A little birdie told me the previous thread http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1287396/ was getting a tad long with our great DG family posting continued words of support to our Becky!! So let's continue that support as she prepares for her great adventure...

Where the perfumed south-wind whispers,
Thy magnolia groves among,
Softer than a mother's kisses,
Sweeter than a mother's song,
Where the golden jasmine trailing,
Woos the treasure-laden bee,
Alabama, Alabama, we will aye be true to thee!

Chantell, very pretty verse.

I was thinking that Bec will be able to grow more tender plants than we can in this area, but then I looked up USDA zones for AL - it ranges from 7a to 9a. Huntsville in in the northern part of the state and is zone 7a, so pretty much the same gardening conditons as northern VA. Well that part will be familiar LOL.

Also looked up general distance - about 670 miles from Leesburg to Huntsville, straight south west, average time is 10 hrs 45 minutes.

Go, Becky, Go!! The zone may be similar, but I'm thinking you'll have a little less freeze thaw freeze thaw freeze thaw, so rosemary, lavender, etc. should overwinter better.

This year's big adventure sounds way more fun than the one you started last year. Praying & cheering you both on!

Oh no, I just realized you are moving to the home of the dreaded Crimson Tide. They proved all those awful sports analysts right and put a whoopin on my beloved Notre Dame. On to more pleasant thoughts, how about an Alabama Slammer to go along with that moonshine LOL.

1/2 oz amaretto almond liqueur
1/2 oz Southern Comfort® peach liqueur
1/2 oz sloe gin
1 splash orange juice
1 splash sweet and sour mix
Pour above ingredients into a stainless steel shaker over ice and shake until completely cold. Strain into an old-fashioned glass and serve.

Glad to hear your doing well Bec. I live to close to Hershey. Can you smell the chocolate? Unfortunately the only thing we get a whiff of are the paper plants. :-{ Two things I wanted to taste when we were in Europe, their beers and their chocolate. I can forgive some of their beers, but I can't forget their chocolate. OMG at least we are now producing some good chocolate stateside. I absolutely love many of the dark chocolates now produced stateside. Around 60-70% cacao trips my trigger. Wish I could get some leaf for when I'm busy. LOL Seattle, had one of the best, but at the moment the name escapes me. Midnight "something". If I get to chose the way I go, I want death by chocolate. "Sweet things are made of these- Ric

Bec, we have not been in touch before but Chantell is a DG fragrant friend of mine and that is how I found you. It has been a journey I am sure you will never forget but you will find as the years go by, it has made you smarter and stronger, mentally and physically. When my son was just 20 years old and at USC with a full schedule, we went through all of the things you have just completed, plus some extras and today he is a very happy, healthy person.

This journey with you has brought back many memories for me, and as you know some are not so good but in the end, the results are worth it. I want to wish you well and tell you I hope your move gives you much happiness. This old lady is here if you ever need a new plant ( no charge) or just want to chat.

Hi to All - I don't have the time at the moment to read this thread, but marked it to watch, so will catch up with the previous posts at some point soon hopefully. Anyway...Alabama bound...sounds good to me. I have only traveled that direction once, but had a really great time. Everything there such as in nature is so different from what I used to in the mountains of Virginia. I was amazed with the spanish moss on the trees and love the style of architecture of the homes in the south. My gosh...an added bonus of warm winter weather, can't ask for better than that.

Anyway...will catch up with you good folks soon.

Came back from Reed a few hrs ago, ultrasound was inconclusive (as expected) - soooo, MRI next week (why not, it's the only imaging tool they haven't used so far) - there are 2 tiny areas of concern, could be a bump, a cyst, could be scar tissue - could be a multitude of things - but, instead of wait and keep an eye on it, operating table it is! PET showed 'minute cell activity' - what kind is of course impossible to say - they'll get rid of a tiny bump, check the lymphnodes and my wonderful MIL is coming up for a week to stay with me! :) Since I'm such an "odd case" they don't want to leave anything up to chance and surgery seems the logical thing to do - told him I'd better end up in a medical journal after all of this!!!

Thorough is good, and I'm all for getting rid of a "bump," however minute. I'd rather know it's benign than guess. Still, I'm sure you must be rolling your eyes and thinking, "Seriously? SERIOUSLY??"

