Flagstaff, AZ

Can some lead me in the direction of this plant's ID from the Mojave desert east of Joshua Tree National Park? It appears to be in a dried out hibernation state, but i can't remember seeing one "alive" though a feeling of purple flowers seems reminiscent. Sometimes they are in little communities of up to a dozen, maybe reproducing as clones underground like the mojave yucca? It's anywhere from 4 to 12inches high and inch across at the fattest part of the "flower". For now it I will just go on calling them Dr. Suess plants haha. Thanks everybody for you help, I am more of a reptile/amphibian guy so if any of yall have questions about some of you're local scaly friends i'd be glad to try and help.
