This southern european plant has been recorded in gardens since 1300. It's downy leaves leaves look like lamb ear and was used by the medievals as candle wicks. The second season of its growth it produces a stalk with magenta flowers. It is a prolific reseeder. It is recorded in 1614 that a double form was discovered and by 1835 in Boston the doubles were thought to have nearly eradicated the single variety. Unfortunately the double form is reportedly extinct. By any chance does anyone have the double form? Here is a pic.
