GREAT PRIZE TO BE announced LATER :)
Round 2 you say????? Some of us are still anxiously waiting for round 1 to reach us ! LOL But from what everyone is saying it is definitely going to be worth the wait!! And then the anxiousness will start all over again while waiting for round 2 !!!
Help from anyone who is still to receive the robin ahead of me --- looking for green bean seeds---pole variety and also bush variety --- my son has requested these as one of the things for in our garden this year --- so , if anybody has any available please let me know--would greatly appreciate it !! Thank you so much. Shirley
evening ev1 We Are haven a BLIZZARD Here can hardly see the road we have about 2" so far Sure glad I don't have to go out into it . Just lazing around tonight kids wanted to play cards but not feeling up to it .
Shirley, I seem to recall seeing packets of green bean seeds in the robin, both pole and bush, I think. Perhaps whoever has the robin now (or whoever is getting it next if it is in flight) can check for you and set some aside for you?
Thanks mellen !! Can't wait to get it !! For those of us at the end, It has seemed like forever since we got this robin flying ! I didn't even make a guess as to when it would get back to Susie !! Being the first time participating in anything like this , I didn't have any idea what to guess !!
It arrived yesterday. Between work and a dentist appointment, I didn't get home until really late, and it had been drizzling/sleeting all afternoon, so the box was a bit damp. I didn't get a chance to even open it yet, I'm looking forward to that this evening. Is that a flat rate box, I didn't notice. I may try to run to the post office at lunch time and see if I can get a replacement.
Unless the box changed since I mailed it, it was a reused box that we were mailing by weight. But you might check the box again.
Well, turns out my guess for when the robin would return home was a bit early :) But for a while, it looked like it might actually be pretty close to arrival time :) Wonder who will be the lucky winner?... This robin does like to fly!
OK, thanks. If I can pick up another at lunch today, I will, otherwise, it seems like it is holding up OK. I guess it didn't get soaked through from the drizzle, and once it dried, it looks fine, and feels strong.
I probably won't be able to get to the post office until tomorrow, to send it on it's way. I'm supposed to work overtime tonight, and that usually means I get out too late to get there in time.
The assortment is great!! I don't think I've ever seen such a huge robin. This is by far the best robin I've ever participated in!! I found alot that I am looking forward to trying out. Just incredible.
GM & TGIF Happy MARCH its my friends B-day today & She is in TX So another friend is comming over this afternoon & she & I are going to Celebrate Judys Birthday here at My Place with Cake & Coffee :)
While Going through My seed stash & getting her started in gardening :) so far I have no Pain this morning
sure hope it will stay that way .
Looks Like a bright Sunny day So guess I will Play in the seeds again & sort a few for the robin when it gets home so i can add to it & Get it back in the air for second time around .
ya all have a fun Safe weekend .
So is anyone starting seeds they got from the robin? Haven't heard much about that yet...figured we'ld be seeing pix of babies.. Or is it just the lagers that got the box late that are still here? LOL. I'm starting a whole tray of goodies today..mostly Hibiscus and tomatoes for the moment.. Will be heading to the back bedroom in a few to begin somemore... I got soo many wonderful things and I just can hardly wait to grow and watch them come into bloom.
Here's some pix to get you all excited about the possibilities...lol. Most were started about 2 months ago from the Rare Seed Trade, and now will be working on those things I got from the box here a few weeks ago.
I am still in awe everytime I think how small those seeds are and what joy and beauty they can bring. No gift is as beautiful as a flower, thankyou all for sharing your beauty with me! Kathy
Thank you, Kathy, for your envy that arrived this week, and Michelle for yours that's on the way. Don't fret just now being able to mail, Michelle. I still have a handful of seeds promised that need to be on their way, too.
Despite those careful calendar calculations months ago, I missed the guess when the Robin would be home by at least a week or two. It sure didn't land there yesterday.
Greatest Robin yet is right, Deb. Glad you found things you'd like to try.
Diamond Girl, you're next! You were my #1 seed enabler a few years ago.
Haven't started seeds yet. Need to go through them and make some notes about the new ones so I can decide where to plant them :) Thought I'd have gotten through them in February, but that just wasn't to be... Perhaps this weekend?
