Happy New Year, gang!

According to the newspaper, this has been the driest year since 1877. (That's 18, not 19.) If we would get a good rain here, it would warm up in the Midwest and East. It nearly always works that way.

Currently 42F . They're calling for a high of 78F. You'll see it all on the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl game.

Happy New Year.

During the storms we had from Sunday thru Tuesday one area 2 miles above Hilo had 20+ inches of rain. Hilo had 11 inches. Hilo airport broke a one day rain record going back to 1951.
We are 18 miles up slope from Hilo and had 2 inches. The storms just sat over Hilo town and the coast road for two days. Nice day today with southerly winds bringing VOG to our area. More heavy rain forecast for Friday and again Sunday or Monday. 70f at 10am.

We did on one of our old trucks that is 2 wheel drive. But all the ones that are licensed now are 4 wheel drive except for my mom's car which isn't but doesn't need chains either. Frankly if it's just snow and not ice we get plenty of traction and we curse the graders when they come down our road because they mess it up. lol

In the mountains around here, chains are required if it snows. I put chains on a car one time. I don't know how a person does it without getting dirty. It was worth it to see the sequoias in the snow, though. Wish I had a digital picture to show you but that was way back in the days of film.

It's hard to report Hawaiian Weather amid all those cold cold temps and beautiful photos of snow.

Clear sunny day, light southerly winds, great weather to cut the grass. 75f

Weather system just reaching Kauai as predicted with moderate winds and moderate to heavy showers. Moving East at 20 mph. The rain will move down the island chain tonite and tomorrow. It will stall just East of the Big Island (our home). On Sunday an upper level trough will come over the island and cause the system just East of us to move back giving us thunderstorms and the potential for heavy flooding rains. Remember some areas had 10-20 inches of rain earlier this week so ground is already water logged.

At least its not snow.

Side note - very slow moving lava flow is burning forest about 9 miles south of us. Must check to make sure there is some high ground between us and there. Kilauea has been erupting continuously for 31 years today. Check out Hawaii volcanoes National Park for Kilauea updates given daily.

Talk about Spanish Influence, I was in St. Augustine, the oldest city with my girl friends over New years for a few days, was misty the whole time there, but we still enjoyed ourselves with umbrellas over our heads.

Yesterday cloudy and never got above 49, today sunny warming to 70, tomorrow up to 80, then Monday over eight hours below freezing and down to 27...the poor garden won't know what hit it after these very warm days.

If it would rain out here, it would warm up in the East and Midwest. It has to do with how the jet stream moves around. Right now it is totally ignoring us and you are getting your weather from the north instead of from the south. Current jet stream map http://classic.wunderground.com/US/Region/US/JetStream.html

This winter reminds me of the late '70's and early '80s when we had some cold weather and a lot of snow days in PA.

Weather liars claim -28 wind chill. Bunk!
Sun is shining bright. Why not have a sun-warm. It would be above zero in the sun.

I was in Pine River, MN back in about 1962.
Actual temp was -47.
Let me tell you that is one heck of a lot colder than -47 wind chill.
You could freeze instantly. Wind chill gives you 5 minutes.
No way you could stand actual -47 for 5 minutes because you didn't dare breath.

Lily, what are your takes on this ?

The -47F actual temp is for sure a lot deadlier (one can look for shelter out of the wind) but either one will kill you quick enough if you are out wandering around out there. Its been a number of years since I last felt that cold an actual temp (was trying to remember if we were at that when the movie *Just Friends* with Ryan Reynolds was being shot here. I know the windchill then was colder than what we are currently having. A very well sheltered spot in the daytime, with the sun out, can be toasty warm at -30F but when the actual -40's come its just plain nasty.

An ex Texan lives up here and is attached to my FB. He got stuck last night when the windchill was at -47 (he is very, very, very grateful re the lady that picked up him and his passengers).

Oh how I'd love to send you some of our cold in exchange for your warmth Kelli (but our air is so dry now). :S

lilypon -35 is about as cold a temp fr any time that I have ever been in . It froze my hair through and my hair fell off (around my face and ears )
As you were saying , be careful , and those temps are Dangerous , more than can be expressed for those who have never been in them ,,
30 second skin damage is possible and such . Like the opposite of the hour or three hour mummy in the desert when someone falls there ..
That is scary ,, !!!

