Insect and Spider Identification: What beetle is this, brown hard shell

Dinu Mysore India (Zone 10a) November 17, 2012 8:38 AM Post #9335439	I see these in my yard every now and then. It walks in jerky movements. It plays dead too when it senses danger. What is this insect? Locally, of course in slang, we call it as 'buffalo insect' for its tough and unattractive body. Click an image for an enlarged view.