I am so sorry for the delay. I had to work on Saturday, and by the time I got out our post office was closed. I have the box with me at work today, and will run to the post office at lunch time. Again, I am so sorry, I planned to get to the post office Saturday morning, but really couldn't pass up the opportunity for paid overtime, it's not offered very often.
I started seed yesterday :) no pics, but have 2 trays of veggie seeds and two trays of flowers. Got a mini greenhouse thing at the hardware store and some lights...fingers crossed! Will be doing more as soon as I can get into my shed out back. The door is frozen shut :( I have more trays I need to get at!
In the path of a huge storm...funny thing is forecast is for 0" to 12" because they dont really know where it will hit...I suspect we will get about 8" over night. Hoping for a snow day tomorrow.
It's on it's way. I left the receipt in the car, which has the tracking number on it. I'll run outside later and grab it so I can post the tracking number. I had put on one of the delivery confirmation stickers that was in the box, but the fellow at the counter pulled it off and said that a number is automatically generated, and that the box can be tracked using that. Has this been going on for a while? I don't think I've mailed a box since last year's robin.
YES THAT IS HOW IT IS DONE NOW So as for the Conf #'s in the Robin they are OBSOLETE & can be thrown out if anyone wants to . was just checking in , Lunch break been painting so going back to it back this eve .
Yeah, the conf number used to be given to us on a separate piece of paper from the receipt you receive when you pay. But now, the conf number is printed right on the receipt. One fewer pieces of paper to keep track of :)
Thank you for the seeds, Michelle. I was so touched by your note! You are an amazing person and friend.
All you in the path of the snow storm, be safe. We may get a grand total of 3" of the white stuff, although I secretly do wish for more. A prediction of just a few inches around here is enough to make folks go crazy in the grocery stores, whether or not a flake falls. Early morning news already showed milk shelves and bread racks that were nearly bare. I had planned to grocery shop today anyway, decided to go in another direction less traveled and pretty much breezed in and out of the stores.
Not to sound like a broken record, but those of you with a printer or access to one, it's easy to print your own USPS labels and get a free delivery confirmation number with each one.
Fruity, glad you received the seeds :)
Actually, the conf number is now included whether or not you print your own label... Another recent change.
To those who are getting snow: For those of you who enjoy the snow, have fun! :) For those who do not enjoy it, admire the beauty. And everyone, stay safe!
I think I would enjoyy getting snowed in more, if I didn't work in a field that required me to be there no matter what. I am thankful not to be getting the storm orginally forcasted for us.I agree with you michell, that it is beautiful, but I dislike driving in it.

Today I taught ashlee how to make sashay scarves on her loom. It amazes me how much like me she is. She loves all things artsy Fartsy, just like her mom;)
Oh so many goodies in that box...am looking forward to seeing all the different Hibiscus that are now popping up. Won't relist here, but come on over to pfg's germination thread... Great dicussions on various methods, equipment being used, plant stands, lights, germination times and pots...
My son & I "saved" two labs tonight that were running. Saw them on our way home from dinner. After two hours and several phone calls, I was put in contact with the owner and I got both dogs back to her. She had just moved here 2 weeks ago from NC. So these dogs were running in unfamiliar territory. So glad there was a happy ending :)

So Hope you all we be Patient Till we get to the bottom of this . we can't do Much about an SCREWED Up POSTAL SERVICE .
Yep, Susie is correct, unfortunately !! I received the round robin box on the 20th--- sent it back on it's way home to Susie on the 21st---confirmation said she would receive it on the 23rd---checked tracking info on Sat. 23rd--in Grand Rapids--not delivered to Susie as confirmation said it would be :( Checked tracking # again this morning and says it has been received at the SAGINAW post office again !!! Do not know what in the world is going on except that our absolutely fabulous postal system has struck again !!!!!! Tried to find out info from post office-- they say it is NOT at their facility , that it must be out in route somewhere !!! Out in route SOMEWHERE????? Just exactly where is it going ???? They said from the info they have they are not sure if it is being delivered back to me or if it is going to Susie !!! Just what good does tracking do ????? NOTHING?????? Guess all I can do on my end is wait and see if it does come to me today (mail comes around 5 p.m.) and if not, check tracking again to see what it says at that time !!!
