Can this include nest identification?

Fayette, IA(Zone 4b)

My husband found this nest on the ground yesterday while mowing. He thinks it might have been made from an old baseball - minus the covering. Then there are beads of mud daubed on the inside back. It is a very firm nest, which would go along with the baseball idea - but how would a bird do that? He assumed it had blown down from a tree, but that may not be the case. Any ideas?

Well, you are right about it being a baseball - possible turned inside-out
But I am not sure about which bird - I guess some wrens will use weird things for nests

Thanks, pollengarden. I had just about giving up on getting any answers. I guess it will remain a mystery.
