Hi my name is Cindy (aka purpbutfly) and I am hosting a 3 B House Swap

Bats, Birds and Butterfly House
The swap is moving to Spring so there will not be one in August like there was last year. And I will have it at this time every year.

I am opening it February 17th, and will take names until March 3rd, then posts your buddy name and address on the March 4th. I would like to ask you all to mail your buddies house so that she may get it before the first day of Spring, March 20th. If you are not in the address exchange please dmail me your addy.

It does not have to be home made, it can be bought. If you want to make a homemade one it can be made out of ANYTHING,( old cowboy boots, cowboy hats, cans, gourds, you name it.) If a bird can get in it, it's a house, but bat houses and butterfly houses are a special type of house. Pictures alone do not qualify, but if you want to decorate with pictures that will work.

Anything goes so long as there is either Bat, Bird or Butterfly with a House, inside decoration or outside decoration. Here are some links to give you some ideas for your houses.

When signing up please specify what type of house you want. Here are some links to some really neat houses.

As for $$$$$$, don't go bankrupt trying to find the perfect house, but do make sure it's a good one and won't fall apart before summer is over, lol. So let's have some FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Functional Birdhouse for me to receive please, and I'd like to send the same if possible, Cindy. This is always a great traditional swap and am glad you're hosting it early.

Among our year-round residents, the Eastern Bluebirds already appear to be in courting mode.

I definitely want a functional house. I don't have any room for decorations inside, but my yard fence is still missing a few houses, so a decorated outside house would be cool. Birds please.

May I join this swap? Even if nothing takes up residence in these houses, they would make great garden decorations, and I love garden decorations. I will accept any kind of house anyone wants to send me, even just a purely decorative house, with no other function. I was wondering if butterfly houses worked, and a tiny bit of research brought up the article below, so you can decide what you think, but no matter what ,they are cute.
As for bats, in summer I frequently see them flying at dusk when I walk on the road. There are trees lining the road. But I have never seen one in my yard, even though the yard is surrounded by trees, so go figure. In my area we have had rabid bats several times in recent years, but I am not afraid of them, and do not much think they would take up residence in a place (low) that I might choose to site a bat house.
In spite of all this palavering , I think this is a great swap and want to try it.

I googled bird houses to make and came up with this bird FEEDER, so I made one of these. The birds found it is minutes, but it is hanging beside my main feeder. I guess it will only be a short while till the squirrels find it and chew it to bits, after they have stolen all the seed. Don't worry, I'm not sending one of these, but it is just too easy to make from a can with a plastic lid.
looks like the hole in plastic lid is hard to see, but just cut hole in plastic and add a perch stick (I glued this a bit so it would stay longer.

Yesterday when I felt trapped inside by the weather, I moved this feeder to the back where I could see it out my greenhouse window over the sink. The birds found it in minutes. I had not used it in a while as it was in a place not easy to see out the window, and also the squirrels acted like such greedy guts over it. This morning when I went out I saw a squirrel headed toward this feeder, but he scampered away when he heard me. The only feeder I have that really keeps squirrels at bay is a chain link one , and they have actually bent some of the links on it. I would not mind them having some seed to eat, but they tote it away by the cheek-fulls and come back for more.

Crystal, thanks for sharing that easy bird feeder idea with us.
Guess coffee cans would be perfect.

I notice you're in Alabama, seems the birds are up early there!
I've not seen many birds here last year, but the feeders emptied fast. Guess they were keeping a watchful eye on my zoo of cats.
Squirrels tend to be hoarders.
Found these tips to deter them.

There's been a flock of fat robins here for several weeks. They are not scary either and let me walk fairly close.
I think there are several cardinals nesting in the yard. I see them flying out of the same bushes repeatedly. They build low nests, like about 3 to 4 feet off the ground, which would be pretty risky if you had cats, but I do not, altho I love cats. One year some cardinals made a nest in a camellia bush near the steps. It was a poor choice because the Chihuahua watched carefully and as the babies started to fledge, she got them one by one. There was no way I could stop it. Besides which it is very hard (impossible) to thwart instinct.
I recently liberated a blue bird box from a tangle of smilax and other menacing bushes and vines. It had been chewed by a squirrel so I had repairs to do, but I hope someone will accept it as a suitable home. I have seen at least one bluebird around here this spring. Is it still here, I wonder.

Hubs is going to mount the Bluebird house for me. I could but would need to drag out a ladder...lol Just one of the many reasons I married a tall fellow. Crystal, did you make it? It's really sturdy and know it won't be long before we have another nesting pair. The platform feeder I'm thinking about hanging under our side porch, that way it will be somewhat protected from the elements and we will still be able to watch the birds feed. It's almost too pretty to use and may end up displaying it on our back porch with others. And you won't believe this, but I looked at every craft store within an hour's drive for decorative birds to use for the Easter swap. Found some and passed. They weren't nearly this nice and ended up going with another idea. These I've packed in our Christmas decorations so we can enjoy them with our other bird-themed ornaments for many years.

No, Fruity, I didn't make the BB house. I got it at a local flea market. The woman sells homemade jelly/jam/fruit butter and the man sells bird houses. I have been dealing with the woman and talking to her for years. I just don't know her name. I did put some polyurethane on it. The birds I got at an after Christmas sale and had them hanging for a while here and thought someone else should enjoy them also. I had fun getting the box together. Had to make a trip over to the recycling place to get a box they would fit in. I have never failed to find a suitable box there the couple times I have tried. People just fling boxes in there w/o breaking them down, so it makes it easy.