Cloudy, light N, NE breeze. Temperature has not gone above 64f.
Weather guys do not know what to predict for next four days. Upper level cold air drifting down from NW may destabilizing atmosphere and create heavy rain and thunderstorms but atmosphere at low level is dry. Its any body's guess.
Mainland temps are unbelievable. I do not understand or watch US Football but will turn on the TV to see what the Green Bay game looks like. It should have been postponed if its too cold for the ref. to blow his whistle.

Great picture Pepper! Those cardinals sure stand out in that snow.

Thank goodness it didn't get as cold as they predicted here, woke up at 3:30AM and still was 40, I rested easy after that. We have many wonderful tropical plants that we don't want to see zapped to the ground, so we protect with covers. Some years all the protection does nothing but we still try our best to keep them going year after year. South FL doesn't have to worry about this, North FL just doesn't plant them. :-)

Temps dropped to 34 after sunrise and now at 11AM it is 39, but we are climbing back up now. Mr. Sunshine...I love you! They said 29 for four plus hours.

A tropical vine of Mexican sunflowers hanging over the fence, I took yesterday. It will freeze if we go down to 32, but always comes back in the spring.

The weather guys cannot get it right. The thunderstorms and heavy rain never happened. The weather systems that were to pass over the islands just faded away. There were some showers around but they were difficult to find. At our house it stayed sunny and breezy and cold. Last night went down to 55f. This morning at 8.15 its still below 60 with a cloudless sky and the sun streaming through the window. Historically January is known as our driest month and it looks like it might be true again this year. Have to keep an eye on our catchment tank

I see everybody is thawing out. 70 this morning with 94% humidity, yep, the AC went back on last night. up to 80 today. The only reason the AC is on is because the floors are wet from the humidity and we are sliding around...poor dog.

This is cool...or should I say "COLD"...Ice balls on Lake Michigan...

The Chumash Indians (a local tribe) had a story. Every night, the supernatural beings Sky Coyote and Sun would play a game something like dice. On the Winter Solstice, the scores were totaled up. If Sun won, he demanded his winnings in the form a human lives and it would be a dry year. If Sky Coyote won, it would be a wet winter and his winnings would be in the form of good things to eat, which he shared freely with mankind. It looks like Sun won this past year. (Interesting that in this hot climate, Sun is considered a cruel god.)

Fascinating story Kelli and I often think of the sun that way re cruel god. Too hot in the summer (some years) and come winter he teases us with his fire (often with sun dogs nearby) that we never feel in the dead of winter.

CG...Our county closes school for MLK day on Monday, but I did notice they have a four day weekend in Orange Co. for the holiday. Maybe the kiddos get a five day holiday there???

That is a shame about Direct TV stopping the weather channel...but you should still get it on computer. I use Accuweather.com most the time.

LOL @ CountryGardens wondering why the schools are closed.

Glad to read you won't be having to shovel too much snow BillyPorter! (though you might be wishing? for more?). Husband is now currently outside doing a tour of our yard. ;)

Sunkissed I spent the day inside so not bad for me (was thankful I didn't have to go to work). Sure was ugly for those that did haveto go outside (especially in Edmonton and Saskatoon). They have lots to clean up re broken trees, shingles off roofs, etc. today. Also saw a lot of road signs destroyed so it did indeed look like a hurricane went through.

Enjoy your weather MicRob (you are truly spoiled this year).

Oh Kelli I really wonder what measures California will be using to deal with the drought shortly.

Models showing nasty, nasty, nasty Arctic and Siberian cold making a comeback sooner than originally forecasted now.

All models are pointing to another Canadian winter of old (ie my childhood's winters that have made me fear every upcoming winter).

Now the models may be wrong but my spidey Canadian winter senses tell me they will probably be right, so if you heat your house by coal or oil and get them delivered I'd truly consider making sure you have your order in soon (if you are in need of more).

If you live where your pipes need wrapping and they haven't been this is the time to consider (strongly) having that done.

