Grits et al. Back home (sorry about this reference every time) we grow tomatoes in containers but remove the bottom of the plastic pot and place the container on top of soil or bury it in the soil. We used liquid fertilizer but made sure the soil in the pot was thoroughly soaked first so that the fertilizer did not burn the roots of the plant.
