| it's been a LONG several months and I am sorry not to have been participating. I'll catch you up a little with goings on in Indiana. Tried to post a couple of pictures recently, but DG and my server haven't been cooperating with one another.
We lost Sophie unexpectedly about a month ago. She was the Mom of our last litter and only 4 1/2 yrs old. I didn't like the way she looked one Saturday and decided to take her to the Emergency vet. As we were pulling into the parkinglot, she had a seizure and never recovered. Her heart rate dropped, she was given Atropine, then her blood pressure hit the ceiling. After two more seizurs, she stopped breathing. The vet thought that something was going on in her brain as her labs and everything else were normal.
Our Florida home is still not sold, which has been a burden to support the two houses. There are so many foreclosures in my County that we can't compete with the prices being asked, even getting into short-sale range, and we bought the house before the housing bubble started. So, we are deciding if we should keep the payments going at this point.
I love my job and what a reduction in stress with it. So, that's been a plus. And my SO's business is keeping him busy. I'm studying to get certified as a DOT (Department of Transportation) provider. Have been doing DOT certifying exams for 17 yrs now, but the DOT has developed a specific certification coarse and exam that all providers will have need to pass come 2014 to be able to provide the services. So that's been taking up my precious little sewing time. But have a front half-finished for a friend who broke her hip falling off a ladder while washing her RV. By the time I get it done, she'll probably be healed.
Anyway, more later. Gotta get back to work. Miss you all. |

I've still not found the time to get over to the other side to meet folks. I'm hoping to get down to Mittsy before she heads North.
You are missed!!!! Plse find time to stop in more often. |

Good for you that you're half finished the quilt top for your friend - what a good friend you are! Would love to see the finished product (your end of it, anyway!) |

| So sorry to hear about Sophie, It's so hard with pets, they can't tell us what's wrong and it's their nature not to show they are sick.
Sure know the agony of trying to sell a home. We had a buyer and had made a deal on another when our buyer backed out. So back to square one.
Good luck with the DOT Certification, we're all pulling for you. Sure hope you can get back to playing with us, we miss you. |

Chilly start for the 1st day of Spring. Need to move some dirt this AM then a friend & are are going to check out some "3/$10" plants at a roadside plant place that popped up last week. Then to HD to see if they got a mulch delivery today. Think I'll start with 10 pieces and about as many stepping stones.
Finished that BRIGHT scrappy top yesterday. Will post a pic later. I had fabric for a border but now that the top is done, don't think I want the 2nd border. Wish I'd realized that sooner would have made the 1st border a bit wider. My friend did it in pastels w/grey for the babies & this BRIGHT one barely looks like the same pattern.
Cinnamon's passing was so fast & unexpected that I really could not even talk about it for the 1st month. We are amazed how Pumpkin has taken over as "head cat" since his passing, just as Cinn took over when we lost Coco. Pets are such amazing "friends". |

| Jean, did add the link for you..
Sorry about Cinnamon's passing as well..my kitties sure did grieve the loss of Sailor (Border Collie)..she passed last fall and I still see signs of grieving.
Snowing this morning but won't amount to anything.
Sketched the plain block of the Periwinkle quilt which is formed when sewing blocks together..so quiet at work thought I would just surf the web for a quilting design that will fill the area..that shouldn't take too long then I'll knit a bit.
Knitting snowmobile dickie's for the boys..I make them with wool and deer hyde..wind/cold cannot penetrate the hyde..boys were joking at Christmas, told me that I had better stockpile them so that when I leave this earth they will still have access to them as I'm the only one who makes them..kids, got to love them..so this Christmas guess what they will get lol
Standard christmas talk (they love to fuss and joke) is how one brother gets more than the other, never any truth to it so a few Christmas's ago I kept all receipts and I was within a few $$$..when all gifts were opened I handed one an envelope with change making up the difference. |

| Qwilter... sorry for your loss. It's never easy. But it IS amazing how the surviving pets respond. There is grief experienced. My Grandmother lived with us for a good while and when she passed, our Chihuahua Chico, who was attatched to her, laid on her slippers for over a month.
Well, the groundhog wasn't right... still winter here with temps maxing at 30 F. But I am told that 'safe' planting time is Mothers' Day. I planted over 100 tulips this past fall, not having been able to grow them for 30 yrs. Have plans in my head for the yard already... almost 2.5 acres with part divided by a little drainage creek. Just getting used to the 5b zone moving from 9a. |