If you live anywhere in the warmer areas of the United States and have prize plants you'd like to save start thinking about how you are going to do that.

The models that the Canadian mets are placing their money behind say we are going to be paying a lot for any food that comes from Florida and deep South Texas (winter wheat also at risk). The fellows in Texas, at the forum I post at, are also getting very worried right now (I think they really don't want my cold...at least not with Siberia thrown into the mix).

Beautiful day today. Light tradewinds, white fluffy clouds drifting across a blue sky, just getting over 70f. The tradewinds have blown the VOG away for a couple of days. Took a walk around the forest trails this morning and looked at the orchids, anthuriums, bromeliad all growing among the tree ferns and Ohia trees. Bullfrogs plunged into the ponds as I approached.

35ft waves forecast for North Shore tomorrow. A number of homes are threatened with erosion. Owners have been stacking sandbags and bulldozing sand berms against the foundations to try and save the properties. Even higher waves forecast for middle of next week and some predict all the hard work will be destroyed over the next 10 days.

Billyporter - VOG (Volcanic Fog) does stay out of the house. Its not so much a smell but when you go outside you taste the sulphur. Asthma sufferers stay in doors and if its really bad folks wear masks. Seen it so bad sometimes cars drive with headlights - A few years ago the county put up lighted messages alongside the road warning drivers to roll up their windows due to high sulphur levels.

Dealing with very strong winds here (40+ sustained) and occasional snow bursts. Under wind advisory until midnight tonight.

I went to dog park with my dog neice today and refused to walk the trail around the lake with the wind howling like it is. Abbie, the dog, wasn't too happy with me but it wasn't worth fighting the wind and the cold.

34 This morning, but I'll take that over 20's any day, plants are hanging in there so far. up to 65 and sunny today, but another cool front coming tomorrow but they say only down to 38.

Waiting for it to warm to 50 and I'll take my pooch for a walk, she loves this cold weather, but as you can see by her picture, she is polar bear...and as big as one.

Kelli that is an awesome looking aloe, I have a thing for succulents, comes from being raised in Calif. I'm sure.

Mike, I would love to walk in a forest looking at orchids, sounds so enchanting.

Marabelle aka: Bear, we got her this summer as a ten month old pup (65lbs. then) she was a give back, got too big for the family that had her, but she is one of the most awesome dogs I've ever had.

Drove to work this morning with clear blue sky, mountain tops visible and able to see the white domes of the telescopes on the 12,000ft summit. Just enough breeze to blow away the VOG. Clear blue ocean. Almost no horizon as sky was same blue as ocean. Humid. 4pm 80f - too hot to garden for long

Beautiful moon last night with moon shadows. Almost light enough to do gardening. Down to low 60s. Must try and take photos

Looks like it is going to be cool (er cold for them) in the East for quite awhile yet. We have a warm up coming Friday/Saturday and models right now are showing the cold dropping right down close to Texas. Though between now and our predicted warm up we will have more cool weather come back (I just can't call this weather cold now...the -30's and -40's deserve that).

Those clippers sure aren't going to go away any time soon (though today it is relatively calm here for a change). Now just after typing that I see my ponderosa dancing a bit but nothing like it has been. I'm sure glad we had a stretch of above freezing weather not long ago as it has slowed down the blowing snow around here considerably (our snow has a nice crust on it now).

Its cloudy today and 18F (predicted to head up to 21F).

Sure hope you get a good rain soon Kelli! Pretty scary there considering California's population is greater than Canada's. I feel bad for the people and the wildlife there (re wildlife the loses must be horrendous by now going by the pictures you've shown us of the creeks and ponds there).

True, it's going to be cold tomorrow and better Friday here. I think we've had more wind than usual over the past few years.

Pepper,
I wish we could keep a snow cover too. At least we have melt and not evaporation.

We have a piddling amount of snow compared to what we should have. We did get the last inch cleared yesterday. He used the snow blower and I did the shoveling. I got the bird feeders filled and we were done by 7:30 am. I came in, got on the treadmill and then made cabbage soup. Good soup! Now we are getting a barely snowing snow...

