Wondering the species of this shrub in my backyard in Rhode Island (Northeast USA). And are the berries poisonous? Just took these pics today (it's been a mild December).
My limited knowledge led me to believe this is possible a species of Ligustrum. If that is trues, the fruits or berries are produced during this time of the year.
I have a slight idea that you edited your photo by adjusting the color saturation or color boost in iphoto?
It does look like a Ligustrum... maybe L. vulgare. The foliage turns a purple/bronze color after exposure to cold weather. BTW all Ligustrum spp. are considered toxic so don't eat the berries.

No, I didn't change the color levels at all, I simply normalized the brightness/contrast ("Auto Levels" in Photoshop). It really does look that purple in real life.

Indeed, I wasn't planning on it, was just curious. After Googling it seems that birds do eat them (particularly thrushes) . I'd say we have the genus solved, so thanks for that all. I'll take more pics in spring/summer and maybe we can pinpoint the species. Thanks for the help.
