The past week has really been a busy one down on this end of the bayou. Planting was in full swing until the rain
last night. We only got about a half inch of rain but about
6inches of lightning and thunder. Looked bad for awhile
with hail a possibility, but thankfully we missed that.
I have not put out any transplants yet. The ban on the use
of 2,4-D herbicide takes effect on the 15th, so no plants
out until then.
I am almost on schedule with seeding in the field, lacking
about 2 more good days.
My journal is out in the truck, so I will try to remember
what all I planted:
Provider and Blue Lake snap beans, Melody and Space spinach,
Bright Lights swiss chard, Florida Broadleaf and Savannah
mustard, White Lady and Purple Top turnips, Arugula, Red Russian Kale, Vates collards, Gourmet Allstar Lettuce mix
and Spicy Greens mix from Johnnys, Danvers 126 carrots,
Detroit Dark Red beets, LaSoda potatoes, Prelude II and
Destiny III yellow crookneck squash, Senator zucchini, Eight
Ball zucchini, Sunburst Pattypan and White Scalloped squash.
Also got in the second planting of sunflowers with some
extra long rows of Tiffany, Sunbright and a trial planting
of Strawberry Blonde and Sunsplash.
Another 400 glads were finished just ahead of the rain.
Three rows of glads that I had left in the ground from last
year are coming back after being cut down by the last freeze.
I had no idea that they would survive. They were abandoned
after getting flooded out last June. I gave them a shot of
fertilizer and maybe we will have some early glads.
I think the birds got some of the sunflower seeds so I may have to do some spot planting.
My first planting of sunflowers came up to a perfect stand ,and with the help of the sprinklers, survived 20 degrees. The first potatoes were just poking out yesterday.
So as you can see, we have been burning a lot of fuel and
making a lot of tracks on Mon Jardin.