Came through surgery with no issues, I'm sore as all get out, but - it's done! They are keeping me overnight & I'm really happy they did - it's a decent room, nice roommate & you even get a menu to order your food from! Won't know results until next week, but - he doubts it's cancerous since I just finished chemo 6 weeks ago...he removed 2 glands & 1 lymph node

Can't help wishing that you could come to the Spring Swap...You were host to the swap when I first came round Daves and all the excitement and activity and sharing and people has kept me coming back. When you settle in Alabama, come Spring Swap time maybe we can have the world's longest plant swap from north Northeast to south Southeast! Anyhow, it will be nice to have some of your lovely plants at the swap and replanted in our ever widening circle of gardens.

I SO wish I could be there as well, but, I'll b busy unpacking for quite a while after I get there and we're moved in to new house :) We close here on the 3rd, head to Bama and close on new house there on the 6th - I'll have a HUGE area (0.3 acres) to garden in, not sure I'll know what to do with all that space!!!

Still don't have results from pathology, hoping for tomorrow or Friday, doc is pushing as hard as he can to get them, I hate waiting and waiting for these kinds of results is about driving me insane - regardless of outcome I'll be ready for whatever; I've been scanned, radiated, ultrasounded, operated on - there can't be much else to do! I'm already transferred to UAB for continued treatments, they are one of the best onc/gyn departments in the country, so I'll be well looked after :)

I'm exited too - Greg loves it already - his 7 minute commute, the decompressed feeling...he says people are very friendly, but not overly so - everything is new and developing - of course if you drive 15 mins outside of town, it's hicksville - but, it is here as well - I know I'm definitely heading south, when the shower guy called about shelving and he managed to call me Ms. Becky at least 5 times in the conversation...and that was all I understood!!! :-)

Are treatment like a course of antibotics in that once you start they are continuous until finished, with no skipping?

What an amazing house you will have! Looks cavernous---so much space and so pretty...

I love stone houses--and yours' stone front is amazing...How did you find this gem?
Who is doing all the building and painting?

Your yard is like a blank slate---You will have so much room to turn it in your own special gardens...
And--many of us will be happy to send you seeds and starts and bulbs and roots to make this happen...

I wish you a safe transfer--and many loving hours spent in your new house. Take care of yourself...
Best to you with all the treatments to come too. I know you will come through it in spades.

Thanks everyone - I found it online, Greg went and looked at it and we decided to go for it - prices in AL are ridiculously low compared to here, we got SO much custom stuff done included for a little bit extra - Greg flies up here on the 3rd, we leave on the 4th and arrive the 5th - close on the house on the 6th and off we go - I picked all the colors and extra stuff, like the fridge, the fence, the built in lanai...the front has little to no area to plant, but the back!!! OMG, what fun I will have (health allowing)! I will be planting trees for shade this year, thinking Magnolias (allowed by HOA) - the grass is Bermuda, like they use everywhere in FL, and there is a sprinkler system :) I'll probably also order quite a few vines to plant along the back of the house, I read the HOA covenants and they 'claim' not to be too difficult with plants, just 'major' landscaping will need permissions...so I'll be a good girl and ask what I can and cannot do :)

Becky--

I just looked at all your pictures again--and am still impressed beyond words...
LOVE, LOVE all the stone work!!!

I have a couple of questions---hope I haven't missed the info if you posted it already...

--Did you buy this house as "New--under construction--unfinished" and it is now being finished by the builder--
Or--was it finished--but all the interior work was what was NOT finished--and it is now being done
as you wish it to be--design-wise. I love all the touches...the scroll work in the doors and windows--
the moldings at the ceiling---all those little touches that is just YOU.

--And a silly question---those little, lit alcoves in the main entryway(?)--what will you put in there?
I would imagine it would have to be something VERY treasured and beautiful---or very meaningful.
Or--a vase of fresh flowers from your garden--when you have one...

I can imagine all of us will caravan one day and drive down to visit you. How many hours of a drive is it???

Safe travels to you---Gita

Dear Becky - first off I apologize for not keeping up with your reports of the last few months. 2013 has been a crazy one for me and I can't seem to keep up with all that I have going on. Along with other commenters I too am thrilled for your exciting new home. It will be so great to decorate and landscape as you want. That will go a long ways in helping to keep your mind on the positive. I know some years back when faced with health issues if I hadn't had gardening to occupy my mind, I might have lost it...hahaha Anyway...what great fun you have ahead.

Again, that the latest test results aren't what you wanted...you do want to them to help rid of any sort of cell that shouldn't be there, so good that your doctors are being overly careful with you. Yes maam, I do understand how tiring the whole process is and the waiting is sometimes the worst part of the deal. I will rejoice with you the day you can look back and this time and remember it as a time when you were really put to the test and as always you came out the victor. Rooting for you 200%.