Sorry for venting on here, but just a tad bit frustrated right now with our NOT so wonderful postal system once again !!!!! Good ole' postal system around here --- keep RAISING rates and keep
LOWERING service !!! SORRY everyone, tried to get it back home as quick as possible but the postal system refused to let that happen once again !!!!
Well, SORRY to report more disappointing news :( Box did not reach Susie nor did it come back to me today !! Susie and I both have checked tracking # and tracking has not updated at all so do not know where it is or what is going on !!

Wow Not sure where to start except Just to say TY TY TY For all of you who Shared so many Seeds from your Gardens with me . I Know for sure My Gardens are going to Shine So Bright from spring to Fall .
I was Trying to look up a few seeds that I'm Not sure of & Wonder if anyone here can tell me about them
Solumn cherry ornamental bush cannot find it online . the seeds look like a red pepper seed .
well it is getting harder to stand or sit any longer got to lay back in my recliner for awhile My Kitchen table is loaded with seed packs but i can't do any more right now so will try to get back on later.
Solanum Pseudocapsicum goes by the nickname "Jerusalem Cherry" and a few others. We consider it a perennial weed here but it would be an annual for you, Susie. Fruits are mildly poisonous or can cause irritation if eaten, so what your critters around it. The plants are pretty in containers though.
TY Fruity Guess I Don't need any for i have vowed not to plant anything that I Have to over winter :) except for my Brugs :) well my brother came over to hook up my water filter system Now maybe I can have some better Coffee In the mornings :)
Well between sorting my seeds & Keeping ones i want to try there is hardly a dent in them , so there will be lots to go through . well time for me to call it quites for the night. back in the morning
Birder, You'd love participating. There are monthly group swaps and trades that are often referred to as robins. This one was for seeds where the box itself was nicknamed "the Robin". Each participant took out and put back in their fair share of seeds, either from commercial sources or those harvested from our gardens, before sending it to the next person in the list of participants (found at the top of the page). It has literally flown all over the Country since last Fall and has just landed back home with deejay9 (Susie), our wonderful hostess for this group and so many others. I think this was the Seed Robin's 4th year Susie has hosted and many of us tout it was the best yet. There's also a Spring seed Robin getting ready to fly.
The link below will take you to current (and past) swaps. There are also a few chat threads sprinkled in. Feel free to join any of the current groups or discussions that interest you. Also the monthly plant swaps that have just started again this year are always popular. Hope this helps. You will be welcomed!
Yay! The robin's home! Have fun going through all those seeds, Susie :)
Need to go through my seeds that I picked out and get things planted. Looks like we're passed our frost dates now :) My tuberoses and dahlias have even started sending up new leaves/shoots! :)
Gm All & Welcome to the new forum Birdie & will Add you to the 2nd time around sent you the link to that one . My day is going to be spent sorting through more of the seeds . & getting the new flight path printed off . I hope to get the robin back in the air on Monday .
ALI : Your Prize will also go out on Monday Hope you will like it :) so Now going to close this one & Spend more time On the NEW One . Hope you all will come chat with us even if your not playing .
NEW 2nd Time ROBIN http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1293173/
THANK YOU to SUSIE for all her effort & hard work in getting the "robin" going for all of us !!! Even with all the postal "mishaps" this poor thing had to endure , it was great fun to see what would be in the robin waiting for us all to share !!! Looking forward to being a part of the 2nd time around "without" the mishaps hopefully !!! THANK YOU SUSIE!!!!!
I'm still buried under SNOW! Been hibernating up here in NH and not checking my garden email...I've missed a lot! But I am back and ready to start my seeds on their life journey!
I can't believe I guessed right! YAHOO!
Susie sent me a beautiful box filled with fun stuff...
The box has a garden design and inside she painted a flower pot with a beautiful cat and my nickname on it! I love it! She sent me some bulbs, a plant hanger, and a trimmer sharpener! Everything to get me started this year!
