March signals the start of gardening in Minnesota.
Seeding of annuals & tomatoes in the warm areas of the house or greenhouse.
Soon the snow & ice will disappear.
Gardens will come alive towards the end of the month.
March definitely ends winter!

I hate to post photos of so much snow after all those colorful photos up there, (like pepper's Black-Capped Chickadees and Cardinals and the fuchsia gooseberry).
Now this is some beautiful weather right here! - Actually, that was a few days ago but the snow is still here, 95% of it anyway! The last photo is after I shoveled some and shook the snow off of everything! -
This weather is kinda tolerable though compared to what upper Midwest like Minnesota and what Bernie probably deals with. Ours was just so scenic because it was just freezing or a little above and the wet snow stuck to EVERYTHING! Pepper has probably had twice as much snow a little further South and East of Kansas City, Mo.

Low to mid 30s today and sunny. Took advantage of the weather to go sledding in the yard with my nephew. It lasted all day and he plum wore me out. lol. A friend and her daughter joined us this afternoon. We both pushed the kids to get them going but I always fell into the snow so I got pretty wet. At one point I had snow up under my coat and hoodie and had to shake it out. lol. Lots of fun but the kids are gone now so I'm kicking back under a cover. Wet jeans and thermals don't feel good when they get cold!! lol

Wonderful Hawaii weather has returned. Ground is drying up, can finally get some gardening done
Light tradewind breezes, blue sky, light fluffy white clouds and temps mid 70's. Its been a wet cool winter and the plants are reacting like its spring.
Hey Kelli, that Fuchsia Flowering Gooseberry is neat. We had gooseberries back in England and I grow fuchsias here in Hawaii but combining the two, wow. We are zone 10-11 here on the Big Island so should grow here. Where can I get one. Next stop ebay.

Am praying for an ever so slooooooooooooooow melt here:

Regina poised to break 57-year snowfall record
A gentle dusting of snow began falling on Regina Thursday afternoon, perhaps enough to establish a new record for a winter season in the city.

People in the city were keeping close watch on the skies when it was learned that Regina was just 2.5 centimetres away from setting a new record.

Prior to Thursday, the record snowfall set in the winter of 1955-1956 was 165.7 centimetres, as noted by sensors maintained by Environment Canada.

Snow began falling Thursday afternoon, but it was a light snowfall and was off and on.

Officials with Environment Canada said they would have to check their recording devices, at the end of the day, to determine if they could declare the record officially broken.

Kwanjin Black Mondo grass was the main one that caused the headache. The vast majority of Canadian suppliers listed at Dave's aren't paying extra funds (I'm guessing) to have links to their plants from the Plantfiles. Google searching didn't bring me much luck either (some nurseries up here will only sell to locals). So I slowly went through the major Canadian sellers, province by province, until I found the silly things (I do so love them).
Oh and the other plant was a stephanotis. I can get a local florist to order it but I'm hoping one supplier that I contacted can sell it to me cheaper. I'll also check a local grocery store (Safeway) and see if they will be bringing it in. I've seen it there before and I'm positive the ones they had were cheaper that what the florist will charge and theirs was more mature.

Next will be my hunt for the black cherry tomato and a hanging plant (whose name escapes me right now but local greenhouses do bring it in). One greenhouse, in particular, carried the hanging plant for many years but it is in a small town about 2 hours away. She sold it with about 8 plants in the basket and the vines were about 6 feet long and for a very good price. It was truly eye candy.

found it (at least a pic of it and its' name) : Cascade Wine Red’ Lophospermum http://www.garden.org/subchannels/landscaping/containers?q=show&id=2638

Oh and remembered one other Lisianthus...it is the double Grandiflorum I think, that I grew years ago http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/search.php?q=lisianthus&Search=Search PlantFiles. I contacted a greenhouse, a 4 1/2 hour drive North of here (where we lived for a number of years, to see if they are still selling it. She said they would check with their supplier and if they are still growing it she will drive down here and drop them off (she has a good friend in my city she hasn't seen in years).

