Palm ID, please
SOLVED: Palm ID
It looks to be a Roystonea, most likely the Cuban Royal Palm (Roystonea regia), a species very much at the edge of its climate range even in the warmest parts of NZ.
hortiphoto, thank you.
Yes, it does look like Roystonea regia
Another link with photo showing swollen trunk similar to your plant.
Yes, I'm now inclined to go with Ravenea too. When I sent my first message I wasn't aware that it was available in NZ. However, it appears that it now is and has settled in quite well from Auckland northwards.
Thank you for your expertise!
palmbob tells me "that's a Majesty palm... leaves are wrong (not plumose) and has no crownshaft (Royals have huge crownshafts... smooth green (usually) areas the leaves form around the top of the trunk before the leaves separate)"
This Majesty palm is growing at Waihi Beach near where I live.
Metrosideros, our messages crossed at the same time!
Your response was not there when I replied to hortiphoto's 1st reply.
Thank you again...