From temps I've seen I'm not sure if the citrus trees were hit hard in Florida or not???? Normally we see a lot on the news about what's been lost but this time round I haven't heard anything.

Thanks BillyPorter re my avatar pic (I too love the colours :) but the water is a reminder of the bad flooding we've had a couple times now). This spring we will do fine however since its Central and Northern Saskatchewan that's being clobbered.

"March 15 might be end of winter."

Citrus are fine, they are south of me and so far we've not had but one or two nights that reached 32 as the low...strawberries okay too, you know they all need a bit of this cold for that sweetness. Don't think the next three nights will hurt either.

The latest storm front gave Oahu some strong damaging winds and waves on Wednesday were said to be almost 50ft. Really monsters. Too rough for surfers but tourists loved it. Highest waves in at least 10 years. Calming down to 15-20ft for the rest of the week.
Once again the rain and winds passed us by. Now we are dry (not like CA) but I do have to check our catchment tank. No real rain forecast for at least another week. Back our benign weather. A few clouds, light winds and cooler than normal temps.

Thought I would share what the road looks like outside our home. Please note NO SNOW! I planted the tall evergreens 20 years ago. Our property line (1300 ft) extends as far as you can see to the highway, not visible in the distance. I trim the grass about three times a year. Slowly winning the battle to get it short all the way to the highway. One neighbor a little way down on the left. Otherwise no homes on this street. Tranquil, private and sometimes a little scary with the strange folks that live in these remote parts.

The second pic was taken from our bedroom window last week

Long-term droughts have ocurred in the past in California, prior to the instrumental record:

Through studies of tree rings, sediment and other natural evidence, researchers have documented multiple droughts in California that lasted 10 or 20 years in a row during the past 1,000 years -- compared to the mere three-year duration of the current dry spell. The two most severe megadroughts make the Dust Bowl of the 1930s look tame: a 240-year-long drought that started in 850 and, 50 years after the conclusion of that one, another that stretched at least 180 years.

Stine, who has spent decades studying tree stumps in Mono Lake, Tenaya Lake, the Walker River and other parts of the Sierra Nevada, said that the past century has been among the wettest of the last 7,000 years.

Already, the 2013-14 rainfall season is shaping up to be the driest in 434 years, based on tree ring data, according to Lynn Ingram, a paleoclimatologist at UC Berkeley.

California drought: Past dry periods have lasted more than 200 years, scientists say - San Jose Mercury News

CG, in my opinion, I think that the weather people like to sensationalize the weather and make everything seem worse than it really is. (The proliferation of wind chill has helped the sensationalization a lot.) This brings in viewers, which brings in ads, which brings in money, which is the bottom line. No one is going to turn to the Weather Channel to watch 72F in California, but they do want to see a 'blizzard', whether is it a true historical blizzard or not. (BTW, we call it the East Coast Weather Channel, since CA apparently has no weather.)

Kelli - I support your opinion about the weather channel. Hawaii does not even exist.
Weather today - none - clear blue sky, little or no wind, little or no cloud.
Weather folks trying to get us interested in almost non existant weather front moving down the island chain today and tomorrow. "Slight" of heavy showers and thundershowers, right, like there is always a "slight" chance of and earthquake. But if we do get a shower they can say they warned us. Starting out at 60f and should reach 75f - boring.
Yes, Kelli, its all about the money and greed.
Just look at HGTV - The Lowes TV channel. What happened to the gardening guy and those other gardening programs. - They don't make money!
Why put wooden handles on rubber bucket wheelbarrows. Why not put solid tires on all wheelbarrows. They fail and you have to buy another one! I've created a wheelbarrow from parts of others - metal handles, rubber bucket and a solid tire. You can't buy one like that.
Ooops, must get off my soap box. Sorry weather people.

Here it was up here (not as bad because we had warm enough temperatures to form an ice crust on the snow...hence little blowing around):
[HYPERLINK@www.youtube.com]

Blizzard and blowing snow warnings have ended but windchill warnings remain for most of Manitoba

Wind chills between -40 to -45 tonight.

This is a warning that extreme wind chill conditions are imminent or occurring in these regions. Monitor weather conditions..listen for updated statements.