I am so very glad that we live in the age we do and we can live many miles apart but still be a part of one another's lives. You along with some others here have most certainly played a major part in my life since I found Dave's Garden while researching vacuum cleaners...of all things. I hate to think of the emptiness that might have been my life before you good people. So many of you are a lot more important to me than you will ever know. I came here and was much like yourself...immediately plagued with several health issues that the group here helped get me through. I am forever indebted to the good friends in this group. Heck, if you Becky decide to host a Mid Atlantic plant swap I would do my best to travel due south to attend. I do hope that there will be future opportunities for you and many of us here to get together...where ever it be.

Much love and good wishes coming to you today.

Thank all :)

Gita - to answer your questions - it was/is a new house under construction (done now) and I had the final say in the paint colors, the lanai, the fence, fridge and a few other things (all in all we asked for about 20K of extra stuff)...I'd venture to say it was nearly done when we found it and fell in love with it - I saw it online, Greg went and took a look and loved it! The little alcoves aren't that little actually...about 3.5' by 3.5 feet and pretty deep - still pondering what to put there, but it'll come to me as we live in it for a while, same with pictures and more decorating - while I have already picked out some light fixtures and carpets already, I need to live in the house and get to "know it" to know what I want to do :)

Becky, I saw a stunning piece of black coral at the Shell Factory yesterday that would look great in an Alcove like that! "Only" $2399, LOL, but I remember thinking at the time that you'd pay more for a good bronze if you had a place (and budget) for one. Put a vase of pussy willow branches or some such in there for now, and you'll find the perfect thing eventually (or the perfect vase for the "bouquet of the week" from your yard-en!).

Ditto what Ruby & Gita said about being willing to travel to Alabama, now that you'll be there!

Heck, for you I might even be willing to get a Facebook account, to keep up with you there. :-)

I like that, Jill!!!

We'll have more than enough room for travelers, so whomever wants to visit us in the south for a few days or just driving through - come on down :) Jill, I'll get right on that piece of coral, sounds like it's stunning and SO in my price range ;) Giggle :)

I'm just about starting on getting ready for the 'big move' - I started some laundry :) I'll be packing enough clothes for a week, my laptop and some bedding/airmattress & the movers can do the rest - I'll just have to trust the moving company won't break or destroy our stuff - I did pack a few breakables, not sure I'll be able to fit the 2 boxes in my trunk tho - I'll have half the backseat for some stuff - my niece is coming over on Thursday to help...she can help me carry and pack in car - I'll be on my neighbors couch the last nite, the house will be totally empty (unless I blow up the mattress) - 'the kids' are having 'a 2 nites sleep-over' at the vets, they'll just be in the way and the kittens will be terrified of the movers - a cleaning crew is coming in on Thursday afternoon and getting it ready to hand over to new owner :)

I picked up some bed linens from Ikea the last time I was there. They were very reasonably priced and I just love them. I've spent a lot more on sheets that weren't near as nice. Oh Beck, I could easily fill those nice nooks of yours. I visited HomeGoods today and they have some really beautiful big things that would set in those spaces of yours for a reasonable price. One was a large waist high fountain pot the kind where the water cascades over and falls into groves cut in the pot.

I know--I "get it" that all you more suburban people think 10 miles is nothing.

However--I have everything in the World close-by here--great are to live in.

Six grocery stores--White Marsh Mall--Ikea--Wallmart--HD--Lowes--a zillion
Restaurants (I do not frequent)--all 3 schools on my street--everything no more than 3-4 miles...
A BIG Hospital complex (Feanklin Square)--all my Dr.s--2 Nurseries--etc...

So--driving 10 miles on I-95 to go shopping seems "far" to me. Not a pleasant drive !
IF I ever go that-a-way--I also hit "Gabriel Brothers"--an el-cheapo junky store...Good $$$.

I can't help but giggle at thinking 10 miles is a long drive - living so close to DC everything is a long drive and with traffic even more so - AL will be a refreshing change, when it's 10 miles, it's 10 minutes drive :) I was driving nearly every week to Bethesda, 40 mile one way - took anything from 45 minutes to 3 hrs :)

Such different perspectives - I'm in the group that travels to work, 60+ miles each way every day, and live out in the country where everything but a corner gas station is 20 minutes away. I often wonder what it would be like to have everything within 10 miles or walking distance - have never experienced it.

I-95 is 2 mi. from my house. IKEA--1 mile. How fortunate we are. There is only one other in this area.

The big Hospital complex--is 5 miles.
3 of the 6 grocery stores are 1 mi. from my house--another 2 are 2 miles.

