The branches look like an African sumac, Rhus lancea that I photographed a few days back in Las Vegas.

I'll put it on hold for the moment until I can ascertain as to which Elm it is by getting some photos of its leaves.

If possible, clip a branch and take some up close shots of twigs, buds, and leaf morphology. Elms are chameleonic...and excel at mimicry.
