The dark brown carpeting and cedar shingles on bath walls in downstairs area has been removed and the black/brown paneling is in the process of being finished to paint and hang wallpaper. Everything was so dark thus the name :The Dungeon. A work in progress, shall we say.
Its funny, I think I probably said this before...getting old, but the #1 thing on my no no list was that when you opened the front door, you better not be able to see in the kitchen. That would still be on my list. Garages were another issue. Some would be so short you could not get a car in and then walk in front of it, or worse, it would be situated on the side and you would have to back up two or three times just to get in the darn thing. ALWAYS turn on the water, even with city water. Once you get stuck someplace with no water pressure, its sheer hell till you move. If I had another life, I would be a realtor for sure...just love houses and getting a good fit. OOO and how many houses do you see that have the breakfast 'nook' no bigger than you can fit a tv tray, and then they would have a door going out on the patio 'to boot'. Just how are you suppose to get around a table to that door??? Some crazy stuff out there.
Another nice day, already moved a camellia bush this morning, they dont like moving, but it was small and the ivy was taking it over. BIL is out of town so Im heading over to his garden to harvest some collards, broccoli, and lettuce.
Marion, Im so not kidding, once I can get out of this county...adios. The taxes really drag you down. On top of that, my ambulance ride last month was 700 bucks...clearly tax money is not going to them. Im grateful and irked all at the same time.
Understand completely Pam. I didn't realize just how expensive it was there until we moved. Our utilities here are about 1/2 what they were there and the house is 800 sq. feet larger. Go figure.
I have a camellia that needs to be move but it isn't very big. Hopefully my yardman can do that on Friday...knee just isn't allowing me to use the shovel very well. Envy you being able to get all those veggies...love collards!!!
Thanks for a great time today Jean. It was just wonderful to see you again and hear of your adventures with Kayla. Glad to hear Brian is doing so well. Have a safe trip back to FL tomorrow.
Cher since we are so close, we need to get together more now that I'm not afraid to drive a distance by myself. I so enjoyed today.
House hunting wouldn't be bad if it were on our terms but we are in a house that is going to $1800 a month rent come 2013 and I am not looking forward to it and I know one of two things is going to happen either 1) we are going to end up signing a lease for a year at that price and be stuck here or 2) they are going to put the other tenant in that they had lined up when that other house deal fell through. Either way I think it is going to be ugly and the stress of the whole thing just frustrates me.
Since your coming up on 2013, maybe you can find another house to rent, 1800 is alot with all the houses on the market, shoot, even an apartment for 6 months and store your furniture .At least you wouldnt be stuck with something you dont really want . Seems it he really did have something lined up for your place, he would have had to give you some sort of notice by now. Also, make sure to add your mortgage payment, taxes, property insurance and h/o fee if there is one, together plus extra for repairs in your own place and your probably going to be pretty close to 1800 anyway. I wish I could help...sure been there. Worst thing you can do tho, is throw good money after bad with a house thats 'to good to be true'. Make sure the a/c is pretty new, thats a 8K replacement...also the roof.
Keeping good thoughts.
Oh Thank you Barb and Jean it was a nice little trip I have to say I enjoyed it. It was so nice to meet you Jean sorry it wasn't as warm as you are used to but i love it cold and it was 61 here not bad for Dec. and thank you both for the ornaments they are just amazing love them
I agree Barb but Ican go closer to you next time and check out your neck of the woods we will have to pick a date .
Jean, you are so lucky to have shops in your area. The closest one to my area is either Lake City (haven't checked out yet) or Moultrie, GA.
I have been to Suzanne's in Moultrie and it is really great. Oh forgot the quilt shop in Trenton, Fl. That isn't just a quilt shop but more like a stitchers complex...everything. Including a cafe with delicious food and desserts. Neat place too, old Coke plant converted into shops.
