    This hedge is 15' tall, running 40' long on the west boundry line. It is hidden behind the maple trees. I hope to halve its' height this summer by lopping. Sure is lovely while in bloom.

    Chinese Privet Ligustrum lucidum.

    Like all privets, an invasive weed shrub in your area, so you might want to think about removing 100%, not just 50%

    If you want get rid of it, feel free to do so. It's just a generic sort of green shrub and there are better alternatives. However, having lived in NC for many years, the only Ligustrum I've observed to be really invasive (growth significantly displacing native plants) is L. sinense. L. lucidum and L. japonicum do sometimes escape but usually only near areas where they were formerly planted such as abandoned homes, etc.