Sky clear and deep blue. The southerly wind returned this morning and is becoming bothersome. It blows until about 4pm and then calms as the sun goes down. Bamboos sound like the rigging of an old sailing ship, banging and rattling. Wind is howling through the Ironwoods.

28F fog...misty rain...gusting winds...huge snowflakes

Flooding report has been released and we are in for it unless we have a very slooooooooooow melt.

http://www.newstalk650.com/story/saskatchewan-flooding-forecast-shows-areas-where-risk-very-high/100175

lots more rain and snow is in our forecast... :(

Temps will be dropping again here very soon and then we are heading above freezing (snow/rain).

For us to do that big jump to warmth means someone down there will have an equal drop in temps.

Kwanjin I looked through your plantfile pics and your taste in perennials is very similar to mine. I'd still have some Black Mondo but we had an unexpected freeze last year and mine were toast after that. :'(

It's 56 degrees and very windy here today - too cold for me to work outside, even though I have tons of stuff I need to do - will just have to wait until it warms up - maybe, by the end of the week.

At the weather site I post at I see the Floridians begging for warmth to come back their way...I don't have the heart to tell them we have another huge drop in temps in our forecast (though I'm sure they are aware since they are good at reading models). I must admit I giggle though when I see them posting cold smilies and their whimpers. We've had cold and snow since October...major snow that has stayed with us since the beginning of November. Old Man Winter is bound and determined to make us pay for getting off so lightly last year.

Currently 0C/32F here and heading up to a high of 4C/39F

Folks this winter is never ever going to end. :'(

Oh and I have those Texans (at the weather site) in my bad books...they actually invited Old Man Winter to North America (I told them they were FOOLS).

*sigh*
(snow does ease drought though and I am praying it has cooled the United States off enough this year that we won't have to face a summer from hell too).

28 but sunny.
Last year we had 4 days of 79 over St Patricks day weekend.
This year we are running 10 below normal most days.
Lots of fun yesterday. Not quite thawing temps, but sunny. So winds of 25 to 35 MPH from NW, blew snow onto roads & created slushy icey spots. Drivers didn't slow down, you can imagine the rest.
My daughters friend had to go to Sioux Falls. On the way home, he said cars & trucks were in the ditch every mile.
One place road was closed as they were trying to get a semi out of the center medium.

Kelli, I will trade you in a minute!

Bernie my husband hits the highway every single day and he took a pic yesterday of a semi that 180ed in front of him and another one is just starting to in the same pic.

Today he phoned and is stuck in traffic behind another one.

I'm not sure if I've ever linked to this video here but it's a wonderful introduction to what Canada looks like. It's also perfect timing to watch it since our rivers will be breaking up soon (I'm hoping spring does arrive eventually...though we want a very slow melt here):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=fUp2Xo-05os#!

I love the songs they embeded in it. The singer is from Ontario (I think) and he moved up to Nunavat and fell in love with our territories and chose to live there.

64 was the high today, windy, but nice and sunny. At least it isn't supposed to go below 40 tonight. I can't put my greenhouse sides back down because I have some wrens making a nest in the corner now. So can't freeze anymore here...the wrens have declared spring is here. ☺

Sunkissed I'd wait a little while if I was you...we still plan on sharing our cold for awhile yet.

Texans, who love growing plants, and anyone else in between here and there best take heed of that piece of news.

The Texan Met, who hates cold with a passion and who put my forecast up was praying all that cold would stay bottled up here (I'm thinking that won't be happening). He chose a model that has been often wrong this winter (deliberately I might add). They love to scare me but I'm sure Environment Canada's forecast for my area is right...we WILL have a warmup and for that to happen well our cold just has to go somewhere).

