As promised, I am going Host a Valentine Exchange.

It is going to have a theme of sorts which will allow you some leeway .

The Theme is

1. "HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS"

This is who I have so far. If you signed up and your name isn't on the list just holler at me, but not too loud please. Heheh

Now you can use that to you own interpretation
Your valentines can be stitched, painted, presented as a card, made as a doll, or any way you which to make your valentine.

One rule is, They must all be Hand Made. No exceptions this time. You of course may purchase your materials and decorate with purchased items but the Valentine itself must be hand made.

Sign up begins today and ends on the 15th of January. All Valentines must be mailed NO LATER then the 11th of February. You may want to check with your PO to make sure that the Valentine will arrive in time for Valentines Day.

The Value should be equal to in respect to each other so I am placing a $20 value. That could be considered time and materials but not postage.
Here are a few ideas
These are just something to stir the brain waves it hopes that the love starts to flow. hehehe

Please don't miss out on this fun Valentine Exchange.

Come on all you sewers and quilters that said they want to be a part of i, here is a chance for you to shine.

Oh my, I am so sorry, It never occurred to me that I should explain what was shown and not just show pictures. I do apologize, I have shown pictures of a purse that I
made using the penny rug method with a big heart on it , I also posted a picture of a runner that I had made using Punch needle method that has a home within a black bird with trees and then lettering that reads " Home is where The , and then a large of a heart, then more lettering IS" I have never tried to describe this so it is sort of a test for me too. I have also shown a box with some Valentine cookies, There is also a Picture of little mug mats that have a heart on them. They are made of felt and have the hearts appliqued on them. Anything hand made is okay. I don't know to what extent your blindness keeps you from doing things but any stitching or baking or anything that you can create is acceptable. I really don't want to put any limitations on this for you specifically if you are capable of doing these things. You have really stumped me and I have to say that it has been a challenge to explain some of these things. Also, have you always been blind? What I mean is that I am assuming that you know what a heart is shaped like and basically what a Valentine is like.
I am sorry if I sound stupid or dumbfounded but I guess the question just sort of threw me for a loop. I just never gave it any thought on describing something like that. Please forgive me. Please feel free to Dmail me any further questions you may have or post them here. I will try and be what ever help I can be.

Hi, Gourdbeader.
Not a problem :) Your descriptions of the pictures are very helpful :) The things you've made sound lovely :) Thanks for describing them. It gives me some ideas of things I might do.
Yes, I was born blind. I do baking and crocheting, and some other crafts.
This sounds like it could be a lot of fun. However, I think I shouldn't commit to doing this yet. Just getting my energy back after being sick over the holidays. But I'll be thinking of ideas for things I might want to do, and will let you know if I decide to sign up :)

Gourdbeader, did you make valentine boxes in grade school? I so loved to do that and then going to the store and buying a set of cards to hand out, course I never got to get the big fancy fold out ones...rofl, but it was fun just the same.

Worst Valentines day... probably 2nd grade, the day before our party I got deathly sick but I wouldn't tell anyone because I didn't want them to keep me home the day of the party, well the teacher noticed me turning redder and redder and she sent me to the nurse, that immediately ended up at the doctor and I had scarletina a milder form of scarlet fever...rofl. I was so upset about missing the party...rofl.

What's your best or worst valentines day? rofl.

I remember those Valentines Boxes in grade school and all the excitement they caused for several days beforehand. I was always afraid that getting an elephant or hippo or something like that on the valentine meant the sender thought you were fat. I didn't want to think that, but couldn't help it. Don't know why I started thinking that. I was always very careful of who I sent what valentine to. Gosh! Them was tough times.
Now I do not care who thinks I am fat or not.

Also, if you're sending foods, a couple of things to avoid: Please no hot spices (love spices, just not hot ones like the hot chili kind). Also, love cinnamon, but not the Red Hots candy.
And, I love chocolate, but not the liqueur-filled chocolates. (I don't drink alcoholic beverages, so I'm not a big fan of these.)

And I will admit to all of you I have no "class" at all, I am not a fan of 'high' class chocolates, I know or have heard I am suppose to like chocolate with high percent of something but I am just a plain old fashioned girl...Russel Stovers is about as classy as I get. Chocloate with nuts or coconuts...omg...is it too early for candy? rofl.

