When I was in my first apartment 1,000,000 years ago, I had a number of houseplants. One was growing in water. I knew it needed more than just water to survive but I didn't know what else to add. So I added table sugar. Yuck! Within a few days it smelled like someone had puked in there!!! I forgot all about that until this second, but that was probably bacterial growth.