Alerts in effect for City of Regina
Snowfall Warning

Issued at 4:23 AM CST Saturday 16 March 2013
Details

A disturbance forecast to develop in the foothills of Montana tonight will track eastward into the Dakotas on Sunday. As the system advances eastward snow is expected to develop over Western Saskatchewan tonight and then intensify as it moves into Southeastern Saskatchewan on Sunday. Significant snowfall accumulations are likely with this disturbance with 15 to 25 cm possible over the southeastern corner of the province by late Sunday night. Elsewhere south of the Yellowhead Highway amounts of 5 to 15 cm are possible. In addition to the snow gusty northwesterly winds in the wake of the disturbance will create reduced visibilities in blowing and drifting snow. Winds are expected to increase over Southwestern Saskatchewan Sunday morning before moving into Southeastern Saskatchewan later in the day. Conditions throughout the region are expected to improve Sunday night as a cold Arctic ridge of high pressure pushes southward into the region.

Wind speed of 108 mph recorded at the summit of Mauna Kea this week from the jetstream. That's just over 12,000 ft. No wind at our level 2000 ft.

All highways have been closed down around Moose Jaw. Clipper hasn't arrived yet but boy did we have nasty winds last night. Wind speeds were clocked at 56 mph. We are now expected to be in the eye of the blizzard later today.

When husband shot the video I posted above we were getting winds from the South. He said that one bit of highway he felt safe using the camera. After that the winds picked up and there were icy sections. Today it is a skating rink out there and to top it off we also got a system from Montana last night that brought rain to some areas.

If our Northern winds push back to what we received from the South yesterday there is going to be some really nasty weather on the United States side of the border later today and tomorrow (and I'm betting the cold will reach far).

Wow Lily, that is something to see, the winds look so strong and yet all the trucks and cars driving like it is nothing at all. Great share.

Our first day of spring brought us some nice thunderstorms, been awhile since I've heard good thunder. The hubs just finished some new gutters and put in a rain barrel. My barrel is now 2/3 full of some good rain water. Our drought season will be coming as soon as Lily stops sending us these cold weather fronts.

They say up to 70 today, but doubt it since temps have dropped since we got up. Predict 46 tonight as the low.

Snow has fallen, snow is currently falling, snow is forecasted to fall.

We now hear adverts on the radio sponsored by Mrs. Winter informing us that it is all the Old Man's fault, she has nothing to do with it.

We had a Via Passenger train, from Vancouver, stuck and buried somewhere out on the plains of Saskatchewan for 25 hours but it is now on its way to Toronto. Something that the passengers will be telling their grandchildren about I'm sure.

Saskatchewan, North Dakota and Manitoba are going to have some pretty bad flooding (unless we head straight into the winter of 2013/14 which wouldn't surprise many here).

You can send some of that snow this way. It will melt and turn to rain. We've only had 7 inches of rain since last fall.

How we'd love to send 1/2 your way. 7 inches of moisture to come in a very short time (ie melt) is not going to be good news for this valley city (downstream it is going to be really, really bad...look out North Dakota and Manitoba).

The flood forecast for northern MN isn't good. The snow pack there is the same as a 6 to 8 inch rain. That is a lot of water.
Our snow here is about gone. 20 miles north, the fields are all covered.

Currently getting hit with a mix if it hasn't changed over to snow already. Still expecting 6-8 inches of snow by the time it all ends tomorrow night.

I-70 is closed between Denver and KC already. Winds are pretty strong and conditions will be similar to last 2 storms. And the snow will be really wet and heavy so people will have a hard time shoveling their driveways and sidewalks.

No weather to report. Its kind of benign. Little or no wind, a few light showers, some high cloud which makes it dull at times and them some breaks with filtered sun. Temp ranges between 60 at night and 70 in the daytime. No complaints. Looks like this will go on for another week. Lots of good gardening weather.

Some severe storms went through the Orlando area yesterday afternoon as the cold front line went through. Lots of damage, big trees down and airplanes flipped, many still without power this morning. But they're still trying to determine if it was a tornado. My friend in Orlando that lost three big trees says it was and doesn't give a hoot what the weather people say.
March is our month for tornadoes in Central FL. We just got a lot of wicked lightning and gust of wind here at our house thank goodness, trimmed the dead branches out of the oaks.

Gonna drop down again a couple nights to low 40's, but no 30's in the report...so that is okay.

I enjoy the snow pictures you post Lilypon, reminds me of the year we lived in Maine when I was a kid. Dad was stationed their at Loring AFB. It snowed the whole 8 months we lived there, even in May.