| Pets do indeed grieve. We had Babe a black lab who was quite a bit older than Ginny a golden retriever. When Babe passed on, Ginny moped for weeks. I brought home a mini dachshund puppy that made Ginny snap out of it. In fact Oscar simply wouldn't leave her alone, she had no choice but to play. Oscar had the same thing when we lost Ginny to a stroke. That's how we got Molly. She's black lab and golden mix, solid black with long silky fur of a golden. |

| We got Cinn & Spice when we lost Pineapple to keep Coco company. Pumpkin had come to live with us when we lost Spice and DH said "3 cats were enough". We got Shaleigh when we lost Coco a few years ago for the same reason. Cinn & Pumpkin needed a "boost". I haven't been looking but have an idea of what the next cat will look like. I figure I'll know it's the right one when I see it.

| Ironing is one of my least favorite activities.
In Sep a friend purchased a Bali Pop and pattern so I could make her a purse. Then I looked at the directions. Each of the strips needs to be ironed in 1/2 lengthwise then each of the raw edges ironed in to meet in the center. Every time I think I'll work on it, something funner comes up. Well, I really do need to get his purse made. So DH is watching TV shows so I lowered the ironing board & have been sitting & ironing the strips. It's been over an hour and I think I'm just 1/2 done... ironing is so NOT fun!!!!! |

| No, these raw edges fold in toward the center fold. I put my stuff away. I have 10 strips left to do but OMG - how boring!!!!!
then I have to cut thin strips of batting and fold those into the fabric, then zig-zag the long edges together... |

| Oh Jean... did your friend (OR YOU) have any clue how big a pain the patootey this was gonna be??
When I get asked to do a nasty job like that, I TRADE my time, "I will iron while you... for me" I'm afraid otherwise I would be overrun with requests I can't meet!! Like many of you have said before, many people do not know the TIME and EXPENSE that goes into what they are asking for. |

| Jean - check out a clover tool that will do that and you iron it as it comes out of the tool . Does all the folding for you. I think they are for making bias strips but the folding is the same and I think it may work!!. |
taters55 (Linda Kay) Del Rio, TX (Zone 9a)
March 21, 2013 1:47 PM Post #9457257

It used to seem so romantic or feminine or something (?) in old movies when a woman would be hanging laundry and singing. Its all I can do to keep my whits about me with just my husband around, but all the kids are around and some of their friends too, tonight. Im about to come unglued. Luckily they are all going to OZ at 8. Im off to make them some creamed chicken in patty shells and then pray for 730 when they leave. I love them, but sometimes I just want a little time not having everyone wanting something. I dont get to see the girls all that often so Im trying to just enjoy that.

I love both of your quilts Stu. I'm sure your nephew is thanking you many times over for the flannel since we had such a cold winter and now are having such a long time waiting for spring to arrive. I'm thinking he really loves it now!!!!
What size squares did you use for the "thank you" quilt? Looks like a great pattern to use for our 5" square swaps...I love the design - the look is traditional but new at the same time...
Great job on both!!!! |

| Thanks all. And Psych, I get inspired by Q shows and by the Qs hung in LQSs.
Barb, I used 5" batik charm packs separated into warms ( orange, red, brown, deeper or bright purples, etc.) and cool (blue, green, muted purples). I used a central dark color and then a bit lighter on the corners and lighter still between. Then cut the block on a diagonal and sewed a cool to a warm. If you alternate the positions of the finished blocks (cool to cool, etc, then flipped for the next row)' it gives the diagonals. It's interesting how the corners line up ( or don't), but that gives straight lines on the diagonals. Actually, I discovered the overall pattern by accident, trying to do something different with the charms and wanting to use a nine patch.

| They had a silent auction for over 250 items... I'd be embarrassed to say how many I bid on!!! I'd never been involved in a silent auction so it was a new experience I bought a WHOLE big black garbage sack full of stuff!! It was all I could do to get it to the car it was so heavy. I'll try to post some pictures later of my booty. Ohhhhhhh and the vendors!! oh ya, collected a few business cards... this trip will continue to cost my husband for weeks and months!! LOL
And most especially I enjoyed my time with Carrie. We have not had any time alone and it was so good to get to know her better. She's going to come to my house for a weekend and learn to sew... a new addict in training! Yahooooooooo! |

Pam, saw some pictures last night of the festival...doesn't look as full or have they spread it out farther? We had hard rain starting at 9 yesterday and didn't stop raining until around 11 this morning. I can handle the rain but the storms with it were horrible. Notices of more river flooding in the area. Will need to get the long sleeves out again this week as we are predicted to be in the low 60s with one day in the upper 50s. Oh well, typical just before Easter.
Betty, enjoy your vacation and soak up some sun BUT be careful of sun burns!!!!!