THANKS Susie! IT was so much fun playing! Today I am going to start those seeds -- got a grow light and the basement is my new garden until things warm up here! I have crocus about two inches up and the tips of tulips and daffs right now...exciting stuff!
Below are the photos of the robin prize! And my new grow light set up...I've never started the seeds inside...always waited until mid-may to start but this year I can't wait!
ALI Glad you like I didn't know if you had a camera so i posted a pic on the New thread glad you like as for the Bulbs they are a mixed GLADs well got to get ready to go out with the girls for super ya all have a great eve
Alicat...I put the pruner sharpener in, hope you have pruners to use with it..lol. I carry pruners in my back pocket and the little sharpener always with me thru the season...Just hate it when pruners get dull, and I hate it when I have to resort to using a rock...lol. Just a few swipes and the blades are like new. ( And if your interested, Corona has some of the best pruners out there (the bypass type), and will last a lifetime I promise!!!!!) Enjoy!
Kathy ~ Where did you get your pruner sharpener and what does it look like? I usually send my pruners to my husband to sharpen, as he has many tools. It would be handy to have one in my pocket or nearby in my garden tool box.
See pix 3 above and that is what the package looks like. Got it from Home Depot 2 years ago when they carried them. I bought all they had left at the end of the season as I tend to loose them somewhere in the garden (I guess..lol). They are about $3. And they measure about 5" long, perfect size for the pocket. Ask your Home Depot if they will carry them, of all the sharpeners I have found this one the best. (I have bought others for my pocket over the years and can't remember the name, guess that tells ya which is my favorite...lol.)
Corona Sharpening Tool Afiladora, AC4300, 5" Super carbide file. (is two sided, one side is for beveled (cutting) edge and the other is for flat side of blade to takes out burrs from sharpening). http://www.coronaclipper.com or 1-800-847-7863.
I just called Corona 1-800-234-2547. They have a new model, only one sided,(metal side), and lists for $10.34. And told me it's available at Lowes (or their website). Hope that helps...
Hi all - Im posting here because this is where I believe I received the seeds from.
Last spring, I planted what was labeled "Sugar Baby", I presumed watermelon as the seeds were black and looked like water melon seeds.
Vines grew nicely, flowered and produced a few small "watermelons". I was so excited. I've never grown them before. However, they are not getting any bigger than a large fist. Ribbed like a cantaloupe, green and striped like a watermelon. I harvested one tonight because the leaf closest to the fruit was dried and shriveled. That is what I understand to be "harvest time". So I cut into it and not only does it look like a cucumber (seed grouping and shape) but smells like one too. Tastes like a cross between honeydew and cucumber. (Im so confused right now)
So, best I can figure, I got cross pollinated seeds?
Thoughts? Anyone else pick them out of the baggies and get something similar?
The group of vegetables from Curcurbitaceae Family includes cucumber, summer squash (e.g. zucchini), winter squash (e.g. acorn butternut), pumpkins, watermelons and melons (including cantaloupe and muskmelons and honedews).
So, for Cucumbers:
the Family is Curcurbitaceae
the Genus is Cucumis
the Species is sativus
So, for Melons
the Family is Curcurbitaceae
the Genus is Cucumis
the Species is melo
Cantaloupes and muskmelon are difficuolt to distinguish; both have orange flesh, netted rinds and a musky aroma that gives meusmelon its name. Honeydews have a smooth rind, high sugar content and no musky flavor.
So, for Watermelons
The Family is Curcuribitaceae
the Genus is Citrullus
the Species is lanatus
So, I would think the Genus Cucums from the cucumber and the Genus Cucumis from the melon may have cross pollinated. Others with more scientific knowledge will be able to give more information.
Or, do you think you may have picked it too early and it "could" have been a honeydew which are green flesh? They have light colored seeds. They both come from the same Family and the same Genus--different Species.
Interesting the Watermelon comes from a different Genus.
You might want to put this question on the Propagation forum.
All I can say is I got lots of mis-labeled seeds from the robin, lots of surprises... Maybe cross-pollinated, maybe just mis-ID'd or mixed up in harvesting. Some surprises were OK, some made good compost.
