What kind of bird is this?

I saw this bird while walking in Wild Wood NJ last year. The coloring is dark blue almost black.

It's a Tree Swallow. One of the several varieties of North American Swallows.

Swallows spend much of their time in the air and catch their food "on the wing".

I think you'll enjoy the site. It's by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and one I use regularly. You can look up a huge variety of birds and see pictures, listen to their songs, and read about their habits.

that is a very cool site.