They acknowledge that yes they were all, even Husqvarna district managers that warrantee would be honored in Canada..not so..feel mega problem with machine so they are having same machine sent to their store from Hoolywood Florida so I can pick up on Tuesday providing of course head office approves..that being said still no warrantee in Canada..would have to take it for repairs in Buffalo..not the greatest but what can you do? |

Can't wait until she starts jabbering, then I can talk on the phone to her.

| Laurel - I can see the stitchery best on the 3rd pic and Boy are they lovely! on the quilt I'm doing now, I have mostly SID, but there are 2" strips going the length and width of the quilt that I will be hand quilting. Not sure what pattern, but I'm looking forward to it. I've done 23 of the 30 blocks, so it should be done in about 3 days. I may bind it before I do the strips, as I want to take it with me for the Easter Sunrise Service at 7am Sunday (1/2 hr) ... followed by a regular service at 10:30 am.
The 7am service is outside, up on a hill in our area of the city. It's awesome seeing the sun rise during our service (rises at 7:15 on that day). This will be our 3rd year doing this, and we sing during the actual rising. It's lovely. Weather is supposed to be nicer that day with the low of 2c (36F) and high of 11c (54F). We need to bring lawnchairs, blankets and coffee, as we'll be sitting most of the time for 1/2 hr... |

| There's lots more quilting to do on the piece, Barb & LK
Barb - it's from a swap that you & I were in - along with Elen from France, Pat (PhychW2), Pat (GardenGlory), Marion, Thunder, Cher, Janice, Michele (Syramani), Lucy (Jumper2), Sue (Lilypon), Sondra (Mojoquilter), and Kathy Kiz - 2009/2010.
And of course my yellow & green butterfly blocks.
I added all those "wonky" blocks I had of mine from when I was 20'ish, cuz I wanted a lap quilt size.
With 30 blocks (7 left to quilt - finishing about 3 per day), then the strips in between, I still have a ways to go. Once I have all the blocks quilted, I will post the pic. Then when I do the strips, I"ll post again - don't know what the pattern will be. Blocks are SID. |

| Been working on the customer's little girl quilt all afternoon. The quilt is just so cute I decided to do some ruler work outlining a lot of 2" sq pieces. Then shrunk a pano design to fit a 5" strip so i could have dolphins in the widest border. So top & bottom strips are done and all the small squares have been outlined. Need to change threads to work on the dolphin next so decided that was a good place to stop. Applique pieces can be so much fun to work on!!!! Will eventually have to take the quilt off & turn it sideways to get the side borders done. |

Im having an embarassingly hard time getting it out of my diet, I can drink tea for a couple of days, and then relapse right back to the coke. Cardiologist tells me to eat beans, which I love in salads or soups, but they are full of carbs. Give up red meat for the heart, add pasta and it turns to sugar. Its not an easy battle.

And of course, increasing exercise is also very important. Muscle mass uses the sugars differently. I can't eat just what Brian eats. I need the extra carbs/sugars so keep my stash. |

| Helene, so sorry to hear about you being sick. Understand about the UTI as mom is constantly fighting them.
This household also has to watch their diets...daughter is diabetic but we have managed to get it under control with some drastic changes in the way we eat...giving up banana was really hard for her. She recorded everything she ate for a 2 week period and it seems every time she has a banana her sugar would climb...easier not to have at all. Jean, bread was a shocker...especially the whole wheat. I didn't realize how much sugar was used making it.\
Cold here also...freeze warning for tonight. I want some sunshine and warmer weather please!!!! I did manage to work a few hours outside yesterday but it is just uncomfortable today so I will go visit my sewing machine. |

| Helene, I hope you are back to normal quickly, being sick sucks.
I got to witness some Instant Karma this morning. I had been waiting for 10 minutes for a parking space, someone finally came out and got in their car. I got in position to take the space . A pickup truck zipped into the space from the other end of the space. It was an outside end space. I let them know what I thought of them and drove back to wait some more. I noticed the truck kept moving back and forth. I got curious and went to get a closer look. They had the 1 hour parking sign post stuck between the bumper and body of their truck. I laughed at them and got a cop to help them. |