Same here As you all Know i will not be doing the round Robin this fall I have ask Amanda if she might want to take it over & she will get back with me if she dose not have time for it maybe someone else will Volenteer for the robin & I will DONATE To the robin .
kink in the neck this morning so back to the heat pad ya all have a great day .
No Amanda, I resurrected it because this is where I got the seeds from.
I dont think I picked it too soon, but Im sure it could have hung there longer. It doesnt taste bad, but I dont care for honeydew or muskmelon. I am growing Amish melon too, but thats not what is it - nor where it would have come from.
Here is a pic..
Ya Know sometime people collect seeds some some of their store bought melons & other types of squash & put then into the robin In that case No one really knows what is going to grow from those seeds , many plant seeds do not come true to the parent plant .
have you tasted it ? maybe you found a new type of melon :) I have melon no bigger then a soft ball
not tried it yet but will later today when i get home .
this is also why I wanted people to put their NAMES On Seed packs But the only one That was not afraid to add their Nameds to seeds that I Found were from Gardenseeder, Poisondarfrog,
risingcreek, patti, wwkathy, Mittsy,
When Stephanie described that melon it rang a bell somewhere upstairs, but I can't for the life of me remember. I actually bought one a couple of years ago that sounded just like that. I asked the produce guy what it was, and I thought "why not something different?" We ate it and enjoyed it. It's not something that is carried all the time at the regular grocer. I don't think I can remember any more than that.
My gardening group was given a plant that grows a fruit that tastes like a cucumber at one stage and is like a melon at another stage. Unfortunately, our plant didn't make it through last winter, so we never got to enjoy (or try) its fruit. Unfortunately, I don't remember the name of the plant, but perhaps that's what you have there. Hopefully, someone can help you to ID the plant.
Susie, I put my name on things. Most things anyway. Maybe not all.
I did aqste it. Tasted somewhat like a honeydew and cuke at the same time. I may have a few others on the vine as well.
I shall love him and hug him and name him "cuney melon" :)
I was Just going through the seed robin from this pass fall & getting it ready to mail out to Amanda
to share with the rest of you , & I came across a pack of seeds that someone had gotten out of one of our 2010 robin & put in our 2012-13 they are called Banana Melon so maybe you might
have taken out a few from the pack to try ???
also when i did a search for the banana melon I found this & & it sounds & looks more like whay you discribed.
Sent you some milkweed seed via the Seed Purge Amanda.
The town I'm in is bordered E & S by marsh/preservation land that is just teeming
with milkweed, thus no real butterfly decline to report here.
However, for the third year in a row, we sadly noticed a sharp decline in our bat population.
We used to have so many we couldn't count them all - this year we had 2 bats.
Living near the marsh we are bat-friendly as they are great at keeping the insect
population down and to see them reduced to such a low level really makes me sad.
Dragonflies were very prominent this year - they were huge too.
Im not sure its a banana melon. Poking around, it is reminding me of a Charentias Melon. Maybe not ripe enough though. I will take pics of the leaves and the melons that are still on the vine. See if we cant narrow it down.
I from away am sending you some as soon as the Syrica pods get dry , See m Evelyn I had not forgotten , takes them a while to dry to opening here , I don't know why , and I know they grow .. Not always an easy plant , not hard really either ,
One of those things with lots of differences ..
Thanks, Ju. I will wintersow a few and direct sow a few now or when I get them and then some in spring. I do not think they would do well inside. I am trying to do as much as possible outdoors these days as hubby does not not like my messes inside.
I always wash my pots and trays in the downstairs bathroom, which take up a lot of room. I did use to sow a lot of seeds there, too. Then I covered them in vegetable baggies and put them under lights until they germinated. Some inside, and some on the back porch. I did not do that last year as I was ill. Hopefully I can do some this year, tho'...
I guess in terms of germination things vary by species.
The a. curassavica and a. physocarpa have been very easy. Everything else requires pre-treatment. 90 days cold/moist stratification in your refrigerator. When I took mine out last year I left a bag on the counter by accident and they sprouted right there on the counter. :)
