SOLVED: Seed identification help

Georgetown, United States

I snapped a picture of an interesting seed on a hike in north central Texas. I should have done a better job of including more leaves, but I didn't. It seems like a small shrub. Any idea on what this could be?

Location: Meridian, TX, rocky, dry, wooded terrain.
Date: 9/11/17

Thanks very much!

Clematis. Probably not possible to ID the species without seeing flowers.

Thank you! It seems it is clematis texensis. You gave me a place to start.