| Buy Glad press n seal, copy your pattern, run it through your machine without thread but with the biggest sewing machine needle you have (can do several at a time) then place where you want the pattern, use cornstarch or chalk and mark..if machine quilting just put pattern on piece pat down so no ripplesin it and sew through it..can then pull it off your piece |

| Pat - I just did the quilting. I don't applique!!!!!
Betty - you are heading north already?!?!!?!?!? You just got here.
Yes indeed, practice on some fabric before loading a quilt. It takes a bit of "thinking" to get used to moving the machine & not the fabric. And you need to get used to the "feel" of the tracks. Do you have a stitch regulator on the machine? If not, that also takes some practice. I took 1 yd pieces of some nice prints for my practice quilts. When done I serged the edges & donated them to a place that took in strays. |

| Yes, got home early this mornimg..not my wish but she has been there since December and anxious to get home, so anxious that we could only take time to gas, washroom, take out foot and hit the road..how is one suppose to shop at Joann's fabrics before crossing the border if it's 6:30am in the morning? Lol
Yes I do have a stitch regulator and laser..thought I might go downstairs and use two top sheets as backing and top and just play ...decided not today!
been outside working, (sunshine to welcome me home) lots of spring cleaning, branches, spent a few hours picking p branches/tree limbs, did a burning in the pit..load of wash, load in dishwasher..cleaned off front deck so I can set up table set, sun on front desk most of the day..afraid if I sit down I will call asleep and there will go Easter.

| Had a good Good Friday service at our church.
We all wrote things that pained us (initials of someone who we wanted to reconcile with, etc) on a red slip of paper, and then the pastor, another member and I put these on an 8' tall cross made of pine that we have in our Sanctuary. We covered it with red slips of paper, so the Cross looked covered in red...
We'll have a Sunrise service on a hilltop, Sunday at 7am. Sun rises at 7:13.
It's supposed to have a trace of rain & snow that day, with a low of -1c.
If it's inclement weather, we'll go back to the Church.
I finished my lap quilt!! It's the first time I've bound a quilt, so I'm really pleased.
I'm going to take it on Easter morning, as it will be Really cold at 7am...

| yes, those are blocks from 2009/2010 DG swap. The butterfly ones at the top right and left were my contribution (I made another one so I would have enough).
The "other" ones were those I made in my 20's, when I was learning how to cut blocks. 'fraid they were pretty wonky, but I refuse to throw things away, and nor did I want to re-do them... I wanted to put all of my experiences in this one. Now it's done, and I know how to do bindings, I'm pleased.
The signature blocks are from: Pat (GardenGlory), Pat (PsychW2); Thunder, Barb, Lucy (Jumper2); Elen (from France); Michele (Syramani); Janice, Kathy Kiz; Cher; Marion; Sue (Llilypon); and Sondra (Mojoquilter). |

| Frost on the ground here, patches of snow act as a reminder that we could get another storm but heck I'm just so anxious to see it behind me that I'm bound I will at lease clean the 3 decks, get the cafe and settle sets out so that if we do get sunshine I will have a place to sit..2 of 3 are almost completed so that will be my project of the day..do wish I could rake and start the gardens but remover their winter blanket of leaves would do damage so I must be patient..about 3 weeks work to get the outside in order so I'm not quite sure why I'm excited about taking it on.
Will run into town..could use a haircut, Easter treats for the family and groceries..at some point I must find time to play a bit with seeing/quilting! |

| Happytail... Well earned congrats. Beautiful work.
Pat... Feel better soon.
Quilter... Love the fish motif
Tallulah... Great warmer-up. And perfect way to use it. The red binding really frames it well.
Finished quilting (finally) a large lap Q for a friend who fell off a ladder washing her motor home. She's a dog friend. It's taken long enough that she'll probably be dancing with the stars by the time I bind it, but will try to get that done tonite. Then making a lap for a co-worker that had surgery and is getting chemo for breast cancer. I bought a set of charms and a layer cake on eBay very inexpensively. I really like the set - Cinnamon and Spice - but knew that it would make a nice Q for her with a D9P. I found some more charms on Etsy at a decent price so bought all 11, some for me and some for a later project. That's one pitfall of buying sale and clearance fabrics--- they're usually discontinued. Will post the former after the binding is on.
PS... My SO and I named the Q for our friend ' Humpty Dumpty'. He embroidered the name and my signature on the back.