I must say I am jealous to some degree of all of the precipitation, but I'll take it as rain, not snow. When I was a kid growing up in PA, I was told that there are places where it never snowed. I didn't believe it. Now I live there.

Calling for a high of 77F today then will cool down a little. Tiny chance it will rain later in the week.

Canoga Park was originally called Owensmouth. How's that for a strange name? Later it was named after Canoga, New York, and I have absolutely no idea why. But at least it sounds better than Owensmouth. My neighborhood can also be called West Hills, which I think is kind of blah, so I usually stick with Canoga Park.

Actually, cactus are not part of the natural flora in this immediate area. It has been my observation that cactus grow where there are two rain seasons, a winter and a summer. (That is the regime of the North American deserts.) In my area, we only have the winter rainy season, so cactus area naturally found only near the coast where summer fog fills in for summer rain. Canoga Park is too far inland to get summer fog. It appears that the original flora for the area was grassland with scattered trees.

Those in the know in Texas are saying they will be getting another blast of cold from us in next week.

The newest write up from The Weather Network:

Record low temperatures in Saskatchewan Monday

Staff writers

March 26, 2013 First heavy snow, now record cold temperatures. It's the winter that keeps on giving in parts of Saskatchewan.
Don't miss...

Alerts
Officials preparing for potential spring flooding in southern Saskatchewan
Deadly spring storm hits the Prairies

Nunavut enjoys record warmth for two days in a row

On Monday, several communities across southern and central Saskatchewan set new record low temperatures.

Places like Kindersley and Assiniboia saw temperatures dip close to -25C, beating previous daily record lows set more than 15 years ago.

"Spring this year in Saskatchewan and Manitoba is like a car with a dead battery," tweeted The Weather Network's Chris Murphy early Tuesday. "It just won't seem to start."

Meanwhile, for the past two days, Resolute, Nunavut has reached new record warmth with temperatures hovering around -10C.

"Only for three months, June to August, do average daytime highs usually climb above 0C there," adds Murphy.

Volunteers needed for making sandbags

"A warming trend is on the way for the Prairies, with temperatures expected to rise later this week," says Gerald Cheng, a meteorologist at The Weather Network.

That's great news for those with Easter long weekend plans, but it also has flood forecasters on high alert.

With significant snowfall recorded this winter and warmer temperatures just around the corner, residents are taking action.

Over the weekend, thousands of people in Saskatchewan were busy shovelling snow away from the foundations of their homes.

Moose Jaw's emergency measures organization is also gathering a list of volunteers for making sandbags.

Co-ordinator Rod Montgomery says a volunteer list will help the city muster people if flooding occurs.

No special process was made on my pics Juhur7. ;o)

Those frosty sights I treasure. So rare and what an incredible gift for our winter weary eyes. Today was very nice but I've heard from a met in North Dakota, a couple of days ago, that it won't remain this nice. :'( Here's what his crystal ball(s) were telling him:

"Long range GFS/GEM/Euro are having severe issues run to run in the April 3rd-10th period in if the keep the blocking pattern and thus us colder than normal thru the 10th of April or not. GFS model seem to be warmest but flip flips a lot more than the Euro which tends to be better. Right now the Euro last night (I worked a mid) is showing more below average temps for srn Sask after a brief warm up late this week...GFS is showing some snow chances as well in the 5th-10th period. I do fear that one the blocky pattern breaks down it could go quite mild all of a sudden but it may take mid month. The latest NAEFS North American Ensemble Forecast System does keep the most below normal temps more so from southeast Sask and thru the upper Midwest of the states into the Great Lakes."

80 and partly cloudy! We sure could use some rain! I think it's moving this way. The counties around us are under a severe thunderstorm watch...so maybe we will get some of it eventually! It's really muggy out.

Edited to correct the temp...News said it was 80. We did get rain. Thank you Lord!

Partly cloudy now with increasing winds a rain and snow mix for in the morning with a high of 40 degrees , weather is being "fun" again. Then we get 20 degrees after 60 degrees today ,, What planet is this ?
