Hi Todd,
Your explanation of 'lacecaps' having an out ring of STERILE florets was the one I had always learned and believed. I was therefore 'shocked and stunned' to hear a botanist on the BBC in Britain explaining that this outer ring contained the pollen which fertilized the inner female florets. They then turn downwards after they complete the pollination. This was news to me, but has this explanation some merit??
