I've just bought a house and I have no idea about plants, so I thought this was a good way to learn!

I plan to go through and catalogue all the plants and figure out how to look after them properly once I know what they are.

This is a nice looking tree in a shady area behind our house. The photo's show the tree, the leaves, and the buds forming at the end of the stems.

It looks to have some dead flowers in and amongst it which I have included as well.

    Thanks in advance!

    Scott

It looks like a Camellia. Remove the dead flowers as they can harbor a fungus that may infect flowers that open later. There are two types of camellias - some flower in the spring and others in late autumn or early winter. If you must prune them, do so shortly after flowering - if you wait too late in the year you will end up cutting off the flower buds for the next season.

Thanks for the advice Tom! Have cleared the dead flowers now.