Do your "others" get you roses on Valentines Day? Once one of the baby girls in the office was surprised that I didn't get roses and I explained I surely hope I never do because it would be quite expensive because I would have to hire a private dectective...rofl. Don't get me wrong I love roses but gosh they are too expensive and die, I would much rather have the whole bush...rofl.

Coming along nicely here also!! IF i would stop changing my mind and adding things!!!!

As far as roses for valentines day, I totally agree with you Happ---while cut flowers are beautiful---I also would much rather have the "whole" rose bush to plant in the ground or even a package of bulbs!!!!
Finally , after all these years, got my hubby to go along with that!!! Still get the occasional "cut bouquet" but that's o.k. -- especially when we go for our "nature" walks and he wanders off and comes back with a bouquet of wild flowers/weeds for me---JUST BEAUTIFUL & SO SWEET!!!! LOVE IT!!!!

This may sound a little bit out of line but I have a very special request.

My dearest friend as you have read is dying of Ovarian Cancer. I would love to show her that there are others that care about her other then just me.

Is there any way that any or all of you could also send a little valentine card that I could pass on to her for Valentines day.
If you are willing and would be interested in doing this for me and for my fiend Linda I would be for ever grateful.
You could send them to me and I will give them all to her.

I may be way out of line asking this but I just want her to know that she has others that care and understand her plight. Valentines is a day of caring and sharing.
Thanks everyone,

I just spoke with my dear friend this morning and she has made the choice to stop all further chemo and treatments. It is hard to know how to deal with this, but I will try and support her in her choice and just be the best friend I can be. I just hope that this isn't too hard on her or her daughter. I want to just not make it difficult for her but yet I don't want her to die either.

You got it Jan! Will pick up a card and get it out to you asap to be sure it reaches you by valentines day. So sorry to hear about your friend--it is a rough thing to go through. We lost our Dad to cancer and I have a sister & a cousin that are fighting breast cancer. Some days are not easy but you just have to take it day by day and hope and pray for the best outcome possible in each situation. Thank goodness Linda has such a great friend as you on her side to help her through this! Prayers go out to you both. Take care. Shirley

Oh I love those stories, those are so great, a special vase for those lovely yellow flowers! OMG the thought of picking you a flower bouqet that is too cool and the picture is worth a million...talk about cherish.

A million years ago when DH and I first got married, we rented an outbuilding.
To get to this outbuilding you had to drive thru a cemetery, down a bluff which passed by a pond, then by a dump, and finally making it all the way down the bluff into the river bottoms... (Just a note the pond was beautiful always crystal clear and about 1/2 way down the bluff, peacefully looking out over the river bottoms and the Missouri river just an unbelivable spot. Strangest thing tho no one ever fished in it. I finally asked DH why, he took me back up the bluff by the pond and pointed up and said look, when you looked back up the bluff from the pond you saw the cemetery...the thought of where that water might of came from. was stronger than any of these guys...rofl)
Anyway one year in later part of June DH brings home these flowers in pots that look like that hadn't been watered in weeks...I knew something was odd, well seems the cemetery workers pulled all the flowers off after Memorial Day and threw them in the dump. DH saw some of the pots, wades out into the dump and comes bringing me these flowers that were barely hanging on...rofl. What is that saying It's the thought that counts...LOL

So awesome Barb--handpicked flowers & weeds from the grandkids are the BEST!!!! Their beautiful weeds mean everything to them when they pick them for Grandma (& Grandpa also-my granddaughter picks flowers for Grandpa all the time) . The proud look on their happy little faces as they give them to you is just so adorable!!

And Happ--Those pics are from one of our nature walks -- he wandered off and I just happened to have the camera that day and was on a bridge up above him and took the pic of him without him knowing it!!!!

Did you grow out any of the pots of flowers your DH brought you that day to see what they were??? Strange place to get them from yes, but, yep it is the thought that counts!!! And it's kinda nice to know that they got a "second chance" to grow again thanks to your DH rescuing them from the dump!!!!

sbish - oh that makes the picture even that more precious to say the least. Just to see someone thinking of you in the act with such thought.

As a matter a fact if memory serves me right most of those plants from the dump did make it and what were gone still gave me a pot for starting something else. True recycling...rofl.

Hi, all.
Jan, I'm happy to get a card for Linda, too. Will pick one up this coming week. And I'll be keeping you, Linda, and her daughter in my prayers. This is certainly a difficult time for all of you.
Oh, and Everyone, remember that Monday is a holiday, Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday.
I pretty much know what I'm going to do for my Valentine, but will have to work on it a bit closer to mailing time :) Well, except perhaps one thing, but I haven't had a chance to work on that yet. Hopefully soon!
Well, my husband doesn't get me flowers very often, so it's quite special when he does. I love having them, whether they come as a flowering plant or as a bouquet :)
Have a great weekend, everyone!