The BIG White Marsh Mall--is 1 mile. A bit more if you drive all around it.
My work is 4 1/2 miles from home. Ten minutes drive...

Did you feel all of us waving and hear us shouting Bon Voyage!! as you drove off?

I hope you and Greg had a relaxing evening Friday before the trip down on the weekend. Did the four-feets behave?

I do know everything went well for Becky Friday morning -- key hand-off, breakfast with the realtor and a few other goodbyes. We chatted when she had settled into the hotel near Dulles. She and I were trying to cross paths that afternoon, but she called when I was just underway to tell me Greg's flight had been cancelled (bad), but she'd gotten him onto an earlier nonstop flight (good). I'm sorry I didn't get to deliver loads of hugs, but I'm glad she had a couple extra hours Friday evening with her DH!

Greetings from Alabama!!

What a day!!! It's been balls to the walls since 7:30 AM - bought a house, moved in, no furniture, so lunch was sitting on the counter enjoying my first Schlotzsky's sandwich in 10 years...then the non-stop running around started - needed food, cleaning supplies, something to sit on and something to eat off of...we finally stopped around 9 PM, and the jacuzzi soaking tub was worth the price of admission!!! LOVE the house, it's so much more than I expected and so is Huntsville - totally different than I imagined...very sprawled out, very green (also very flooded from the torrential downpour for the last 2 days)! The "kids" are busy exploring the house and it's fabulous for NasCat races!!! No furniture to slow them down! :) We got our Internet installed today, tomorrow Directv (and a whole bunch of other stuff) - our goal is to be somewhat settled in a month...all depending on how I feel - nothing is a race, we're taking our time and once we get our furniture it'll feel like a "proper" house - right now I'm sitting on a folding lawn chair :) Should get our household good on Wednesday, meet my new doc on the 9th - I'm assuming I'll start treatments the week after...

Figured I'd give y'all a health update, as I am sitting here at 3:40 AM, just finished a job and trying to get sleepy enough to head to bed - still love my docs and center, had an MRI which was clean, no tumors, no spreading - so, we discussed it and he's decided I was "undertreated" by Reed and wants to attack this very aggressively to prevent a recurrence and get 100% clean margins - surgery is scheduled for June 19th, complete removal of all lymphnodes in groin areas and I'll spend 4-6 weeks recuperating (it'll be a tough recovery) & then onto radiation/chemo to kill of any wayward little bastards that might want to spread to other places, he's opting to keep an eye on the liver for now - instead of going by last MRI from Reed, he wants to go by the biopsies that originally showed no cancer...I know it'll be tough, but this is the best solution and by removing everything he can, it'll also cause less radiation damage to the pelvic area since there will be no Brachy-therapy (internal) only external radiation

Praying here, too. Please discuss lymphedema with him, maybe get an opinion from your doctor at Reed on this approach also... I'm all for reducing your chances of recurrence, but those lymph nodes are a major drainage/collection point... You know I've had a good bit of annoyance from disrupting the lymph nodes under one arm, but that just affects that arm. I know you (and we!) want to see every bit of it gone from your body, but the "cons" of this approach could be more than just the rough recovery. If it's your surgical oncologist recommending this approach, talk to the oncologists who will be your chemo or radiation docs, also... you know, the whole "if you only have a hammer, you see every problem as a nail" thing.

Day II & I'm feeling pretty good - good painmeds & taking it very easy seems the way to go! I'm so grateful & humbled by all the prayers, well wishes & healing thoughts...they are working! Doc was very pleased with surgery results, he thinks the pathology will come back with totally clean margins! He even didn't have to do as much as he first thought & using old surgery scars minimized the discomfort! I go to see him on the 27th, should know then exactly when I start chemo/rads...he didn't minimize what Reed did, but feels that I was under-treated & aggressive was the way to go - by removing all the lymphnodes there will be no need for brachytherapy & less radiation damage :-) the staff at women's & children's hospital here are incredible! I was in ICU overnight & got much better individual care there :-) Tricare has been really good to me & the surgery cost me $25! MIL is here taking care of me for another week & I'm beyond lucky to have her - very good friends of us from MT should be rolling in here around noon, Greg needs his buddy to go out with and blow off a little steam, it's been very tough on him as well!

You GO, girl!

I'm delighted to hear you're healing up so quickly. Good for you, following doc's orders. :-) After you're cleared for PT, work on those range of motion exercises as much as you can, and don't be afraid to massage and stretch the tissue as the area heals... everything you can do to prevent scar tissue or break it down as it forms will help more than you can imagine! I'm so happy you've got a great medical team down there -- and that they're willing to take an aggressive stand against this cancer. We've got a lot of living to do yet, you and I -- we don't need even the ghost of a chance of cancer slowing us down!

