Good idea, but it has a problem. The drainage layer at the bottom is a myth - it does not work as expected. See for an explanation:

The design would be better if the center compost area only went down half the depth of the garden. More water and nutrients would stay in the garden soil.

The article was based on the experience of others and their continued use suggests the design works, regardless of any criticism one might have. Dave's Garden is a very sharing place so I welcome you to build a keyhole garden to see if it works for your purposes, tinker with the design elements, then post your personal experience. We would all appreciate your design improvement suggestions!