We have a 110 lb chocolate lab and a black & white cat (long hair) that we rescued from the pound for my son for Christmas two years ago , and you want to talk about animal hair????? WOW , even with brushing them, when you have hard wood floors it is awful!!! Such is the life when you LOVE your animals!!!! You put up with lots & do anything for them just like your kids!!!!

Got part of my valentine gift completed and still working on more!! Need to stop adding to it!!!

Thunder, Lightening, &Rain & Snow mixed early this morning/middle of the night!!!!! Wow!! Hubby took son to work at 3 a.m. and said some of the roads are quite slippery! Yuck--thank goodness spring will soon be here!!!

Sbish5, I have your matching lab, Sam...rof. Is your black? Someone dumped him, he weighs 120lbs. We tried to put him on calorie restrictions but then he started eating wild animals so we stopped that...geehz. Talk about a sweetie but makes sure no one enters without us knowing. We also have a basset hound named Slick, and wire terrier from the pound Shortie, currently 3 cats, my Moms cat who is about 90, my sisters cat, and my black cat...13 trained pet chickens, 6 pet ducks, and fish in a water garden...can you tell I live out of the city...rofl. Yeap bassets shed like crazy, a million years ago use to have a st. bernard and I really think her hair was better than the basset hound.. Sounds like we have a big group of animal lovers.

Wow Happ!! Sounds like my house a few years back!! We literally had a "mini" zoo with snakes, lizards, hedgehogs, hermit crabs, chinchillas, rabbits, dogs, cats, birds, turtles, fish, and everything inbetween!! But with 5 kids(1 girl and 4 boys) all loving animals what can I say!!! When our youngest son was in preschool his class actually went on a walking field trip(we lived 3 blocks from school) to come to our house to see all the animals!!! But no more--we now only have the dog(pic below is her and our oldest granddaughter laying under the pine tree looking for BATS!) and the cat(pic below is her "chillin" in one of her favorite spots )!!!

And, for the Valentine exchange--as far as chocolate goes--ANYTHING goes--with me , hubby, and 3 boys left in the house what one doesn't like the other does!!! And I suppose I have to share RIGHT????

My mom had breast cancer twice, 20 years apart. That is not what killed her, diabetes indirectly ended her life. Complications from poor circulation. A lot would depend on my age, the type of cancer and LOTS of other factors. I just know I WILL BE THE ONE making the decision regarding my life and treatment, NOT my doctor. There came a time when we prayed for QUALITY of life, not quantity for my Mom. It was absolutely heart wrenching for my Dad.

Sorry... . On to cheerier subjects. I'm getting more done on the valentine (s) today. Anybody else agonize over silly details? At least I know "No nuts!" LOL THATís a good thing to know or she might have gotten some of my Mom HOT spiced almonds, oh my!!! YUMMY but not for the faint of heart!

Ok, now I have to add my small crew. Five cats, Rosie, Zena, Trip, Chippy and Ralph. All the photos are on another computer so I can't show you the little darlings. I have had much loved dogs, horses, a milk cow and assorted calves, rabbits, chickens, pigs, and when I was little, guinea pigs, and I nearly forgot, a hamster. But I have always had a cat. At one time through a set of weird happenings, I had 19 cats and kittens... They just seem to find me! What can I say?! And, always, when they are old enough they are spayed or neutered. Little Ralph is sceduled for the 1st of Feb. I do miss having a dog. but my place is not fenced (4 1/2 acres) and I can't bear to chain a dog. Maybe I should consider a small dog.

OMG, Taters, you have a list. I hate lists. My EX husband used to leave me lists of what he expected to be done each day by me and my daughters. To this day I hate lists and I subconsciously forget to take them with me when I go to the market.
That is one reason he is an EX. I put him at the top of the list and ran a line through it and that meant DONE !!!
heheheh

HAPPY VALENTINES DAY TO ME!! My valentines box arrived today--was going to wait till Valentines Day to open it but couldn't wait that long!!! So let the list of goodies begin!!!!

