I've been told by two different sewing machine guys that my 20 yr old Bernette (I think it was $300) is a piece o crap and not worth fixing. Before that I had a hundred dollar Singer bought in the 80's , not working right. This is surely too not worth the repair bill, since new common machines with more stitches can be got for $150 dollars on sale.

Meanwhile I hauled out Mom's Singer, and another old black Singer, from the 1950s, and looked on eBay- BOth are being listed and sold in the 250- 500 dollar range. Built to last forever!

Nice of you to ask, YankeeCat. At the moment, I am going to put one of these Singers to use, and consider rehabbing/ selling the other. The second one was left under the steps when we bought this house. It weighs about 30 pounds.

I read a long article about the current state of sewing machine making industry- it sounds like anything being made NOW that is under several hundreds or thousands $, is a piece of disposable junk. But there seem to be crafters and seamstresses out there who will buy older quality machines.

Robin, I easily came up with a website with a "field guide" to figure out the model number of mine. (sorry didn't bookmark..) Or google images, or ebay, if you can remember what it looks like. The Featherweight has a flip up part on the left and is smaller, comes in a black case. The 201-2 is a very heavy table top model.

Bizarro, Robindog.
My boss mentioned crosstraining me, months ago. I was thinking about it again , a lot, this week. Yesterday the sub-boss called me in and told me they are close to approving a job in that specific area (about the cross training) and of course I would be a likely candidate since I work closely related with it now. Coincidence, or...?

I am believing more in ''esp'' lately, due to a couple things like that.

I've had weird experiences before...when my DH & I were adopting our last airedale, the folks from the rescue brought over a large male named Riverdale...when they left, we decided to take him, but I told my DH I wanted to rename him Robin. Well, a week later the rescue called & said the original family wanted to keep Riverdale, & since it was 2 weeks before Christmas, & they had kids, I said they could have him...Barbara, the rescue lady, then told me another dale would be coming in to rescue in a few days...his name was Robin. What was even odder was that his breeder had named him Robin...the other 2 families he belonged to had named him Indy & Maddy...poor guy...4 homes in 17 months...no wonder he was a biter! I'm sure if he had been placed with other folks, he would have been put down.

I don't hate horseradish - but it can take over a dish. ...So, yesterday when ordering a grilled panini called "cowboy" ( sliced steak, arugula, roasted red pepper, sharp cheddar and horseradish on homemade focaccia ) I said "hold the horseradish". I wanted to taste the cheese and other favors. Of course out it comes with my hubby's plate - and of course it had Taaaaa Dahhhhhhh - yup. So I sent it back and watched my husband eat his meatball panini and balsamic dressing side salad. He was almost done with his food (he doesn't rush either) when my plate came out --- yea!! No horseradish --- -----and no cheese either --- it must have run away with the balsamic that was supposed to be on the side salad. The manager who had been out several times came over after we paid the bill and said sorry and could he shake my hand! The sandwich was good - I was happy to pay for it - but the responses from staff was a bit shocking. The waitress said " oh, did you want the cheese WITHOUT the horseradish? " Ha ha sometimes I do have peanut butter without jelly and I wear shoes with no socks and vice versa.

I think sometimes people just don't listen...or too many assumptions are made...I don't understand people

I don't know if I mentioned it before but there is a really old house about 8 houses down from us, this place is falling apart...I'm really surprised it made it thru the hurricane...people DO live there...there are pieces of wood missing where at night you can see their lights shining out of and I've seen birds fly into these holes...I can't even imagine what the inside looks like, paint is chipping, shutters crooked, fence is falling down except the 4 new bright white resin panels that the installed next to the fence that is falling down(why not just take it down?) well last year someone decided to paint the house...looks like the spray painted it with white paint but just the front and not the whole front(I really should try and get a pic of it) well I was driving past last week and now the front is blue! now mind you just the front lower part not the triangle peak...JUST THE FRONT
Here I drew a pic to give you an idea, but of course mine looks better cause you can't see all the wood that is coming off of it

Oh my gosh it's like putting lipstick on a pig

We have many like that here and in Pa where my daughter lives _ oh boy. The houses are just so darn old...the area economy is awful and folks have no money to fix. It is a cycle of disintegration. -- band aids and more disintegration. I wonder what the insides are like... It is overwhelming to think about what needs to be done. The house my son bought...the couple that sold did similar - painted up as high as they could reach! And with a semigloss or satin on flat! Same color and so it wasn't as shocking.

yes it seems so odd that the death penalty has been of recent debate in our state, we may have just gotten rid of it, and then these cases that just seem so deserving of it...

Death penalty law is a real mess here in CT. It was abolished last year...then we had the Newtown Massacre...also, now, the inmates on Death Row are petitioning to have their sentences changed to life since technically we don't have the death penalty any more...& those prisoners would include those that murdered the Pettit Family...

Gave up my greenhouse and now I get the 10 hr per week WTF - I am very upset.

Unfortunately, that's the norm for some kids...I had a foster child in my class one year who would bring in her Mom's letters written from Niantic, the state's prison for women...she told anyone who would listen about her Mom's drug problems...

how sad.
And there are entire communities in which it IS the norm to have friends or family with prison time...completely out of my zone of reality.

My DD brought home a girl of 14 who was sleeping in an abandoned car in the woods. Her Mom would leave her to come home from school(9thgrade) , wash the dishes, wash & fold the clothes, make sure the house was clean. Get her 2 younger sibling off the bus, and feed them. Most of the time her Mother left food stamps on the table and they were to walk to the store and order Italians. She was then to wash them, put them to bed and then she could do her HOMEWORK! Needless to say she was flunking, she knew her Mother was going to beat her for the grades so she ran away . Where was the Mother during all this you ask? Working at a cheesy bar under the table so she could buy her drugs. The woman was nuts...but I didn't know this until DD brought the kid home and I was threatened. She called and said she carried a gun...this was confirmed by her DD whom I have just taken in. :( Then she threatens to burn my house down at night time...in the conversation she mentions I have a handicapped son, might be a difficult situation getting him out in time!!! Those were fighting words right there!! Called the cops, had my line tapped so the calls could be recorded and then I took her to court and got custody of her DD with the childs father's blessings!!!

The rest of the story...the girl, Sarah blossomed under the wings of this huge family...her 1st Christmas she balled like a baby. Gifts prior to this were a new pillow and blanket. :(
She graduated from high school with straight A's, got a scholarship , had a little rough patch...but is now a E.R. , RN. :)

Wild ride of a job 1 store to 2 stores, to 3 stores. 15 hours a week to 35 hours a week to 52 hours a week and now back down to 10-15 hours a week with one store.

In other words 500+ dollars a week down to 100 a week = Unemployment. Or get or give me another JOB

and if I don't get one, you DG'ers will see me more often :-0
