recently acquired this interesting plant. Could someone tell me what it is?

that is the Hummel creation: Crassula argentea 'Gollum'. It was created long before "Schrek".

I think this is just Crassula ovata Gollum. Or has this cultivar been moved to another species?

Bob is correct; it is C. ovata now.

It would seem that C argentea and C portulacea are both considered synonyms for C ovata