Winds continue to drop however there will still be some blowing snow this eve, however widespread blizzard conditions are over.

Colder air will be flooding in with temperatures near minus 30 overnight and combined with the wind will produce wind chill values near minus 40. Bitterly cold weather is expected to start the work week with temperatures well below normal

4,000 homes in Manitoba are without heat and facing temps in the -30's Celcius due to a Natural Gas pipeline explosion.

From the city of Grand Forks - Grand Forks City and County staff met with North Dakota Emergency Management and Xcel Energy officials on Sunday evening, January 26, 2014 to discuss the situation created by a natural gas explosion in southern Manitoba.

Xcel Energy has asked that customers with natural gas heating reduce their thermostats to 60 degrees to conserve fuel until further notice. Residents with electric heat, heating oil, propane or other forms of heat are not affected by the request.

Residents are reminded to keep safety in mind when using alternative heating sources such as portable space heaters. Always leave three feet of clearance from those heaters and keep flammable materials away from them. Also, avoid any open flame heating sources like lamps or candles, and do not use things like propane grills for indoor heating.

City offices will observe the conservation measures as well, and will conduct business as usual on Monday, January 27.

Today...Blustery. Mostly sunny. Northwest wind 15 to 25 mph with gusts to around 30 mph. Wind chill readings to 35 below.
Tonight...Mostly clear. West wind 5 to 10 mph. Wind chill readings to 30 below.

The wind blew, we barely got any snow and even tho it is cold, the sun is out. It's just under 0.

I'll be staying in. We have leftover pizza for dinner and I'm happy :o)

Have a good day all!

Nothing too new here. Still stuck in October mode. They are calling for a high of 75F. It wouldn't surprise me if it got windy since we had a wimpy system pass through yesterday (all clouds, no rain).

We could use more snow. All our fields are nearly bare. It was dry last fall so snow or rain would be welcome. Rain would be best.

I didn't know there was a weather thread...I came here to whine. LOL Local temp is -4, but sposed to be lots colder tonight. I think when you get to a certain point it's all relative. Cold is cold is cold, but when you have the blasted wind whipping around yet...

The Spousal Unit had to thaw out a cattle waterer again tonight...he's had to thaw them out every morning for the last 2 weeks. We're just hoping that he can keep them going till it straightens out, or we'll have to send the beasts back to the guy that owns them (and that will be a fiasco for the beasts, let me tell you...and no $$ for us either). He's hoping that doesn't happen.

I am SO glad we have wood heat...have an outside wood burner, plus a corn furnace too if there is a problem with the wood one. And if all else fails, an oil burner in the basement as a backup for the other 2.

He has LOTS more wood than that cut ahead!

We might have a chance of a couple inches of snow this weekend. I'll take it!! This is the driest winter I ever remember having. I'm used to snow off and on not bare ground more often than not.

Lilypon, I watched the snow blowing, that is just amazing, a snow hurricane...something to see the die hard truckers still driving in it, of course one was pulling into the Flying J.☺

Rained all day yesterday but temp dropped from 65 to 61f by the end of the day. Hilo town set a record one day rainfall for the day Jan. 28th of 3.77 inches (previously 1.39 inches in 1988. Also set a record for the lowest high temp for the day of 70f.

Rain stopped about 6pm. Thunderstorms never happened. Starry sky by this morning and just a few lingering heavy showers around the island today.

A few showers forecast for tomorrow and then another storm system forecast to move down the island chain again this weekend.

It's a good thing it doesn't snow here. Although a lot of people are from other states, I would imagine one forgets how to drive in snow, plus we have a lot of people from warm countries. Even though I come from PA, I never learned to drive in the snow.

Lightning offshore yesterday evening but it stay there and was not a problem. This morning it was beautiful - towering white clouds against a blue sky. This afternoon those clouds were joined by the heavy showers that got blown onshore from the south. At 4pm it really started to rain hard on and off. Looks like we will have a wet evening but no thunder.
Beautiful snow on Mauna Kea. If the cloud clears we will be able to see it.
Should be nice tomorrow with another system coming down the island chain this weekend.