Beck, I just had my second carpel surgery in 5 years. I did do 1 thing different this time. I had them send me to PT, not so much for range of motion (ROM) , but more for the ultrasound, cold laser treatments, and physical work on the scars themselves. The only thing uncomfortable was the physical "scraping" of the scars with a blunt/ round tool. These Rxs are all known to reduce scar tissue formation, the entire cause of the need for my the 2nd round. You may want to ask your therapist if such treatment is available and appropriate in you case.

Staples are still in, and I'm limping a bit - but, much better today & I'm cutting back on pain-meds...I go back on Tuesday & have a tiny hope of removal of staples & drains then...I'm being very, very good & not overdoing it...I want the all clear to drive!

Becky, I'm checking in and glad to hear you are doing better, also thankful that your new home brings you in touch with caring providers for your health. Prayers for full recovery I still pray for you and prayers of endurance for your sweetie. The Lord really matched you up with a good one.

I love the new house, I think it is a great new start for you both and gives you something to focus on while recovering.

Blessing to you both. AL is different than VA, but you will love us southern folks (my dads side of the family is from AL).

Thanks Jan, meeting radiologist today for mapping & possible start date...healing nicely, still have some discomfort - but, apparently I have a very high pain-level tolerance...gyn/onc very happy with progress & outcome of surgery. I'm finally driving again & today I'll drive myself to appointment - DH has been taking too much time off & I need him when I start treatments instead...love living here, from the house to the people - Huntsville is so much more than I expected 😍

Everything is ahead of schedule, healing wise - I will not be getting any chemo!!! AND the radiation will be very localized to zap the remaining cells and will cause the least amount of radiation damage!! Both docs are amazed at how well things are going and very pleased with the outcome!! :)

Dropping in to say hello...sorry that I have been missing in action for some months now and haven't taken the time to keep up with all that Bec has going on. I didn't read back very far here, but from what I read, it all sounds great. So glad that you are loving Huntsville Becky...I feel that you are the type that can settle in nicely where ever this life takes you...I am super excited that your attitude is still one of a very positive nature...that my friend is more than half the battle...our minds can be our worst enemies...I know that for sure.

I did have the opportunity at one point to look at the pictures you shared of your new home and it looks really lovely. I know that it must be lots of fun for you to decorate and make it a home for your family...I also read some of the post of your spread sheet for a garden...my hat is off to you for doing that...yep, we are the same kind of gardeners that you claim to have been before...if there is a space, in goes whatever we need to plant.

Our lives have been up in the air for some months and we have done very little gardening, nor have I been involved with chatting with any of my favorite gardeners here...I really miss folks when I don't stay in touch as much as I would like to...Just in the past week or so have thing settled enough that I have had an opportunity to tune back in to the mid atlantic gardeners group and I am having difficulty feeling as though I belong any more...so far behind in reading that I feel like a definite outsider...will need to work on correcting that now that life has calmed a bit.

So glad to have stopped by this thread and read your good news Becky...Of course, I will continue to hold you close in my heart and prayers...keep on keeping on girl...Will do better about keeping up with all you have going on.

Today I go for my 'dry-run' for radiation, they've made the mould for my legs, so I can lay 100% still, I'll get my radio tattoos & the radio is image guided so very little damage to surrounding organs - I get to wear not just one, but TWO gowns & I can't help but hear the 'I'm too sexy...' In the back of my head! It'll be 27 rounds & last day is the 13th of September - I'm expecting to be sore, a little burnt & tired - and God willing this will be it!

Lifting you up in prayer tonight, Becky... for strength and courage and healing, as your body battles this infection. Geez, talk about something you did not need. Are you continuing the radiation through this or waiting until the infection is kicked? Sure wish you could do these treatments by proxy... we could each take one, no big deal to do just one, and you'd sail through to the end of this protocol!

Beck, you should have been here in the spring, we had so many lilies in bloom at once the scent was luxurious. It was splendor in the grass. We actually had some lilacs bloom this year also, the last few winters have been so mild, we had no bloom. We figure aroma into our plantings as much as texture and color. My Lantana this year would start a hedge at you place, just magnificent plants from cuttings.

She's doing great, taking to training very well, a total PIA, a sweetheart, acts like a difficult 2 year old when she's tired & a tad rough with the other 3...I make sure they get 'mommy time' when she's in bed & they seem content with that - growing like a weed & we adore her!
