AHS JOURNAL

Hazel Crest, IL(Zone 5a)

New arrival yesterday. Am I the only one detecting a strong odor from the journal and the inserts. I am guessing that it is the ink that's off gassing. Mike

Anxiously awaiting for mine to arrive!!!!

San Jose, CA

I noticed the odor too, very strong. Have never noticed it before when opening a new D. journal. But now it is no longer noticeable.

Rio Rancho, NM(Zone 7b)

Yes, I wondered about that too. Had no idea what it is.

I have seen one or two over the years only I am not a member, I might one of these days though. Even read one or two online .. I would have get more experience to understand some of it. Only most I can and do,, enjoy ....

Rio Rancho, NM(Zone 7b)

I think it might have to do with the colored ink. Although I can't even flip the pages on a Macy's or Dillard's advertisement when they are trying to get people to buy their colognes and perfumes. The whole paper just reeks of the smells. I start coughing and my eyes water then it gives me a headache, so when I see them I just throw them away.

Gassing off could be the cause of the odor on those shiny colored ink pages in the AHS journal though. God only knows what they use in those inks now.

I like the article on prolifs by Mr. Dan Trimmer. "Bobbin On The Robin" always have some good info.

Gainesville, FL(Zone 9a)

I love the journals. Got mine last week, and thought it smelled akin to paint. No mattter, I have all of mine and refer to them fairly often. I think they do a great job. Its the only magazine I dont tear apart to keep what I want and pitch the rest. You never know what you might want to come back and refer to. I think the pictures are great as well.

My Journal arrived today and did have a definite ordor from the ink when first opened now it no longer has a scent , it could be because my DH cooked something in his usual way on high and now that is all that I can smell. LOL Just took a quick peek at the journal it looks very impressive can't wait to start reading the pictures are great as always....Betty

Finally got mine and it did smell pretty bad.

Hazel Crest, IL(Zone 5a)

Cindy it will wear off now that you have taken it out of the plastic.

Melvindale, MI(Zone 5a)

Yes, I think it already has Mike, which is good!!!

Poland, ME

Still worth every penny of AHS membership dues even if the ink needs to dry out first!

Gainesville, FL(Zone 9a)

I couldnt agree more.

I got my catalog from Dan Hansen yesterday, it smelled the same. no biggie, as it too will go away.

Got this in the mail a couple days ago. That odor is still there! Read some of the articles last night. So far, I like Mike's piece on Mr Sobek and the one about Heidi and Charles.

I got mine about a week ago. I just love these journals. I read the article as well, and I love Heidi's seedlings. They are SO up my alley.
I also enjoyed the Reinke's talking about the begining of registering poly's. Also, the little heads up on leaf miners, Ive seen the damage and thought it was thrips. As far as the favorites, I sure wish people would start picking something but the smae ole same ole as there favorites. I mean, primal scream, strawberry candy, and the others are nice daylilies, but surely people must have something else they like.
Great great pictures as always.

Melvindale, MI(Zone 5a)

Got mine too and I noticed an odor also. I think it fades with time though. Haven't had a chance to read any articles yet but will certainly do that.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Love, love, love the Journal! I don't remember if I noticed a smell or not. I read just about every article. Just love all the colorful pics and even the ads.

As far as favorites are concerned, they need more people to participate in nominating their faves. That way different ones will have a chance to be picked.

Karen, I voted on something last year because I got a link or an email. But how can I be sure about when and how to do this? (nominating)

Hazel Crest, IL(Zone 5a)

Susan, the "popularity Poll" is usually around September. The time frame will probably be listed in your next AHS Journal. It will also be posted on the website.

Karen, you are welcome.

Franklin, WI(Zone 5a)

I'll have to check mine! When't the spring issue come out? Thanks

Portsmouth, VA(Zone 8a)

Thanks Mike! I have them bookmarked already and I just don't do as much reading as I should. I will check in more often.

Another question I have is when you join the AHS, they say they will give you a voucher but I still have not gotten one. When do they send them out, like I need another reason to buy daylilies?

susan

Hazel Crest, IL(Zone 5a)

Susan they usually send it out with your first package. You should email the proper dept to find out if they forgot to mail it to you. I used mine at Brown's Ferry Gardens a couple years ago because they double the value if you spend over a certain amount. AHS will send you a list of those that honor the vouchers. There are others that offer similar or other incentives.

Portsmouth, VA(Zone 8a)

Yes I did get a voucher from the Hosta Society and a list. But nothing from the Daylily Society. My first Journal was last year because I joined in September and paid for a partial year and a full year. So they sent nothing either time. I will email them.
