agree on water, I put a dead branch over heated water and the birds love to sit on it and drink, also would recommend to forget "cutesy" when buying feeders, etc. birds dont care about fancy colors, material, etc. much easier to clean and more natural the better, use only natural wood, wire, and metal as this prevents squirrel damage. I melt my suet in stainless pan in oven (watching carefully) and add the peanut butter, small amt. coarse cornmeal , sunflower hearts and dried fruit. , stuff pine cones, hollow logs, and nooks and crannies outside for fun watching. enjoy other watchers ideas, thanks! It is eleven below this AM and have about 8 birds sitting on the branches over water. Hint: old dry corn tortillas can be torn up and thrown out...the birds and squirrels go crazy scooting off with them.

My cats prevent me from needing to do any extra work for the birds. I'd just be luring them to their demise. I do keep the hummingbirds safe though ... Which would be an entirely different article. (;
