I never thought much about it before, but we humans really are very dependent on seeds, aren't we.

Yes, in their many forms. The fascinating part (to me) is how and when did we first get the idea that we could save seeds of the plants we really liked?

I know, but to me planting particular seeds and not planting other, less desirable seeds is a big mental leap.
