I believe that the manzanita is used for great parrot/bird perches. Ask me how I know!
I'm owned by 4 parrots (3 are certified Hospice Pet Therapy). The wood is very hard, and safe for birdies with big beaks to pick on. Also, the unusual shapes are great for exercising their feet because they are real branches from the tree! Just hope this is not an endangered tree as the perches extremely popular for bird people like me :-)
Some manzanitas are very common. This is just a guess, but it is possible that they are salvage from logging operations, since some manzanitas live in forests.
