On another thread, Carol posted a number of questions about heirlooms. I figured they deserve a thread of their own, so have moved them up here.
My article has to be between 300-500 words. I figure it would be best to define heirlooms, their importance, which are known to do well in this area, as well as planting tips. When I visited the seed-savers site I could find prices, but I didn't see which zones they would do best in. Did I miss something? I'd hate to create an interest in heirlooms and folks would buy seeds that didn't do well, it would defeat the purpose of my article.
Some of my questions are and please excuse my lack of knowledge here: Can you plant heirlooms (excluding corn) next to hybrid plants? Would the pests go directly to the heirlooms instead? How well does organic gardening methods apply to heirlooms? Are heirlooms limited to flowers and vegetables? When did the major transision from heirlooms to hybrids take place? Was another reason for saving seeds due to the depression? I hope I haven't asked too many questions at one time. Thanks in advance. Carol