A book on annuals and bulbs
2 fine gardening magazines
Some homemade Quince paste (and the receipe to make it)(says to eat with crackers & cheese)
A jar of homemade Quince jelly
A jar of homemade Pineapple jam
A container of mints--homemade????
A heart shaped tin with homemade fudge(2 kinds)
A paper chain garland made out of heart shapes
5 homemade magnets (flowers)

Have never had quince anything before so this was a new thing for us. But I like it!
Now I have something new to read before I go to bed tonight!!
The fudge is absolutely DELICIOUS!!! (Have to share with the boys of course!)And the tin that it is in is beautiful!!
The heart shaped garland is made from flower catalogs so the hearts are covered with flowers!! Love it!!
Absolutely love the little flower magnets!! What a cool idea!! (Gives me an idea for my sister that loves magnets--going to do some with pics of her dog on them for her!!)

What a GREAT valentines box to receive!! Love everything!!

And, strange how things work out---the person that sent me my valentines box is the person that I sent my secret santa(another exchange) box to!!

THANK YOU to Crystal!!

Hello everyone!! How are we all doing on getting our Valentines done??? I am not finished yet but steadily working on it!!
Probably should have waited till closer to Valentines Day to open my wonderful box from Crystal--pralines and fudge is all but gone--our boys absolutely loved it!! Have been switching back and forth between the pineapple jam and the quince jelly on my toast in the morning with a cup of hot tea--quite tasty!! Our youngest son put my little magnets on the front door where everyone going out can see them and we have gotten several nice comments on them!! Found some very informative information on peonies in one of the magazines(haven't had time to look at the other mag or book yet)!

Warmer out today--some snow last night which turned to rain(light drizzle right now). Got to turn the heat DOWN some today!! Consumers Energy is going to be rich off us this past month--REALLY SCARY to even think about that bill that is coming!!

Have a great day everyone!!

Well I also have been working on my box, and I have a question, the way I read the swap is that our 'main' valentine has to be handmade, but not everything has to be handmade...correct? We can buy somethings?

it is going to hit almost 70 here today, it is just nuts, no other word for it and then single digits by Friday of course. Wack oh. I sat out at lunch without a coat eating lunch at a sidewalk cafe...it felt so good. Should be my day to leave on time, but I am here by myself so that isn't going to happen. Really makes me sad... Did anyone hit those 30 below zero temps? Can't imagine what kind of problems those would cause us. I would have a garage full of chickens and ducks...rofl along with a propane bill to choke the national debt!

Can't believe Jan is almost over...time is flying.

YUM!!! See? Even Jalouse gives her nod of approval! Thanks again Linda, a beautiful Valentine card as well.

Just keep up the prayers and much needed support (the littlest things can mean so much at a time like this) and try to keep up your spirits!!! Take care!!!

Jan, my friend in San Antonio had stage 3 uterine cancer. She had a total hysterectomy, then went through 6 months of chemo, and she is doing fine now. Her hair is finally coming back in. She said the worse part are the shots she has to go in for the day after her chemo. She said they made her bones hurt so bad. So they told her to take a claritin tablet everyday, and that helped a lot. If you are close, she will need someone with her for support on the days she gets her treatments, and a ride to and from the place.

I believe the best peace of mind comes from enjoying every moment in whatever way we can. Who has warm temp? I wanna go there! Now! Snow on the ground, cloudy (only good thing about that is dust doesnt show...rofl) geehz it is horrible cold. working on my buds package, it has been kind of tough for me.

Having an outbreak of stupid spider mites. good grief. What a pain. I have my Moms cat, and my sisters cat, and my cat all in garden room so I am really having a tough time this winter keeping things going. Plus water is limited because it has been so cold so I can't drag things out and spray them.

Eww... spidermites??? where did those come from? I saw a pic the other day of a wolf spider with babies all over its back. Made me squirm just to look at it. Do they come in because of the warmth or what. So sorry for your bad luck.

Well as far as I can tell if you have brugmansias and/or elephant ears which I have all of the above you will end up with spidermites. My nts are in a solar room so it gets really hot and of course the colder outside the less humidty there is. I did try to put extra humidity inthe room by putting about 30 gal tub in there with water plants but that didn't work.

Look at this site, it might be worth a try?

http://www.rollitup.org/indoor-growing/226384-home-made-spider-mite-spray.html

A cpl weeks ago I had a severe infestation of the dreaded "SPIDER MITES" in my indoor flower room. I first tried an alcohol/water mix but with limited success. Then I went to my hydro store and my man there suggested Fox Farms spray called "Don't Bug Me". He said its a natural spray with no petrol chemicals as the active ingredient and the shit will break down after a cpl of days and become inert and harmless. I bought a 24 oz bottle for 16 bucks and tried it. The shit worked great but didn't last long because I had 80 plus plants to spray.

