I've had this plant in my yard for three years, and I still don't know what it is. In July, it puts out little orange flowers on long stems with red hairs on them. The foliage looks like it could be in the arnica family. It tends to be invasive, and has grown out into my lawn. Does this photo ring a bell with anyone?...WZ

Looks like Orange Hawkweed. This site has a pretty good picture http://www.cariboord.bc.ca/CRD/Weeds/noxious_weeds.htm There's a yellow one too. It's a weed here... I have it growing all through my lawn. The seed heads are fluffy like a dandelion's and blow away in the wind.

Yes, I also agree - if it weren't for the hawkweed, there would be some bare spots in our yard. We also have the yellow flowered.

Thanks, guys for the info. I think you are probably right. The leaf looks right, though my long stemmed flowers tend to fall over. The puffy seedheads seem right, too. I had to laugh when I visited the website poppysue recommended. The picture looks so much sturdier and attractive than mine. I guess one person's weed is another person's exotic! I don't think there's any danger of it becoming a problem here, and as my old mother said..."If you mow anything long enough, it becomes lawn!"

Man, this weed gets around! From sea to shining sea. I talked to our Cooperative Extension Agent here on the Kenai Peninsula, and he said it has become a real problem in Homer (on the other side of the peninsula). Guess I'd better start cutting the seed heads off...I haven't got the heart to kill anything!...WZ

Would you send me a few of the seed heads? I would like to see if it will grow in the hot box of central Texas.

Aimee: Sure thing. I'll see if I have any onhand. If not, I'll collect some this fall. I haven't gotten into the seed swapping thing, so I'm going to suggest you send me your address by e-mail. I think you can access me by using my homepage. If there's a better way, let me know...meanwhile, I dig through my seeds...WZ