Here come Alicia and Crystal with very good taste indeed! Good job ladies.
You're right Fruit, that birdhouse is too pretty to be placed outdoors.

My birdfeeder is here!!! Happy, happy, happy!! Wooohoooo... I'm over the moon with this lovely cobalt blue body birdfeeder.
Thank you so much!!
This is only temporary and Kel is getting me a taller shepherd hook, so the birds will safely eat from it without fear of cats pouncing. Simply beautiful and cobalt is my DH's favorite color.

There's no card in the box.. so.. to my buddy.. I appreciate your choice very much. Thank you again. God bless you, whoever you are!!

Joy,
You are SO blessed, I long for the day when I was young and growing up on a farm with hundreds of piglets, my horse, kittens and puppies, all the time. I remember rescuing tiny baby screech owls EVERY year when they fell out of a big tree in our front yard. Now I'm stuck in the city, dreaming of the day when I can get land again and get back to my childhood happiness! Hopefully in the next few years I can at least buy land.

Patti, that set of triplets isn't named. I plan on selling them. One moon spotted doe and the two bucklings in that group. But we now have ten more and three more does expecting. We only name the girls we are keeping, so far this year is tree names. We have Maple, Juniper, Larch, Myrtle, Willow, and two new black girls that I haven't found a good name for. You need to come out to our DG Round Up and bottle feed some next month. It is always a big hit with everyone.
I also had the loving animal restrictions on guys I dated since I showed horses first. They came before anything else. My DH used to think I was silly sweating over the animals before worrying about my comfort but now he is worse than I am sometimes. Show him a baby animal and he gets all gushy.
BTW, my buddy's package should be there on Saturday. Woo Hoo!
Below are Myrtle, Juniper, and the little moon spotted doeling.

She also sent some packages of seeds for the garden, and a wind chime with ladies and cowboy hats and boots! Just beautiful! Thanks so much Jaye, I love all of your pressies!

I do believe we all have the best intentions and then our packages are left to fend for themselves while in transit. I've been pins and needles many times myself.

Just noticed the Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds are getting closer and is high time to hang their feeders. I made two gallons of sugar-water a couple of weeks ago now stored in the refrigerator with great anticipation. Anybody further South and West of Virginia seen them yet?

MM, how terrible for you and your buddy. I received a package in a swap that had a can get loose in transit, smashing a lot of things. I feel your loss. I am a big believer in bubble wrap, packing so tight that nothing moves.

Sooz, we have had hummers for a couple weeks. And a few orioles too. The spring migration is small here compared to the fall.

I realize things get broken in transit...I just feel bad for my swap buddy that sent the package. Heavens knows over the years I had mailed things only to have them broken when delivered and opened.

Eye is just a little more bothersome than the first one a couple of years ago. Then again, this is went much longer..but is doing fine according to the doctor. Just will be happy to be off the restrictions now that it is time to be outside.

I haven't seen hummers here yet but then I just got home from visiting my mom. I then had the cataract surgery so haven't been exactly watching. I have finally gotten Gold Finches...have tried for years to get them and finally succeeded!!!

Tina, please read the dmail I sent. It was a very hard agonizing decision whether or not to post the items had arrived broken. In all fairness to you, I finally thought I should post. It is the thought that counts and I can see you put much thought into the wonderful items.

Goldhillal, I will still need my glasses I am sure but at least I won't be "legally blind" as was the case before the surgery. With my mom being like she is, I had just put off way to long to have it done. So far so good. I am experiencing a few more things that I didn't with the other eye but the doctor said it is okay so far. We shall see...just glad it is over.

My contacts were fitted for far vision in one eye and near in the other, and I had bad astigmatism. It was simple to have the replacement cataract lenses fitted the same way, as I was already familiar with using my eyes this way.

I remember when my granddaddy had cataract surgery years ago, he had to lie flat of his back for 2 weeks in the dark and not move his head. We've come a long way, Baby!

Ladies, I am Joy's swap buddy but due to some circumstances I have been unable to get the package mailed. I have not been allowed to drive due to knee problems and then eye surgery. Immediately following my eye surgery the first of the month, I was called home as my mom is in critical condition. She has had numerous UTIs, the Norovirus and aspirate pneumonia in the past month all at age 94. Hospice says they have no clue how she continues so needless to say I have been here.

I am truly sorry Joy that your package has not been mailed...I did send a dmail to Cindy requesting she explaining what has been happening but it seems she did not receive the original message...sent another one today. I do have a gift and when able to return home will get it in the mail. Again I apologize for the delay.

It was adding stress re: this swap but I have done the best I can under all the circumstances. Still can't drive as I have not been able to get checked and new glasses prescribed. Limited time on computer due to connections here.

(((((((((Joy)))))))))))))))

A note to my Buddie, Cindy
I am so very sorry mine is late as well. But it is finished and going in the mail today!!

I've had so much fun in creating it especially for you! One little hint, it was inspired by a piece of fabric from my first quilt.
...can't say I've ever seen one like it, roflol unless someone is sharing my brain.

Cindy, this is not stressful at all, I think you are a wonderful hostess to this swap.

I have really enjoyed seeing all the choices everyone made, and smiled as you each shared...Plus, I just love my b-houses from Linda kay!
Thank you, again.
