If you have wood lice, (sowbugs, pillbugs, etc) you may encounter the The Woodlouse Hunter spider resting in your compost. Dysdera crocata feeds exclusively on wood lice and likely came to this country with its prey in pots of plants, ship's ballast etc. long ago. This spider is light brown with reddish tint to the front and legs and has large mandibles, and will bite if threatened. But it does keep the woodlice population under control and I personally consider it a good guy in the garden. It hunts at night and during the day hides under rocks or logs with its prey. If you run across them in your compost, they can be easily shooed away to hide. http://ento.psu.edu/extension/factsheets/woodlouse-hunter