Marion is that shop "online"? what is the name? I googled trenton, and it would take me almost three hours to get there, not using 175. I really do not like to drive on that!! now I need to figure out where Jean is...think I looked her up before but can not remember the details???
the two closest shops to me, that I know of have recently closed :(
Yes and it is marked on my calendar! Neat place and Stephanie has more creative ideas than you can imagine...not to mention all her talents. She did a lot of the remodeling on the interior of the shops. She was my very first quilting instructor...1 week after I had had major surgery but she insisted I not cancel. She arranged a very appropriate place/chair for me to sit in at the first session lo these many years ago.
Betty, Pam is right about all the exits but not knowing the area, I-75 and Newberry would be the best...stay on the road until you come to Trenton, right at the stop light on the main drag...can't miss it.
Just a reminder that it's ok to send my charms out to me at the Orlando address. We haven't found anything but we won't move until next year at this point anyways. I know I received a few but I am missing quite a bit. I'm in no rush but didn't know if they were held off because of my home searching or sent out.
I would attempt to sing but I am just to pooped from having worked in the yard all day. So I will just wish you the Happiest of Birthdays and tell you like my kids used to tell me; "In honor of your birthday, I planted a camellia bush" Of course, there version was usually something they had bought for themselves. Long standing family joke.
Let's see in January I can say to son #4, "in honor of your birthday I have ordered my First Knock Out Rose!!! A tribute to my boxer!" Maybe if I do this for each of the boys birthdays it's won't hurt my feelings as much when they screw up and don't contact me on Mother's day???
Thanks for the birthday wishes. I had a lovely day! My birthday twin and fellow liver lover, Arthur turned 80 and a condo celebration was enjoyed by all attendees. We've all been invited back for leftovers on New years eve, A sad note, our condo president wasn't in attendance and when a guest went to check on him, he was found at his computer. He had passed away, we are waiting to hear if it was a massive heart attack. My sister arrives today from NY and will be staying with us for a week. Then we'll take her to Helene's neck of the woods to meet up with her husband and enjoy a week at their timeshare. Helene, are you available to meet with me for lunch?
I got my charms from Thunder yesterday, sure wish I hadn't left my camera in Vero Beach. Love the fall selection of colors, thanks so much.
Thunder, Ive just now sent out your package. Im sorrry it was so far behind the others.
Funny how you get something in your mind. I wanted NEW snowman fabric so it would be surprise. I liked nothing, or at least nothing that would fit into a 5" square. Lots of big snowmen. Dont know if you all saw the fabric with the snow ladies with bandana (triangle head scarf things. totally blank on their name) and horn rimed glasses. Cute, but not so Christmasy.
#4 here!! Thanks Thunder and yes the block with some black looked like snow flakes to me too!! THANKS, beautiful charms, especially liked the pinwheel candy. I have 2 fabrics that will go GREAT with that fabric! Both have pinwheel candy
glad you like them, would you please give Kim a hug for me...she sounds like a very special teacher!!!
wish my Waylon had a few like her, he had many difficulties going through school, and looking back I think a few better teachers, would have been a blessing for him. some how he made it??
Thunder, I really do love the squares...can't wait to get started using all from this swap but will have to be after the holidays. Things are getting busy.
Of course I will give Kim a hug for you. I will have to say she truly found her niche...teaching. Not to say there aren't some years that her students drive her insane but that happens with all teachers, I think. She has an usually good group this year, careful screening before letting into class...good grade averages and not just "stuck" there.
I have always felt it takes a very VERY SPECIAL person to become a teacher, and an even more special person to be good at it !!! so yes please give her that hug!!! sure hope students parents, realize how great she is!!!!
ANOTHER MYSTERY SOLVED!!! My husband just found ALL of the envelopes stuffed back into our PO box saying they had insuffient funds on them!! He had them WEIGH them etc so why I don't know they should reject them!! Anyhow, he just called me at work and he dutifully put the extra postage on them and mailed them out!! So you will all received TWO envelopes from me! MUCH better than none!!! I feel so much better!!! LOL
