There are so many insects that are beneficial and depending on where you live, you may or may not have them in your area. Then there are insects like the Hawkmoths that are good pollinators, but their caterpillars are destructive. So it is a judgement call. The best thing you can do is before you destroy an unknown insect, try to get it identified. Our Insect Identification forum is a great place to start and we have some excellent experts who can usually pin a name on something and tell you whether it is harmful in just a short time. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/bugid/all/