Well as it would happen, the day before I washed my 2 taco bell dogs and dipped them in some flea and tick dip. Since the instruction said I could let it dry on them I read the ingredients and wouldn't you know it, it had the same active ingredient as the Don't Bug Me (pyrethrum) but in a slightly higher concentration. I did the math and mixed up a solution comparable to the don't bug me and literally drenched my plants on the tops and bottoms with my homemade spray. That was two weeks ago and as of today, NO SPIDER MITES and the girls are doing well with no loss of any plants. Here are some picks of the girls I took yesterday. They look thin because I trimmed as close as possible to the flowers as I could to get as many mites and eggs off before I sprayed. I was gonna trim them anyway because I lolly pop my plants...take a look...

Oh a side note, since the dip is concentrated the cost per gallon of homemade spray is about $1.00 per gallon. Good for outdoor growers who might need a lot of spray .

Good job Linda!!! I knew you were one Smart Cookie!!!

I'm getting so excited about Spring. This will be the "year" that I get something "done" in my flowerbeds. I just know it! I'm going to give my Sweetie a list of plants he can buy me for "holidays" and I'm going to treat myself to plant or two "in honor" of my kid's birthday. My gift to me for raising those guys! LOL

I"m a bit of a miser and we have so many medical bills that I have a tendency to talk myself out of my expendures that are "frivolous" but I'm thinking that maybe I NEED to give myself permission to spend a little for retail therapy. Just looking out my window and seeing the areas that the sod was removed this LATE fall is giving me so much excitement.

Anybody got PINK poppy seeds??? Red... or White?? I could spread them in a few in waves across the fresh bare ground. Won't that be pretty this year?

TA TA TA...beautiful pictures coming your way! Guys please notice the workmanship...
1. picture is the package when I opened the box. Pretty in itself.
Well shoot I forgot to put the candy in there, that is because I had already taken a piece, it is the biggest chocolate candy I have ever seen, plus some great taffy, which I have in my valentine bowl on the dining room table now.
2. picture is with everything opened up! Please ignore the stuff in the background...the house is a pouch and opens at the top, it actually has a flip top! The round disk have wonderful smelly stuff in them. There are two really cute tiny hearts that were on top of the package. Then the big box of chocolate and taffy, some flavored coffee and tea for a cold night in February! Then hanging is the coolest swag for my fireplace. I took close up shots so you can see the detail.
3. pictue is the pouch with the flip top under the scallops, look at the detail, the smoke is even tiny little hearts!
4. picture of the rounds and all those dots are little beads sewn on, and what ever is inside smells wonderful.
5. picture is of the tiny little hearts on a string, I just love everything.

I am thinking I am going to have to send mine out in two shipments. I have some ready, some not. second part is taking longer than I thought. Had a colonoscopy yesterday and it wiped me right out!!! don't know if I will get much done today. :( still feeling groggy. thought I would get finished day before yesterday, but I spent much of the day in the bathroom :( too much information?? sorry :(

but I am pleased to report that I am very healthy in that dept.!!! was weighing heavy on my mind. recently found out that my biological father died of colon cancer. and my Dr had been bugging me for a few years now, to get one. And my older brother has had some colon problems. * big sigh* sure glad to be done with it, and know I am healthy in that area at least :)

Yes I think that is good idea! gonna go pack it up right now and get hubs to bring it to PO...

yes first one. was not covered by ins. so I had been telling the Dr no. well now covered, and finding out about my father...figured I best do it.
that stuff made me think of alka seltzer :( was indeed hard to swallow.
I did not eat anything for two days, and my biggest problem was...I got very weak. the morning of procedure, when I got up and went into the bathroom, I was so weak, I fell. nothing major happened thank goodness. but I am still achy all over. I sorta crashed into the tile wall, and slid down onto the floor.
could have been much worse. yup could have been very bad...

Well, this week has proved to be quite a busy week... and this was when I was going to be working on getting my box together for my buddy. And, of course, the weekend is busy, too... I'm hoping to get my box out first thing Monday morning so it can get to my buddy by Valentine's. But there's a possibility that it may need to go out Tuesday morning. Going to try for Monday though!
